1) Message boards : Number crunching : wah2 tasks stuck (Message 63772)

Good idea on task manager. I went into Boinc manager and forced operation, over-riding the preferences. That worked and the tasks are running, so there must be something in my preferences that is inhibiting operation. I guess it would be best to reset and then re-introduce my preferences one by one.

Les, ok then I will kill them. Would there be something that keeps them from running that has nothing to do with my local settings...in other words, is the project telling my tasks not to run?

Also, where could I look to get that information you found?

I have six wah2 tasks on my machine that are not progressing over several days. I've checked my preferences and can find nothing wrong that would suspend them. The project is not suspended and I did force an update with no change.

Thanks, I'll investigate...wow, just briefly looking over the number crunching section I realize I should have been reading it all along as a gold mine of information is there. So, I return with this edit simply to say a second thank you for the reference.

Snooping around I see that the top 41 computers are all running Linux with Win10 at #42 and the applications page shows Weather at Home as the only one running Windows. I have WaH tasks on my machine at the moment.

I believe that a single SSD can have both Windows and Linux in different partitions, no? In that way, one could do work during the day on Windows and then overnight have Linux running CPDN?

I don't understand your reluctance to tell the future. Elon Musk does it daily! : )

ok, that's certainly not anything that I would have guessed. I did not know that CPDN was Windows only. Is there a similar site for Linux machines or plans to put CPDN on Linux? From what I just read about BOINC, it can handle a wide variety of OS's.

What are your thoughts about the future here?

As mentioned, I've just returned to monitoring activity. I went to my birthday page which formerly had a couple dozen people on it and find I am now the only one there. I know that a majority of participants stay for only a while and then depart but from what I see on my team (4 left out of around 100 if I recall correctly) it doesn't look good.

I know some of you run under several efforts other than CPDN, so might be able to say if this is a general trend. Is it possible the smartphone popularity has reduced the number of desktop users who would be drawn to distributed computing?

I have five PC's listed as participating in CPN. 3 of them I no longer have so I would like to delete them and have only my two active machines shown. I cannot find a way to do this.

I'm now at the point where I appear on the team and to CP but I don't appear on BOINCstats either as a user or on the team. I have approved use of my data for distribution, so possibly it takes a day or two for that to take effect?

Thank you Harri. I did as you suggested and I clicked on update in BOINC manager.

Curiously, I see that the team has changed from USA to International since I last looked at it. I would imagine someone new has taken charge and perhaps made that change.

It has been a very long time since I checked my stats. I have been on a team called Atheists/Agnostics since I started with climatePrediction 10 years ago. When I check my information, it shows that I am still on that team and I appear on the roster but when I click on the BOINCstats team stats, I'm nowhere to be found.

In addition, when I check the list of ClimatePrediction users, I cannot find my user name.

Thanks for the info.

Then from the listing of tasks, it is no longer possible to know what exact program one is running...i.e what sub-project of W@H2? It used to be the task name would allow me to know that I was running one for Africa, or the Atlantic or global, etc.

One other thing, though I had it disabled, there was a graphic that could be run that showed the area the tasks were operating on while the processing was going on. Do the W@H tasks have that feature?

Years ago, when I joined CP, the project was running climate models for a group associated with Oxford University. That went on for years and I have to admit I didn't pay any attention as I let my PC run every night without checking on what was going on.

Now I see there is something called Weather@home and checking the tasks with Boinc Account Manager the application is "weather@home 2" with nothing to indicate specifically what the project is doing. Looking at the CP site, there are many weather@home projects, but none for weather@home 2.

Can someone tell me what weather@home 2 is accomplishing in the tasks that my PC is running?

I've just passed the three million credit mark and would like to encourage Facebook friends to participate. Since citing credit would mean nothing to them, I wonder if there is a way to roughly translate credit into number of model years run, something that would give people an idea of what the credit amounts to in work done. Any suggestions?

I used the "when and how", so I will use the TOOLS tab on the manager as I see it has no time restriction. Thanks very much.

Some time ago, I was being frequently interrupted in my work by multiple windows opening telling me that there was a visual fortran error, termination in an unexpected way, etc., so I suspended processing while I was at the machine. This worked fine, but it occurred to me it would be simpler to set the hours of permitted operation so that processing would occur only when I was not using the machine.

I set my computing preferences to allow hours of operation only between 0200 and 1200 hours, on both the "default" and "school" profiles (used by my two machines) yet the setting is being ignored as the error windows are plaguing me once again. Does anyone have an idea why this might be? I am assuming that manual suspension of processing on a project and "do not allow work" mean the same thing. Perhaps they do not?

I am getting the aforementioned errors daily. As you mention, Ancient One, if nothing is done, the tasks continue to run and complete.

The trouble is the error messages are so frequent and I can't get rid of them - clicking on OK or trying to close the windows by hitting the X at upper right does nothing. The only way to take them off my screen is to use Task Manager to kill them individually, a real pain since there are usually four of them and they pop up after any additional run time has elapsed, or to abort the tasks.

The tasks are always, without exception, hadCM3_short 7.24, so I wonder if there is a way to filter so that I don't receive them.
