1) Message boards : Number crunching : Credit Status (Message 57235)

A moment of perspective, if you please.

...

Forget 'credits', revel in our long history of cumulative accomplished science; revel in what YOU do to help protect the planet -- i.e., the important stuff. There is a lot!
Well, maybe you should broaden your view a little bit.

For me, it is not as much the credit by itself (yes, it is worthless) but to me, it is an indicator of a successful running application.
If there is a steady flow of those credits (that used to be the case with CPDN's "trickle credits"), then for me that indicates
a) the application is properly running on my host(s), for which I pay the resources to operate
b) that the project is acknowledging those resources that I put into it.

My first check would alsays be on my local hosts, as I do not have the time and/or intention to babysit them. When a regular increase of credits is missing, it could be that this host is down or needs otherwise attention.

If a project has problems providing that credit/stats function, it might be an indicator that not all is right with this project. Some projects just don't seem to care...

Well, while I got the credits back that disappeared due to the server meltdown, it seems that since that magic point in time, none of the trickle-up messages have been processed and added to the credit total since. And as it takes supposedly +86h of runtime until the first of the currently 4 WUs running is completely finished, it's uncertain if anything will be added at this point. One can only hope...

Well, s**t can always happen, but then the people running distributed projects need to respect those people that are donating their CPU time with all associated expenditure.
And this seems to be a bit lacking here. On one side, the scripts that create the XML files for the stats sites (BOINCStats, FreeDC, etc) are sometimes not running at all or as in this incident, are in fact running and updating with the huge loss of credits all the sudden, when it would have been better to stop those in this case.
To make it clear, I care less about the actual credits (it's from this project less than 2% of what I have crunched overall in the last few years) but I use the stats update twice a day as a general indicator of the "health" of the crunching systems. Now I got kind of used to the stats not updating for a while, but when I all the sudden saw the negative 100k, this set off the alarm bells, as I could not be sure if there was something seriously wrong with the system that is crunching this project, which just recently had been upgraded to Windows 10.
Luckily, it was "just" a fuoobar with the project server, which hopefully will be resolved soon, but never the less, it caused me to scramble to see what was wrong. I am busy enough as it is, I could have seriously have done without that scare...

Getting back on topic:
BOINCstats picked up the new credit figures from our site about 12 hours ago.

Well, just came in here to check if everything's OK with the project, got 7 updates the last 8 days.... ;-)

There has been two credits problems.
The second one hasn't been fixed yet.
No stats have been exported yet to external sites, so all of those are out of date.

Hopefully it will get fixed next week.

Thanks for the info, bon courage !!
Well, never a dull moment... :-(

We've been through these priority hassles before and it always sorted out eventually. It will surely do so in this case -- though obviously not on a time scale to suit everyone.

Hang in there...
I added CPDN to the mix of projects I have CPUs working on as I thought it would be a worthy task. Credits by them self is not that much my concern but any major deviation from the average credits per day usually indicates that there is a problem with a certain project. And when a project like CPDN isn't taking care of a simple task like keeping the stats for external stats sites up to date, I start to wonder how well managed the project overall is and if any of the time and resources invested are worth the effort...

BOINCstats got two big updates, so it seems to be back on track, kind of...

The credits on the bottom of the CPDN account page though is still off, but I certainly can live with that.

As I mentioned before, it's, for me at least, not as much an issue of the credits itself but the fact that they at some point "just fall of the wagon". And that commonly indicates something is amiss with the project.

free-dc gave me quite a few credits yesterday, which must mean 17th March, but on BoincStats I/we are still waiting. This must be because of the different times of day that each stats site imports its updates from the projects.
Yeah, Free-DC has the updated numbers from yesterday, will see if BOINCstats is showing anything with the next update cycle...

The admins are aware of the problem, and are looking into it - but even when the systems are running smoothly, the end-to-end process of seeing processed stats on external sites can easily take 24 hours, sometimes more, if the multiple independent steps don't dovetail cleanly.
The problem seems to be that the CP.net site doesn't seem to create the XML files needed for the 3rd party sites to updates their stats.

There is more to this than just "stats chasing" that you seem to imply repeatedly, my main objective when checking the stats site (BOINCStats) for any significant deviation from the average "production numbers" usually indicates that something is amiss.
That can be either one (or multiple) of the many hosts that I have running or it can be the project that is having issues. To check out which of those it might be simply requires more (significant) effort than the usual"fire and forget".

As I posted here, a little way down this thread, the project is under going the long awaited upgrade.
This has also been talked about in several other threads over the last couple of months.

This project should be considered a construction site for a while. Look but stay out. :)

Sorry, but I did not see anything like this mentioned, I am not hanging out at the forum each and every day.
I let some computers do their crunching thing, which for the most part works just fine. it's only when something seems out of whack that I try to find out what's going on.

A note about "ongoing maintenance" would be nice to be added to the server status page, that's likely the first place people like me will be looking at...

Any news on this issue? It's almost Tuesday over there on the old coast, so I would assume (wrongly?) that someone had a day to look at the problem...

For me, the credits haven't been updated neither on this site nor on any of the stats sites (BOINCStats, FreeDC) since 1/13... :-

For me, the stats have been updating on this site, as well as on Boinc Manager, but since Jan 13, not on any external stats sites.

Seems like the script that is supposed to export the stats is not running.
At the time I made my post, neither one had been updated, the credits on this page (account page or here in the forum under the user name) were identical (and missing updates) to BOINCstats and FreeDC. When I checked today, the stats here seem to be updated (so somewhat too low at a first glance), but still no update externally....

Even though the credit updates work on this site, it has been several days since the credits have been updated on any external site.
