21) Questions and Answers : Windows : cannot place a new host in service (Message 51101)

I purchased a new PC and want to add it to my stable of machines running CP.net but when I try to add project from the BOINC manager on the new machine, I am prompted that I should try again later. I've been trying for a few days with the same result. When I try to go to the CP home page, I get page not found.

It's also important to remember that CPDN has reduced the number of times a computer can request extra work from the server to once per hour. We cannot change this setting which was decided to limit the load on the server. The countdown to the next hourly attempt is shown in the Projects tab of BOINC Manager. Do not try to ask for work now by clicking the Update button as this will reset the time to 60 minutes. Patience rules!

And of course to see what models are available go to the Server Status link in the blue menu to the left.

I always wondered why a request automatically resulted in a one-hour delay. Now I'm enlightened! : )

You can check the server status link on the left hand menu of this website and it should tell you if there are tasks in the queue to send.

Excellent. I checked and got the information requested. Thank you.

Is there a way to check the work queue to confirm the lack of work as a reason for no tasks being received?

If not, what would be a suggested period to wait before becoming concerned that there is an issue other than no work when new tasks are not forthcoming?

I've "fixed" the problem. I discovered that I had suspended two tasks (the project was not suspended). As soon as I resumed the tasks, the annoying pop-up never returned.

I've resolved to check my tasks more frequently. I had inadvertently left these two tasks suspended for so long that their deadlines passed. (slaps forehead)

It's an application problem, so uninstalling/reinstalling BOINC won't change anything.

Actually it does - it stops the problem - the only way I've found to do so, but at the cost of stopping my fastest machine from helping out with CP. :(

So I guess this is another live-with-it thing...alas.

Thanks for your response, Les.

I can suspend the project, but the window keeps right on popping up. The only way I can get it to stop is to uninstall BOINC. With re-install of BOINC the window starts popping up again.

Here's another curious thing - one of the four machines I run has an AMD uP. It doesn't have the problem. The three others, all running Intel uP's, have it.

Here is what the window tells me:

"this application has requested the runtime to terminate in an unusual way. Please contact the application's support team for further information"

I routinely get a window opening with C++ in the title bar that tells me the runtime was exited in an uncommon way and the BOINC folder is referenced. I posted a question about this at the BOINC forum and they told me it is a climateprediction problem. Climateprediction is the only project I run. This started happening about 2-3 weeks ago.

This error window is appearing on all my machines running BOINC/Climate Prediction (I run four) and it interrupts whatever else I may be doing, a real annoyance. The window closes shortly after it appears and my CP tasks appear to be proceeding without trouble.

Les:

I have had four machines running. As explained in another posting, I removed one of them from the project and when it turned out I would not be giving the machine away, I have been unable to reconnect to use it on the project as I did before. The problem still remains today after a few weeks of trying. "Error has occurred - check the event log for details".

I believe I have to copy an XML file?

Will the regular way of connecting be restored at some point? I can be infinitely patient, for months, years? I just need a ray of hope.

I have been running a laptop as a host. Expecting to send it to my daughter, I had it finish the tasks it was working on then I disconnected it from the project and removed BOINC.

Now daughter says no thanks, so I am trying to get up and running with it again. I installed BOINC and selected climateprediction.net but when I attempt to connect using BOINC manager (as a current user), after log-in it gives me "an error has occurred - see event log"

The event log shows "fetching configuration file from climateprediction.net" no evidence of any error.

I would like to get this host back on without it becoming a duplicate of the host it was. It appears in my host list as CPU T2400 @ 1.83gHz

Any suggestions on how to get past the "error"?

the tasks were indicating suspended by user but attempts to resume did not work. Rebooting, the oldest fix-it solution in the world, did! Now why didn't I think of that??? Thanks for your help.

Post:
For some reason the date on my PC was set one month into the future. I don't know when this happened, but it did not stop the climate modeling run.

When I set the date to be correct a few days ago, modeling stopped, understandably because suddenly it appeared my machine had gone back in time.

I assume that the task that was in progress must be terminated and I must request a new task, unless anyone knows of a way to take up where I left off when the date was reset.
35) Questions and Answers : Windows : error while computing frequent (Message 44078)

Sorry for the delay in responding, Les.

I got into the Stderr files for tasks that failed and compared them to the Stdrr files for tasks that completed without problem.

There seems to be no particular error that is common to the failed tasks.

When I click on a particular task ID, I get what appears to be a list of computers that were assigned that task. If the task fails on one computer it will be assigned to another. On some of the tasks where my computer failed, there are failures on other machines as well until finally the task completes.

I assume this means my failure notices are not all that unusual and I should not be concerned about them.

Looking over the history of tasks that have run on both of my machines, I see many "error while computing" entries. Can I discover the nature of the error so that I might take remedial action, or is this just an unavoidable characteristic of running large projects on my machines?

I run two computers. I would like to set the computing prefs independently but when I go to computing prefs I don't see any way to do this. I see that one can set up "home" and "work" prefs but there doesn't seem to be a way to specify a computer when setting prefs.

Thanks for the info, Les. I let the 12 hours pass and things are running as they should now. I went to my account page and discovered that my other machine had not had contact since November! I've re-booted that machine and hope that will get it talking to the project again. I've found it's never a good idea to leave any Windows machine running unattended for long.
