Hi,
I did see somewhere that the projects will be getting broken down soon. The 160 year models will change to 80 year ones and then 40 and possibly 20 year models over the next few months. I can\'t remember who I saw this from.
Neil.

I am participating in the BBC Climate change experiment, running BOINC Manager 5.4.9.
The estimated time it will take to do one set of calculations on my fastest machine is nearly 3 months, and about 5 on my slowest machine.

Wise up and break the calculations down into realistic sizes, so that more people will actually finish the calculations.

3 to 4 months is a ridiculous time to spend on a single calculation.GL

Hi all,

Just an update really. I have finally taken the plunge, and this week, I upgraded my system. I kept my case, PSU, hard-drives, DVD and fans and simply purchased a new CPU, mobo, RAM and Graphics Card.
(The system is a dual-core Intel 950D on and Asus P5W-DH mobo, with 2Gb OCZ Platinum XTC PC6400 DDR2 RAM and an Asus EN6600 512Mb Silent Gfx card)
All is going well, and with CPDN, I am running at 1.9s/TS on each core. I also do SETI and Rosetta. SETI is certainly a huge improvement with one WU done in about 4 hours on each core.

On installing XP, I ended up having to telephone Microsoft and they gave me a new Validation Key, so no problems there.

Thanks for all your advice,

Neil.

Hi all,

Just to let you know that I have successfuly upgraded my PC to a new 950D dual-core for some more BOINC crunching power.
XP did need to be re-installed, but it all seems fine right now and I am happily BOINCing away!!

Thanks for all of your advice and help.

Hi all,

I\'ve just upgraded my PC to an Intel 950D dual-core (2 x 3.4GHz with 2Mb L2 cache on each core).
I am confused by my CPU benchmarks though. Specifically for the CPU, if I run SiSoft Sandra, I get benchmarks that are comparable to other, similar CPUs with a Dhrystone score of around 15200 MIPS.

However, in BOIN, if I run the CPU Benchmark facility there, it only shows around 1600 MIPS.

How can that be, that they are out by a factor of ten?

Regards,

Neil.

Then tick the box underneath.
Click update.
Job done!

Hi John,

Many thanks. Like I said, I was sure it was going to be an easy solution!! Seems to have done the trick.

Cheers,

Hey,

Numb question!!! Easy solution I guess!!
How do I get to show my BOINC Stats in my signature? As you can see, all you have here is a www link....clearly not the way to do it!!
Lots of people have nice little graphics which depict their BOINC progress. How do you do this??

Hi,

The last Credit I received was 13th June, from looking at the graph/Statistics page in my BOINC Manager. I have now suspended CPDN until further notice to try to help alleviate the situation. Maybe if everyone could suspend it for 24 or 48 hours, that would be a massive help to the project, so that the server can cope with the backlog.
One step backwards....two steps forwards!!

Hi Ray,

I bought my PC as a \"Music\" PC - to be used for composing music with software such as Cubase SX and various \"software synths\" and effects. These beasts in themselves consume CPUs for breakfast as well as RAM, so a good PC is important for me. I\'ve had mine which was pretty good when I bought it, but now is showing its age.

Anyway, I contacted the shop I got the PC from, and my copy of XP I have is fine for an upgrade. It is OEM, but I do have a Windows disc and they confirmed it is not linked to the BIOS. However, I will need to do a full format & install again. So all seems OK for a new mobo/CPU/RAM combo.

I have taken on-board your other comments, but my current mobo only supports a 533FSB so an HT/478 P4 is not available. I want to keep my current case/PSU/fans/HDs/sound-card/DVD.... and just buy the bare minimum. I am now looking at the forthcoming Conroe (Core2 Duo) CPUs, but for the time being, I may get a 930D system, which can be bought for peanuts!!! AMD dual-cores are great, but I feel that they will soon hit a brick wall in terms of technology, but I do see that they have a dual CPU system for dual-core mobos (4x4) coming out next year, by which time, Intel may have some quick Core2 Duo\'s and maybe even a quad-core CPU themselves.....

