81) Questions and Answers : Windows : Sudden extra credits? (Message 24219)

I seem to recall my RAC dropping when I went from regular slabs to Sulphur cycle, that was never addressed.

I can already see the rankings at a couple of the big team sites being screwed about. I suspect there will be more said about this.

So those running sulphur cycle that have not had their \"bonus\" yet will receive it today?

Surely everyone should receive a boost then not just a random few.

If you look at the stats page I linked, you\'ll see some who regularly contribute get nothing, others that have not contributed at all recently have got some, and variations in between.

I seem to get 160.7 credits per trickle incidently.

A large number of my team members received a sudden influx of credit yesterday. People that normally earn 3-400 per day yesterday received thousands! Not everbody was so blessed, others that get credit every day received their normal quota.

My current Sulphur Cycle model is grinding enexorably to completion. When the last one finished, it downloaded a new Sulphur Cycle. I see, however, that there are 3 different \"projects\" now, the Sulphur Cycle, BBC, and Seasonal Attribution.

Can I chosse what to do when the current model finishes, or will it just download another Sulphur Cycle wu?
87) Questions and Answers : Windows : RPC error. (Message 23272)

Post:
The CPDN server is not responding correctly to the officially published team_email_list RPC. Rather then returning an XML list of users/userdata for team \"n\", it returns an error stating that only a team founder can edit team details. This is incorrect. At other projects where I have found this error, it was traced to outdated PHP files.

Note: I am using the prefix returned by the get_project_config RPC.

I have 2 Sulphur wu\'s at the moment. Normally, there is only 1 cpdn wu at a time, but I was changing some stuff around and at one point, cpdn was the only process that was not \"Suspended\", so being a dual core machine, BOINC, quite rightly, wandered off and grabbed another one.

This was accidental, but no real problem. The earliest deadline one runs most often, and is indeed, almost 90% complete. From time to time, the STD for cpdn becomes high enough that they are both running. The second one has amassed 373 hours.

Both have deadlines in December, so there is no worries about them missing.

In general, if you have 2 wu\'s, and they will complete without a long edf session, I\'d leave then to run. No need to abort them.

As for restoring and retrying a crashed wu, you need to backup more then just the cpdn directory, you need things like client_state.xml from the BOINC directory, and the various \"slots\" directories. I backup the entire BOINC directory once a week, (you need to stop BOINC before you do this otherwise some important files are \"in use\" and won\'t get copied).

There is another thread here following my adventure with a test restore. You can read my page here. It is a little out of date now, as the \"No new work\" feature would now be used, but the essence is there.

My cpdn machine normally submits at least one trickle a day, but has only seen 1 reported here since 27th May. I\'ve seen this kind of thing before, and it sorted itself out, so was not overly worried by it.

I notice on the stats page the number of items in the \"waiting validation\" is quite high. Looking at my teams stats pages, there seem to be an awful lot of zeroes which suggests this is a general effect and that you are not being targetted Bob!!!
90) Questions and Answers : Windows : Some kind of loop - no progress. (Message 22060)

I resumed CPDN and wiggled the quotas to get it running straight away, it flickered for a while longer, then sat doing nothing visible for a while, (status was running but elapsed time was static), and then seemed to resume normally.

I am running 5.2.13 at this time on that machine.

Cheers Les.

I am aware of the 0% for a while after a reboot, I have seen this before, and it has always rectified itself shortly after the quantum starts.

The real issue is this loop though. If the application is starting and exiting again after less then a second, it will never sort itself out. I have not seen this behaviour before.

The unit was exactly 20.00% complete before this happened. I have CPDN suspended at the moment pending advice.

Something has gone wrong with one of my CPDN wu\'s. It has not crashed, or rather, I don\'t think it has, but at the same time, it seems to be crashing once a second. Let me explain.

Earlier this year, I goofed whilst suspending and resuming projects. At one point, only CPDN was enabled, and of course, being a HT processor, BOINC trotted off and downloaded a second sulphur wu. Net result is I have 2. This is not a serious issue as both will complete well before their due date.

