Post:
By absorbing half of the carbon dioxide emitted into the atmosphere, the oceans have a profound influence on climate. However, their ability to take up this carbon dioxide might be impaired as a result of climate change. To determine their response to global warming, ESA has backed two projects that provide systematic data on key oceanic variables – colour and temperature.

2) Message boards : climateprediction.net Science : NASA RESEARCH REVEALS CLIMATE WARMING REDUCES OCEAN FOOD SUPPLY (Message 25498)
Posted 6 Dec 2006 by Profile old_user849
Post:
WASHINGTON - In a NASA study, scientists have concluded that when
Earth\'s climate warms, there is a reduction in the ocean\'s primary
food supply. This poses a potential threat to fisheries and
ecosystems.

By comparing nearly a decade of global ocean satellite data with
several records of Earth\'s changing climate, scientists found that
whenever climate temperatures warmed, marine plant life in the form
of microscopic phytoplankton declined. Whenever climate temperatures
cooled, marine plant life became more vigorous or productive. The
findings will appear in the journal Nature on Dec. 7.

The results provide a preview of what could happen to ocean biology in
the future if Earth\'s climate warms as the result of increasing
levels of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.

\"The evidence is pretty clear that the Earth\'s climate is changing
dramatically, and in this NASA research we see a specific consequence
of that change,\" said oceanographer and study co-author Gene Carl
Feldman of NASA\'s Goddard Space Flight Center, Greenbelt. Md. \"It is
only by understanding how climate and life on Earth are linked that
we can realistically hope to predict how the Earth will be able to
support life in the future.\"

Phytoplankton are microscopic plants living in the upper sunlit layer
of the ocean. They are responsible for approximately the same amount
of photosynthesis each year as all land plants combined. Changes in
phytoplankton growth and photosynthesis influence fishery yields,
marine bird populations and the amount of carbon dioxide the oceans
remove from the atmosphere.

\"Rising levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere play a big part in
global warming,\" said lead author Michael Behrenfeld of Oregon State
University, Corvallis. \"This study shows that as the climate warms,
phytoplankton growth rates go down and along with them the amount of
carbon dioxide these ocean plants consume. That allows carbon dioxide
to accumulate more rapidly in the atmosphere, which would produce
more warming.\"

The findings are from a NASA-funded analysis of data from the
Sea-viewing Wide Field-of-view Sensor (SeaWiFS) instrument on the
OrbView-2 spacecraft, launched in 1997. SeaWiFS is jointly operated
by GeoEYE, Dulles, Va. and NASA.

The uninterrupted nine-year record shows in great detail the ups and
downs of marine biological activity or productivity from month to
month and year to year. Captured at the start of this data record was
a major, rapid rebound in ocean biological activity after a major El
Nino event. El Nino and La Nina are major warming or cooling events,
respectively, that occur approximately every 3-7 years in the eastern
Pacific Ocean and are known to change weather patterns around the
world.

Scientists made their discovery by comparing the SeaWiFS record of the
rise and fall of global ocean plant life to different measures of
recent global climate change. The climate records included several
factors that directly effect ocean conditions, such as changes in sea
surface temperature and surface winds. The results support computer
model predictions of what could happen to the world\'s oceans as the
result of prolonged future climate warming.

\"When we compared changes in phytoplankton activity with simultaneous
changes in climate conditions, the agreement between the two records
was simply astonishing,\" Behrenfeld said.

Ocean plant growth increased from 1997 to 1999 as the climate cooled
during one of the strongest El Ni?o to La Ni?a transitions on record.
Since 1999, the climate has been in a period of warming that has seen
the health of ocean plants diminish.

The new study also explains why a change in climate produces this
effect on ocean plant life. When the climate warms, the temperature
of the upper ocean also increases, making it \"lighter\" than the
denser cold water beneath it. This results in a layering or
\"stratification\" of ocean waters that creates an effective barrier
between the surface layer and the nutrients below, cutting off
phytoplankton\'s food supply. The scientists confirmed this effect by
comparing records of ocean surface water density with the SeaWiFS
biological data.

Post:
Hi,

The problem for CPDN on Mac is not that they don\'t have the kit, although it was for a while, in that they only had a Mac Laptop. I sold them a G4 late last year, at a knockdown price I might add.

The problem lies with compiling the programme. It uses old Fortran, some of it 30 years old, from the Met office data base. The compiler that they needed to use was to expensive to buy, with no guarantee that it would work any better than the one they had.

In addition, they only have two people, looking after the project, Carl and Tolu. They were also developing the side projects for the BBC as well as looking after the normal stuff and I think trying to sort out the problems on the Mac version was probably taking up to much of their time.