Here\'s to the future........

Neil.

Hi

My LTD = 2288

I have had two CPDN models crash on me, each after about 120 hours or so. I am now working on my third, but have been backing up my projects folder just in case it happens again.

I would like to move to a dual-core machine soon, but a few people have warn ed me off, becuase I would just like to swap the mobo/CPU/RAM combination and not my HDs, case and PSU. Some people say I can\'t do this, others say I can. Some say BOINC will be fine, others say it won\'t..... :(
A bit lost!

Thanks for your info.

Hi,
I am a very active participant with BOINC and am running CPDN, SETI & Rosetta. However, CPDN seems to completely hog the resources of my PC as it is such a huge model. I would like to help the Rosetta cause and ideally would like my PC (which is switched on 24 hours a day) to spend about 8 hours a day on each of the three projects.

As I write this, I haven\'t done a Rosetta WU for over a wekk, and I can\'t seem to force the PC to download any WUs (or SETI\'s for that matter) whatever \"Resource Share %\" I set in my preferences.

Why is this? How can I get my PC to run more evenly with my three Projects so that I contribute to each?

Thanks,

Neil.

MAD???? Don\'t know about that - probably just mis-informed would be better. I have raised the topic on several Forums, and you are the first to tell me to re-install Windows. Why do I need to re-install it exactly? I have a good registry cleaner and it is fine at the moment.
If I just sick in a new mobo and re-authorise XP, surely that\'ll be fine? Why the re-installation of XP - please inform me.

Neil.

your not going to re-install XP after a motherboard change, you are mad......mad I tell you

I have done this when going from the DFI NF4 SLI-DR to teh eXpert but these are the SAME chipset and I still debated it

I would DEFINITELY re-install XP when performing a major motherboard change

the only conceivable way to avoid this would be to uninstall all your drivers, then use something like \"drive cleaner pro\" to rid yourself of the \"junk\" left behind and try it

I suspect you will have issues as the registry will be bloated full of crap

If you want 2Gb of ram go for 2X1Gb sticks

4X512Mb is hard to get running right on the AMD64 platform as Mike said

\"Conroe\" does look like a step-up in performance - no question. Whether it\'ll beat the FX-60 remains to be seen, but the current benchmarks I have seen look promising. However, AMD aren\'t doing to stand still, and I am sure that the next generation of FX-62/64 CPUs running on the AM2 socket mobos which allow DDR2 RAM to be used for the first time will sing with the AMD chip. I\'m an Intel fan!!!!....but probably moving to AMD for a while!

Yes, 2*1.9n throughput. And, yes, they are amazing machines.
Astro is good but..... 1.47 and 1.49 for my 2 models on a dual core AMD overclocked to 2.85GHZ and yes it is stable as I finished two coupled spin-ups on this machine

can\'t wait for Conroe, the first Intel offering I have been exited about in years, its going to eat the A64 alive and I am an AMD fanboy
AstroWX,
Many thanks for this input. Just for clarity - is that 1.9s/TS for each core? So you could say your PC is running at 0.95s/TS overall. If it is, than that is amazing. :-O

Neil.

And with your 4400+ PC\'s what sort of secs/TS are you getting per core?

On one box, two Models @ 1.92 s/TS; on the other, 1.90 and 1.93 s/TS.

Much of the difference has to do with parameter mix. Before the global restart, the first machine had two at 1.91 and the other had two at 1.92.

The machines are similar except for memory. The first has Kingston HyperX 2-3-2-6 1T running to spec. The other has Corsair XMS 2-3-3-6 1T running at 2.5-3-3-6 1T, best I could get without manually resetting voltages (which is more than I care to do). No CPU O/C.

(Oh, different brand but otherwise similar low-end video cards.)

Built a similar box for a friend but with Kingston HyperX 2-2-2-5 1T running to spec. If memory serves, her times were both at 1.90, but I won\'t swear to it. (One Model might have been @ 1.89.) I\'ve been given to understand that A64 X2s, perhaps all A64s, like fast memory.

