What I mean is the information on the website is wrong. OpenIFS does also run on Macs and a number of batches run on the testing sites have been for that platform. If they haven't changed the website when they get closer to running on the main site, I will remind them to change it.

Oh that's an interesting point ! now I understand better, thanks for the info.

I was more referring to your comment "When this will be released to the main site is still uncertain", obviously I do not have access to the test environment where it is possible to run OpenIFS for mac.

You then say "for Intel type processors, it should work" you actually mean "if a mac version of OpenIFS is deployed on CPDN public project, am I right ?

So my remark was : unless this OpenIFS app is open to the general public and provides some regular work, someone having a recent Intel mac (I'm not even talking about M1, my iMac is the last Intel generation December 2020) with macOS superior to 2018 macOS versions cannot run CPDN.

But this is only a factual remark, I understood the reasons now and I don't whine ;)

OK I understand better, thanks.

Therefore am I right to conclude that it is very unlikely to have any working CPDN tasks on a recent mac, now and in the future ?

You mention OpenIFS but it is linux only (on your applications page).
That needs to change. It may be that they get released for one platform before the other and or some batches will be for only one OS. I think that the testing ones have all been for Linux or Mac, certainly when some have appeared on testing site and I haven't been able to download any they have been all Mac batches.

If I understand you well OpenIFS is this only app where there may be a future for macOS version, but I'm not sure to understand what you are saying now, the only thing I can see is there is only one CPDN app released more than 2 years ago, linux only

@Les Bayliss & @Dave : thanks for the info. It seems quite odd to me that "mac only app" cannot be upgraded in any way and will be limited to machines that will be older and older - and less and less existent too. It's basically wanting the app to die, or do you mean you do the same calculation / better with some of the other apps (for other OS then) ?

You mention OpenIFS but it is linux only (on your applications page).

The only other app for mac you seem to have is "UK Met Office Coupled Model Full Resolution Ocean" from 2011, so I don't even think it's useful talking about it.

With a suggestion from Sebastien at l'AF I added <alt_platform>i686-apple-darwin</alt_platform> in my cc_config and got the project to give me tasks but they immediately fail

process exited with code 255 (0xff, -1)</message>
<stderr_txt>
Process creation (../../projects/climateprediction.net/hadcm3s_8.36_i686-apple-darwin) failed: Bad CPU type in executable (errno = -1)
</stderr_txt>

and what Richard wrote makes sense.

I assume this confirms some dev must be done to the app ? Hopefully they can !

Thanks a lot for all your investigations !

Wikipedia has a Darwin release history , 18.7 is not mentioned there but 18.0 is "mojave" (back in 2018) and I must confess it had been a very very long time that I had not participated to CPDN (much more years than 2018 I think) and I cannot remember on which machine / OS (even mac ?) I was then.

Hopefully your devs find a cure to this :)

I found this :

including this point : "Yes, it's possible to run 32-bit apps with a 64-bit kernel."

but maybe it's more complicated than it seems ?

Thanks for your quick answer.

The server had delayed next contact to one day.
I tried a manual update, I got the exact same message

Sam 5 fév 13:10:57 2022 | climateprediction.net | Message du serveur: Ce projet ne supporte pas les ordinateurs de ce type x86_64-apple-darwin

+ another day delay

Sam 5 fév 13:10:57 2022 | climateprediction.net | Project requested delay of 86400 seconds

I'm afraid it doesn't like my Mac :(

However, I discovered this

Meaning : "mac only" (??)

and also

Meaning : that's the only work available (!!)

So I tried my luck : no luck.

Sam 5 fév 11:30:08 2022 | climateprediction.net | Message du serveur: Ce projet ne supporte pas les ordinateurs de ce type x86_64-apple-darwin

How can that be ??

FYI I now how 2 tasks happily running and the limited resources of this small VM seem sufficient to handle them :

Thank you to both : I think I had to install the 32 bits libs so anyway your link is very useful @geophi, and @Dave regarding getting task I start to struggle with the beast : I have a non GUI command line only Debian hosted VM, I use boinctui easy small manager but not strong enough to change the log flags, I found the doc and could edit the cc_config, then I did fight to re-read the config because native boinccmd option would fail with a strange error message, so I had to find how to restart the boinc-client service, and then without doing anything else boinc suddenly decided to download a task when I force updated the project once again !!!

It has now been crunching for the past 10 mn without crashing so I think the lib installation is OK too, thanks a lot to both !

(I'm not using the linux VM in my Mac at the moment, I have a win10 VM using those threads instead for another win-only boinc project ;) )

Hi,

I'm trying to run CPDN on a linux Debian 10 host with 4 Gb RAM only, CPDN is not sending any work for days.

CPDN freshly added to the host that has been crunching many other projects for years.

I tried

sudo apt-get install lib32ncurses5 lib32z1 lib32stdc++-6-dev

but it claims none of these can be found

Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
E: Unable to locate package lib32ncurses5
E: Unable to locate package lib32stdc++-6-dev
E: Couldn't find any package by regex 'lib32stdc++-6-dev'

I see HadAM4 at N216 is supposed to be available and is linux only.

Note I had tried on a local linux VM on my iMac but no task sent neither.

Hello

I just saw a tweet "new model now available on CPDN" but I see no official announcement here, I see some discussions but no conclusion, only "you will see" kind of posts - or I missed it !

Anything effective ?

Thanks.

edit : or is it the "OpenIFS" I can see in the project selection params ?

And for the techies it's also possible to compile its own boinc client, or find some elsewhere

-->

https://boinc.berkeley.edu/wiki/Anonymous_platform
https://boinc.berkeley.edu/trac/wiki/DownloadOther

so the platform you saw could also be a dev testing a version, precisely.

Maybe it means something like "7.6.33 < 7.6 < 7.6.34" ?

Or "7.6.33 <> 7.6 = 7.6.34" ?

The only answer here is to avoid that model type for the moment.

Yep I know, that's what I did already...
