1) Questions and Answers : Windows : Question about my unit. (Message 70649)

Post:
I've aborted the unit. Most annoying, it had accumulated 16 days plus change, that is a lot of time other projects could have used. I remember some while ago I was similarly annoyed by the project, useless credit is not compensation for wasted CPU time that some of the other projects could have used. I am dropping the project again, it is not "running" right.

My system is crunching wah2_eas25_a4e1_202012_24_1004_012253799_1. It said, yesterday evening, that it had 2d 01:02:16 left to run, that time was reducing normally. I expected to see it with 1d ... etc. remaining. This morning, it is showing 2d 07:18:12, ie. longer than yesterday evening. Is that normal expected behaviour. Deadline is over a month away, so not an urgent issue.

I am leaving the project, I see 9 - 10 days of CPU time spent on tasks that are being scrapped as "not needed". The approach here is wrong, those 9 - 10 days of CPU time, (4GHz i7), would have been USED by other projects for genuine work. I say wrong, quite frankly it stinks.

Good grief. I have set "No new tasks" again. Can you people FINALLY publicise a definitive course of actions so crunchers, any that are remaining of course, know what to do when the problem strikes. Aborting a completed task which has weeks of work completed is not an option.

I am very close to deleting the project from my portfolio.

I clicked the "Abort transfer" tab from the Commands list. That did clear it from my transfers list, which is now blank as usual, and updated CPDN on the regular BOINC Manager screen. This action appears to have had the desired effect.
I have removed the "no new tasks" flag also.

My BOINC is 7.22.2 (x64).

Then he says to abort it. Grrrrrrr!!!!! That ran for 17d 09:44.24 on my 4GHz i7. Yes, you're right, I AM really annoyed. I'd set no new tasks earlier when this problem started, I'm not considering taking that off.

The entire session is included in the message I posted yesterday, it is a couple of messages back. I've turned the log switches off again now. If you want any more, just say, happy to help.

This line is possibly interesting on my logs...

... this, presumably means that the file is uploading correctly, and that the problem is server side because it is not sending some kind of acknowledgement to satisfy the sending task.

The problem I mentioned above, (10th I think), where I reported one eas successful transfer, and one that did not complete is still present here.
I added the log flags and tried again now, this is the result. I don't know if that helps at all. It appears to transfer, but does not get an ack back.

I said this earlier, the deadline for these jobs is wwwwwaaaaaaayyyyyyyyyyy off. Let him do his stuff in his own time. Better it gets done correctly, and ideally, with as much information learnt as possible to circumvent future issues.

Best wishes.

Your reply was a bit of a surprise there... The 20 going up to 50 completed work units per day was a bit of a shock. I would have expected a "massively parallel process" to be returning 20 - 50 or more work units per minute...

One of the eas units that complete and "stuck" in upload HAS uploaded this morning. The other is still here. I've tried a manual push, but that doesn't change anything. I can well understand that the upload server would be swamped with work though.

Off topic observation, the nz tasks all completed normally and have uploaded. The eas ones are stuck, as per the thread here. I have not received any new tasks from the project since the nz's uploaded.

Well, perhaps CPDN was the wrong vehicle to run their job on. Run it themselves or WCG as alternatives.

Surely, it is the responsibility of the project scientists to state during the initial stages of project development to specify the kind of turn round they need for work units. Whinging about it later is pointless if that was not done.

With the deadlines set as they are for these files, ie. next summer some time, it is not really an urgent issue. Let him get back into things in his own time.

These stuck transfers are, indeed, eas files. The deadline for the jobs is next summer some time, thus, a curiosity rather than an urgent matter.

I have another of these files "stuck" in upload now. The first one is still there, its Elapsed is now 5:17:12!!! The other has a measly 33 seconds. It is a zip file of comparable size to the first one.

Something else you might want to mention to Andy, concerns my displeasure with the way tasks have been sent. This is a four core eight thread machine, so it downloaded eight work units. These jobs take sixteen to seventeen days to run, and BOINC has stopped work from all my other projects to run them. This, obviously, includes GPU work. I have suspended six of these new tasks and will release them one at a time as jobs finish, (and presumably get stuck like the first one...). I shouldn't have to micromanage this.