So I think what they need is:-

1/ a top of the range MacPro 3. It will have to handle very large ammounts of data and not take forever to compile and re-compile as required. Say £5,000

2/ The latest compilers for IntelMacs plus other software needed. say £2,500

3/Funds to employ a Mac specalist for one year. Say £30.000

4/ Plus additional admin costs. Say £2.500

That\'s £40,000 total. I think that should do it. Of course funding to employ someone for an addtional year may be required later. But we don\'t have to worry about that yet.

Maybe the National Lottery Fund would help?

I did try to contact Apple about supporting the project, but nothing of course.

1. please download and install the prerequisite application library first.

http://climateapps2.oucs.ox.ac.uk/cpdnboinc/download/libcpdn.zip

2. Make sure you are running the latest version of BOINC.

http://climateapps2.oucs.ox.ac.uk/cpdnboinc/download.php

Firewall and port settings:-
Rom walton says Boinc needs the following:?BOINC Manager needs to be able to open outbound connections to either 1043 or 31416.?BOINC Screensaver needs to be able to open outbound connections to either 1043 or 31416.?BOINC needs to open an inbound connection to either 1043 or 31416, and an outbound connection to port 80 for downloads and uploads of workunits, results, and science packages.?Plus, BOINC may also need port 43. CPDN Trickle\'s may need https on port 443.

There is a lot of help and support. Here is a good place to start:- http://boinc.berkeley.edu/participate.php and which gives mac instructions as required.

Be aware that developement of BOINC and BOINC projects and their servers, is ongoing; so problems may occur. If they do happen to you, take the time to look around the project boards, read the Wiki pages and BOINC Help menu.

On my Mac G5 Quad running four (4) CPDN work units I am currently using 5.22 GB of Disk, so they can use a lot of disk space.

If you are running multiple CPDN wu\'s make sure that you have a long time gap between wu\'s. I am using around 36 hours. I say this as I have had problems uploading more than one wu at the same time. WU\'s take a long time to run, 1400 to 1500 CPU hours is not uncommon.

Make sure that your \'permissions\' are in good repair. Run the disk utility from the drop down menu on the OS install disk. (Take care).

In the Work tab, if you highlight a wu that has been running a little while and then hit the \'show graphic\' button, the graphics should display ok for that wu only.

@ Macjack

\"Does any one have an idea on how I could fix this ?\"

The only fix for this at the moment, so far as I can see, is to forget that wu and move on to the next one.

The wastage rate of wu\'s on macs is still high i think. Carl has said \"actually for us \"Over\" probably means that we only need one of these results;\" So it may be that you have got a stopped duplicate wu.

You can check that your permissions are correct (Don\'t forget that you have to do this from your install cd useing the disk utility in the drop down menu, for it to be 100% effective.)

If you are useing a router or firewall make sure you have the correct ports set up. Rom walton says Boinc needs the following:
BOINC Manager needs to be able to open outbound connections to either 1043 or 31416.
BOINC Screensaver needs to be able to open outbound connections to either 1043 or 31416.
BOINC needs to open an inbound connection to either 1043 or 31416, and an outbound connection to port 80 for downloads and uploads of workunits, results, and science packages.
BOINC may also need port 43. CPDN Trickle\'s may need https on port 443.

Be aware that you may get upload problems after phase one, the server staus will show that the wu is over, but it will continue to crunch on your machine.

Now that CPDN have a dual G5 with Tiger we can hope to see a resolution of mac problems in the new year, so stay with it.

@ Les Bayliss

Les,

Mac OS x is in two flavours Panther which is 10.3.xx and Tiger which is 10.4.xx. They show up on BOINC projects as Darwin X.X.X and as \'Powermac or book . xx as the machine and cpu\'s

btw I like your posts on the mac q & a - good effort. By your interest I think you will be getting a mac in 2006. Happy new year.

I am not sure if I am able to let this machine and the program run for the coming months without at least sometimes stopping BOINC or even the machine, e.g. due to hardware modification.

Hi,
I would think that this depends on how far along you are in the cycle. If you have just started (and therefore have the new version 4.22) or have a few days work only, then I suggest that you exit BOINC and restart your machine then restart BOINC under CPDN and see what happens. Tolu is saying that the crash bug is fixed. If BOINC crashes, and you do not have the latest version of BOINC and sulphur cycle, then its an opertunity to update! No doubt any work units you loose will be recycled eventualy.

Now that CPDN has a Dual G5 we can hope to see some improvements to the Mac versions of CPDN.

What I did was to adjust my preference settings. I set to hold in memory, increased available memory, reset connection to server to 2 days from .1 days. I also reinstalled the libcpdn package.

The log shows that it all downloaded and started ok, (it was crashing.)

It\'s a long wu - 2956 hours - and uses a large amount of disk space - 333.25mb as against sah 3.83mb.

Lets see how it goes.
