I was intrigued as to what was the rational behind the HadSM3 model and how it works, so I’m not so sure that any of these are exactly what you require, but here goes:

I’m still wondering about the computation side of things, maybe you’ll have better luck than I!

22) Questions and Answers : Preferences : Deferring Communication (Message 403)

Post:
Hi GwydionT,

I use Broadband in exactly the same way; so it’s easier to monitor the kids’ usage!

CPDN trickles statistics every 10,802 timesteps, although a complete phase is 259,248 timesteps, and of course there are 3 phases for each model. Even with your IP/ISP link disabled, when it becomes available this trickle information should find its way home to the CPDN central servers. So from the BOINC message log AFAIK the following messages indicate such communication:

climateprediction.net - YYYY-MM-DD HH:MM:SS - Sending request to scheduler: http://climateapps2.oucs.ox.ac.uk/cpdnboinc_cgi/cgi
climateprediction.net - YYYY-MM-DD HH:MM:SS - Scheduler RPC to http://climateapps2.oucs.ox.ac.uk/cpdnboinc_cgi/cgi succeeded

To display trickle information follow the following trail from the http://climateapps2.oucs.ox.ac.uk/cpdnboinc/home.php web page:

Your Account -> Results -> Result ID (Work Unit#) -> Trickle # (At bottom of page)

This is the trickle information for one of my two Work Units allocated to the same machine:

Trickle Information for Result # 193
Time Sent (UTC) Phase Timestep CPU Time (sec) Average
08 Aug 2004 05:53:13 1 32406 99390 3.0670246250694
07 Aug 2004 09:05:12 1 21604 66288 3.0683206813553
06 Aug 2004 12:26:30 1 10802 33236 3.0768376226625

I don’t do anything with disabling BOINC network access when I connect or disconnect my ISP/IP connection. AFAIK, when my ISP/IP connection becomes active, the trickle information is registered.

Hmmm, hopefully it’s not possible to create a duplicate account with the same user name as a key. Did you receive a web page confirmation of your account ID or an Email to the Email address you registered your user with the following details?

climateprediction.net URL: http://climateprediction.net

Your account ID:

Where your account is a unique alphanumeric string.

Maybe your account is not activated yet and can be via the http://climateapps2.oucs.ox.ac.uk/cpdnboinc/account_created.php link, presuming you know your account ID.

Hi poolball,

You could also right-click on the BOINC program shortcut (Wherever you use it, maybe Startup folder, et al), select the Shortcut toggle and then select Minimized from the Run pull down menu, which usually has Normal Window as a default.

The File and version info for the executables (boinc_cli.exe, boinc_gui.exe, boinc.dll and boinc.scr) is and 4.03 (4.3.0.0), although the CPDN model identifier is seemingly 4.02 (I.E. hadsm3_4.02_windows_intelx86). Maybe the website is slightly misleading or maybe I don’t understand the naming conventions?
26) Questions and Answers : Windows : 2 WUs downloaded, but there is no sign of one of them (Message 166)

Hi Pete,

I also went for two WU’s to test out the multi WU functionality. Mine are both downloaded and working OK, with two projects under climateprediction.net and slots 0 and 1. Weird, that for the same type of scenario we have two different results!

I apologize in advance for this dumb question, but do you have two WU’s in the Project display, each with a climateprediction.net tag and a nn.nn% Resource share; Then from a Work viewpoint, each hadsm3 4.02 application an Name (Unique model); Then from the Disk view two lots of climateprediction.net disk space usage @ ~55/56 MB?

Do you have the following message for each WU?

climateprediction.net - YYYY-MM-DD HH:MM:SS - Starting computation for result 00nn_0000nnnnn_0 using hadsm3 version 4.02

Maybe you need to Update or Reset Project the offending WU from the Projects dialog?
27) Questions and Answers : Windows : Positive CPDN BOINC Experiences - Windows x86 (Message 150)
Posted 6 Aug 2004 by Profile old_user83
Post:
I thought it might be a good idea to document the positive and successful aspects of my BOINC CPDN experience thus far, while of course bugs or other issues are documented elsewhere. For me personally, then I only run CPDN from a DC viewpoint, so I have halted my current V 3.0.1 model, but decided to download 2 CPDN BOINC Beta projects, thus experiencing shared workloads, but in my case, for the same project, CPDN.

Maybe some of these experiences can be incorporated into a BOINC CPDN FAQ? It would be great if we could report positive experiences for future CPDN BOINC users.

*** Installation and Settings ***
Very straightforward, up and running within ~5 minutes including download and install of BOINC CPDN 4.0.2 software and download of two CPDN projects. Carl has confirmed that an InstallShield type installation will be deployed for Public Release, so this will address the addition of Program Icons, etc. I just added a BOINC Program Group and ICON, and then copied the BOINC Program ICON to the Startup folder. I found that the 80/20 rule applied to the BOINC Preferences, and I had nothing or little to do from this viewpoint. Overall I found the Installation and Settings activities very easy with minimal impact.

**** Performance ****
After 16 hours running I find that I have processed ~30% more timesteps than I usually do via CPDN Classic. The BOINC Messages fields CPU time and to completion seem fairly accurate, although I haven’t worked out the tolerances yet. From a HDD I/O viewpoint, I only ever created a separate Logical Drive for pagefile.sys under CPDN Classic and this remains as of CPDN BOINC, so no RAM Disk usage. I have found that from my HDD SMART diagnostics that the HDD operating temperature has reduced by ~10%+, even though yesterday was one of the hottest days and nights on my records, but was the lowest temperature my HDD has operated at since running CPDN. I never really used FileMon for CPDN classic so can’t really comment on any file level activity differences. For me these performance characteristics are very welcome and indeed encouraging.

**** BOINC Operations ****
CPU benchmarks were processed AOK at first BOINC invocation and my 2 projects were allocated with no problems. The project options (Update, Attach, Web Site, et al.) have all operated AOK. My time-sharing options of 50/50 for each project has worked AOK, and processing (I.E. Preempting -> Resuming) is switched every hour for each project accordingly. I haven’t trickled yet as my machine is not the most powerful, and I’m time-sharing between two projects.

Something different. Has anybody else noticed that CPU time is almost halted when interacting (I.E. changing/toggling the display) with the Show Graphics function.
29) Questions and Answers : Windows : Benchmarks (Message 57)

I only played with BOINC 3.nn and SETI to familiarise myself ready for CPDN. I uninstalled BOINC 3.nn and then installed 4.02 and the automated benchmark ran OK and automatically for me, as per 3.nn, for example:

2004-08-05 17:19:25 - Running CPU benchmarks
2004-08-05 17:19:26 - Suspending computation and network activity - running CPU benchmarks
http://climateprediction.net/ - 2004-08-05 17:19:53 - Project prefs: using your defaults
2004-08-05 17:20:27 - Benchmark results:
2004-08-05 17:20:27 - Number of CPUs: 1
2004-08-05 17:20:27 - 1629 double precision MIPS (Whetstone) per CPU
2004-08-05 17:20:27 - 3517 integer MIPS (Dhrystone) per CPU

Maybe the problem is limited to upgrades as opposed to new installs?
30) Questions and Answers : Getting started : Running New and Old models together (Message 49)

Yep, same performance improvement for me, although I’ve halted my V 3.0.1 model for the time being. My 2.6GHz Celeron Laptop has increased from ~15 TS/Min to ~20 TS/Min under BOINC. Maybe the FORTRAN compiler is providing some performance improvement, as per http://www.climateprediction.net/board/viewtopic.php?t=1237. I thought I recalled carl saying something like a~25% performance improvement, but I can’t seem to find this commentary.