In order to keep the trickles flowing at a reasonable rate, I\'d taken to suspending one wu and crunching the other for a week or so, then reversing the set up. There are numerous other projects running on this system I should add, but CPDN is the highest CPU quota, 30% on a 3.2GHz p-IV HT Prescott, running Win XP and with the BOINC 5.2.13 core.

I\'d not touched CPDN today, but suddenly, this afternoon, my system went weird. The pointer kept flashing between the normal arrow, and the arrow with an hourglass, (is hourglass all one word?).

I assumed this was due to the crazyness going on with my testing of IE7 Beta 2, but no, killing IE7 did not help.

The task manager showed that sulphur_4.22_windows_intelx86.exe was running as normal, but \"the other program\" - you know what I mean, was popping up, running for less then a second then disappearing again. This was going on and on and on.

At the same time, perhaps not suprisingly, BOINC Manager was showing the task as \"Running\" but nothing was happening to the times.

I have rebooted of course, and it started doing exactly the same thing when it got a quantum.

The wu has been posting trickles for the last few days, (ignore the gaps, I was crunching another project almost 100% because my team manager wanted it done), and everything seemed to be great.

The wu has crunched 342:35:00 and was at 20.00% completion, although since the reboot, the times are right, but the % shows zero.

Obviously, I don\'t want to crash it unless I have too. I have a backup from roughly week ago, but it is a load of hassle to do that when you have a lot of other projects running.

Is there something here that is a familiar problem, (I did a quick search but could not find anything)? Is there something I can do?

I should add, I am quite happy reading/editing XML or whatever. Looking for a way forward.

Current status is I have suspended CPDN, and not attempted to try the other wu I have, (which has 1202:36:19/75.92% accrued), in case I damage it.

Sensible suggestions welcome.

What user name did you try to use on the Message board?
I\'ll see if it can be activated.

The usual, \"adrianxw\". I use the same handle on all the DC projects, plus all but one of the other fora I use on the net. No rush. Thanks Les.
And the new project is separate again.
I think they want results asap for this one, not in a couple of years.

Yeah, I simply don\'t have the resources at this time.

Thank you for that. I\'ll find an envelope to do some calculating on the back of, and see if I can contribute a little!

You misunderstand, the forum I could not get into was the one here, not at the new project.

This one.

I should add, I wondered if I needed to register for that forum seperately, but trying to create an account told me the name and e-mail address were already in use.

I had a question about the new Attribution project, but haven\'t joined the project yet as I needed an answer before I did!

No worries, I\'ll jump into the forum here and ask - no trouble - errrm, wrong!

I tried to log in with my username and password and it said I couldn\'t. So I guessed I\'d forgotten my password, (unlikely), and tried the password recovery. This failed and gave me this...
Sorry, but your password cannot be retrieved because your account is currently inactive. Please contact the forum administrator for more information.

... so I am!

In case anyone was curious, I wanted to now the deadlines on the Attribution wu\'s. I see they take 3-4 weeks on a P-IV but am guessing that this figure is with 100% CPU quota, this will not be possible here, I have 10 projects running on this machine and 4 on my other. I have no wish to download work and then have to junk it.

Oddly, I didn\'t have any trouble getting into this board, which I assume uses the same login as the other?

... it doesn\'t seem to be doing me any harm, so I ignore it, but someone somewhere may be interested.

Experiment log.

Summary, it would seem that the representation of zero is not a factor. Integer or real versions are accepted at some sites and ignored at others.

Okay Les, I\'ll try an experiment. I have set it to zero, (integer), and expect all projects to continue. Then I\'ll set it to 0.0 and see that they all complain. Will update the experiment log and report back once I have done so.

Excellent. Thanks for that. I will be updating my experiment log tomorrow. I have noticed a number of things, none particulaly damaging, but sufficiently odd to be note worthy. I will post here once I have done the updates.
