1) Message boards : Number crunching : Bad BOINC, bad model or bad server? (Message 34329)

Sometime BOINC Mananger \'stops\' updating the messages tab, even though the messages are being created by BOINC. It\'s a bug.

Live long and BOINC!

Thanks Les. This wu will be crunching 24/7 on 1 of 2 HT cpu\'s. It trickles about every 12.5hrs, so it sounds like it will be OK.

Another observation is that the cpu time on the results page (link below) is incorrect when compared to the trickle information page (see top result and the third result).

http://climateapps2.oucs.ox.ac.uk/cpdnboinc/results.php?hostid=214525

The 3rd result is also not going to make it by its deadline in 13 days (due to my earlier intervention and then a failed power supply which took 2 weeks to get a replacement under warranty). I want to continue it to it\'s end, is it worth it? It is currently at 65% complete and by its deadline it will be at approx 85% complete. By the time it completes it will be about 10 days passed the deadline. Will it still be useful for the project (Honza appears to say yes)? Will a new result be generated and sent out since this one is not completed in time?

Live long and crunch.

Paul.

Doh! Thanks Honaza, I should\'ve known.

So are there any implications for continued crunching of these wu\'s? I\'d hate to be crunching for another 1000hrs for nothing and I just don\'t mean the credits. I\'d rather be crunching for science needs and not just the credit (which pains me to say since I am a credit whore).

I have 2 wu\'s currently in progress but the result listing page (link below) shows that the results are Over. Since they are both in progress and not timed out and they are not completed is this a bug? What implicatons does it have (if any)?

http://climateapps2.oucs.ox.ac.uk/cpdnboinc/results.php?userid=633

Over The result has been sent to a host and either it has timed out or the host has reported its completion.

A trickle occurs at every 10802 time steps (from memory, it has been a while) at say 3.5 seconds per time step for your computer, so roughly at 10.5hrs! It all depends on how accurate the 3.5 seconds per time step is, you can see this by showing graphics and seeing what it is for your computer.

I resource share CPDN 52.5%, Pred 30.8% and SAH 16.7% on my computer. Will V4.14 make things go horribly wrong with any of those projects if I install it?

I hear that it screws cpdn. Does this mean that if I don't upgrade then I will not get Pred wu's?

Oh come on Zain. There's 168hrs in a week, now get to it! Stop sleeping, eating, and having a social life.

It's a great stats site. I look forward to it coming back online, no rush though. You have to keep sane!

Happy New Year!

LOL...this is great. :) MWhahahaha...MWhahahaha...MWhahahaha...

At this rate with my RAC (which is stuck at 429.93 and even though I return trickles multiple times a day) I will overtake Dogbytes (whose RAC has dropped over the past week or so from being stuck in the 1400's to 800 to 589.54, even though he has returned many trickles and added a dual G5). I always like to rub a bad dogs nose in it! SUFFER BUDDY. WOOHOO!

[EDIT - just after posting this my RAC recalculated down to 180.....bugger let's see how it goes over the next week or so - so much for rubbing a dog's nose in it! Thanks Carl :) ]

The RAC has been broken really since the bonus credit bug was 'fixed'. Since then I have added 5,000 credits (yes my total credit has increased) without a change in RAC.

A bit more info....mobo is 800MHz FSB, memory is 1GB PC3200 Corsair. The computer is sitting there crunching BOINC 24hrs a day with out much else going on except for dial-up for about an hour a day. Task manager shows the 2 wu's within 5 seconds of cpu time of each other with them typically at 50% each.

I understand that with HT on the wu's will be slower overall but should be faster with the 2 running at once...but the 2nd wu times appear to blow that concept out of the water.

I have a 3.2GHz P4 with HT running XP SP2 and BOINC V4.13.

Please check out this wu;
http://climateapps2.oucs.ox.ac.uk/cpdnboinc/trickle.php?resultid=359584

Note that the time per time step is slowly increasing.

Also with this wu;
http://climateapps2.oucs.ox.ac.uk/cpdnboinc/trickle.php?resultid=364734

Note that the time per time step is also increasing.

So why is the t/ts slowly increasing?

Also note that these two wu's are being run on the same machine with one on each HT cpu. So why is the t/ts so different?

Love to know why for all these questions.

18) Message boards : Number crunching : Installing new CPU (Message 5622)

Post:
> Hm, so you're saying a new Motherboard, new HDD and (in case of a new Linux
> Distribution and a fresh Installation) consequently a new Kernel Version
> wouldn't make CPDN discard its current work ?
>
> This Idea has been worrying me ever since.

Why should it? In my case I went from a 2GHz cpu with my system on W2K to a 3.2GHz cpu with my system on XPSP2. As I had the same HDD all I had to do was re-install BOINC and it picked up from where it left off as BOINC does not delete the existing directory, it just updates the relevant files where client_state.xml is not one of them. As I said....happy days.

Then my wife went and moved the case 6 inches while she was cleaning up and accidently hit the reset key, which caused major problems with BOINC. Lost all references to all projects, even the client_state_prev.xml file was stuffed. Bugger. Overall the machine hasn't been the same since. I haven't been able to stay online for more than 5 minutes (dial-up / remote host disconnects) which is causing multiple failures while trying to re-attach to cpdn (sorry guys, I think I've wiped about 6 wu's over the past few days - if only BOINC would remember where it was upto and continue downloading from where it left off!).

I upgraded from an Intel 2.0GHz to a 3.2GHz HT with no problems, then I changed from W2K or XPSP2 again with no problems. BOINC and CPDN were fine...happy days.