HTH.

A bit OT but, what the heck, it relates to calculation times...

Had five P4 HT boxes, from 2.8 to 3.4; three remain. I was an Intel-bigot for hadware because I thought they crunched floating-point better/faster than AMD. It was probably true once upon a time. Now? AMD might have a slight edge. Also, I think the AMDs use less power, hence a bit quieter, than Intel boxes of equivalent power. So, I now also have three A64 X2 4400+ boxes designed to crunch CPDN (good MoBo, low-end Graphics card, good low-latence memory), have Win32 XP on one, Win64 XP on the other two -- and SuSE 10.0 64-bit across the board. (I\'m very pleased with the X2s; two currently running TCM in XP and one running Seasonal in Linux.)

Lots of info on the net. Here is a good place to start: http://www.tomshardware.com/
(Don\'t let the \"busy\" home page turn you off; there\'s a lot of good stuff buried in there.)

Les,

Sounds a little \"scary\"!!!
I\'ll follow your advice about suspending the projects. Luckily, I only run CPDN & SETI.
I guess the worst that can happen, is that I end up with a new Computer ID and my stats go a bit screwy? Surely, it is the same as someone adding a new PC to their BOINC network. My user name will be the same, and my account-key will remain.
Surely, the projects will still run, once I have selected \"Run always\" as you suggested?

Is there anyone else out there who has upgradedmobo/CPU/RAM whilst running BOINC Projects?

If I went for an Intel dual-core system, would that be OK for BOINC or will it see the change as the same as going to an AMD CPU?

Neil.

Hmmmm. Might be some hassles going from Intel to AMD.
BOINC looks at things like that, and this info gets stored on the servers, as well as in some of the files on your PC. client_state.xml at least.

It would be best if you made a backup of the entire BOINC folder, even if somewhere on the same hard disk.
BOINC may decide to allocate a new computer ID, as the original one is associated with the Intel processor.
But you\'ll have a backup if it ends up in a mess, and you can yell for help.

I think that I\'d use both \"Suspend\", and \"Network activity suspended\", (both in the menu), before making the change over. Then select \"Run always\", with the network still off, and see what messages I got, with special attention to the computer ID, and anything else near the start.

How do you back-up successfully?
My CPDN model has just crashed.

[Second time. First one got up to 168 hours. This has just crashed after 125 hours.....huh?!?
I might give up - waste of electricity if the program is so unstable that it looses all data when it crashes.]

Re-booted PC and it has gone from the BOINC Manager.

Do you just copy the ClimatePrediction.net folder from the D:\\Programs\\Boinc\\projects\\climateprediction.net directory?

simple as that?

Neil.

Yes, backups are a great idea. At one point last month I was making a backup every 12 hours, until I got past whatever the problem was. For a while, I didn\'t know if my middle name was \"Backup\", or \"Paranoid\".

The only problem with an automated backup, is that BOINC MUST be exited before the backup, or else the files will get out of sync. And there\'s at least one \'lockfile\'.

Hi

One other question. I like to have the 3D Globe in view. I notice that as I make it smaller, it rotates more smoothly. If it is put to \"max screen size\", then I get a refreshed globe position only every second or so.
If I reduce the globe so that it measures about 30mm diameter on my screen (1280 resolution), it almost rotates smoothly.

Why is this? Where\'s the hog? CPU or graphics card?
Does running the graphics slow down the crunching time of the model?

In the preferences section, you can set a gfx cpu fraction. What does this mean. Should it be high or low? What numbers do I put in? Is it %? So when set to 20%, does that mean that the gfx card will use 20% of the CPU power? I\'m a bit confused here!!!!

Meaning what exactly??
I have a reasonable PC but with a slow graphics card. Do I set the number low, meaning the CPU will be doing the work, or do I set a high number here? I still don\'t follow what it means exactly.
With a fast gfx card such as an nVidia 6600 or better, does it matter?

Neil.

This limits how much of the CPU will be diverted to the graphics thread when it is running.
