Thank you for your reply ... I'll continue to be patient while problems are resolved with the CPDN and affiliated servers. But your comment:
With regard to your hadcm download failures, moderator Thyme Lawn has said:
Download of the application version stamp files failed. Computers which started running [ie which successfully downloaded a model] had all previously run a HadCM3N v6.07 task; those which failed [to download a model] hadn't. That suggests the application version stamped files are missing from the download server.
... prompts me to wonder, could I perhaps locate and copy "hadcm3n_se_6.07_windows_intelx86.zip", "hadcm3n_um_6.07_windows_intelx86.zip", and/or "hadcm3n_data_6.07_windows_intelx86.zip" from another computer (that I've had participating in the CPDN project for a much longer time) over to computer 1243226 that's having the most acute download problems (since it's new to CPDN and as yet has no active CPDN tasks), so that its next hadcm download attempt might be successful ? What this question really boils down to, I think, is whether the physical presence of these files in the BOINC data folder alone sufficient, or would I also need to edit or create corresponding entries in some xml local(?) file that BOINC and/or the CPDN project uses to "remember" that these shared/common files have already been downloaded and exist locally on the computer ?

Whether or not this is advisable and "worth the effort" (and worth the risk of unintended bad consequences) also depends on how soon the necessary "application version stamped files" will be restored on the download server. If a remedy on the server side is just a day or two or three away, then being patient and doing nothing at my end may be the best approach ... but in the event it could take a week or longer for this to resolve by itself (i.e., on the server side), then it might be worth the effort for me to attempt a manual patch here on this new (to CPDN) computer on which I'd like to start number-crunching. Any thoughts ?

Thanks again,

-- Jim

I was under the impression the "download errors" would cease on their own once problems were remedied on the server side, but now I'm not so sure ... I am still being plagued by these, but looking at others who were assigned the same CPDN model tasks, not everyone's work units are failing with "Error while downloading" ... so could it be a configuration problem on my end ? Here are the work units of a computer on which I've yet to successfully download a CPDN model task, after several weeks of patiently waiting for success ....

With the information recently added to this thread, I will enable http logging in case that will offer any helpful clues.

Thanks,

Besides the "transient HTTP error"s (which appear to leave the file in the Transfers queue, in hopes of success on a future attempt), a download of mine just now encounted several "permanent HTTP error"s that resulted in the Task status being "Download failed."

Yes, thank you Les and others who work tirelessly to keep everything up and running.

I just wanted to add an 'FYI' that the uploader server issues again seem to be interfering with attempts to download work from the 'reference site' onto a windows machine which I've just set up for CPDN number crunching. Searching the forum archives, my symptoms are the same as those experienced and explained in message 44708 (http://climateapps2.oerc.ox.ac.uk/cpdnboinc/forum_thread.php?id=7442&nowrap=true#44708). Per the advice given there, I'll just remain patient while everything is returned to normal.

Thanks again,

I can only conclude from looking at all the tasks in your workunit that the majority of members never look at the graphics, or don\'t realise that they should ask about abnormal graphics, or know there\'s a problem but don\'t know what to do, or set & forget without ever checking anything.

I confess that of late I myself have been in the \"never look at the graphics / set it & forget it\" work mode too. But I have five similar low-end dual Xenon CPU servers (cheap eBay acquisitions) I\'m using as high throughput workstations for data analysis (and for CPDN when not engaged in that activity), and yesterday I noticed that the \"average work done\" tally on one of the machines was roughly half that of the others, suggesting one of the pair of CPDN models being run on that machine hadn\'t been uploading trickles for some time. But anyway, looking at one\'s CPDN statistics might be another way for members to notice a problem, since ice world models generally ceases earning credit when they stop uploading trickles, yes?

Are you still in the habit of sending private e-mails to people still running models that have become iceworlds, suggesting that they abort and/or restore it from a pre-ice-world backup to capture ice-world-entry data for Iain ?

One additional hadsm3 ice world model to report:

WorkUnit 6678256, Task ID 10246960.

Machine is Intel Xenon CPU, Windows XP SP3. Once again I find that the Temperature graphic is blue, with no clouds except around the Antarctic coast. Also the model\'s time to completion is rising instead of falling, and for quite some time now the model has not been uploading trickles.

I\'ve recently had to abort two models (on two different computers) that had become iceworlds:

WorkUnit 6278634, Task ID 8362432.

and

WorkUnit 6277746, Task ID 8354443.

Both machines are Intel CPUs, Windows XP SP3. Temperature graphics on both were blue, with no clouds except around the Antarctic coast. Time to completion was rising instead of falling, and models were no longer uploading trickles.

Just an update:

1) It took me an extra week to find time to get back to this model and take any action (so it continued to run for an extra week since last report to this thread), and when I did so I found the model was still (a week later) stuck in a loop around timestamp 939,635 --- i.e., it had not managed to work it\'s way out of whatever trap it had fallen into.

2) Looking at the time-stamp of my backup from 27-Jan-2009, compared to the GMT time-stamp of the last successful trickle upload, I could not convince myself any evidence existed that the model worked normally *after* that backup (which also involved a system shutdown, although supposedly a \'graceful\' one). So I became suspicious that the 27-Jan-2009 backup might not be trustworthy for this CPDN model task. And indeed when I did restore it from the 27-Jan-2009 backup, it went into \"iceworld\" mode almost immediately after resuming the model (within a handful of time steps).

3) Therefore I decided instead to restore this model task from an earlier backup (about 1 week older), which I did on 17-Feb-2009. I\'m happy to report back now that the model has been crunching normally for the last week or so and has now progressed beyond the point (last valid trickle reported was at time step 1,425,600) around where the problem occured previously, and is once again reporting new trickle uploads. As far as I can tell, all looks normal.

The BOINC manager reports I still have another 710 cpu hours to completion, but with any luck this model task will indeed finish successfully (eventually).

Cheers,

Mo.v --

Following the link you provided, I find:

Q. How do I shut BOINC down now? Exiting BOINC Manager, BOINC and the applications keep on running! And how do I get it running afterwards?
A. There are a couple of ways to shut down the service.
The easiest method to shut down BOINC and get it running again is to go through BOINC Manager->Advanced view->Advanced->Shut down connected client. This will shut down the service. Next you go File->Exit to close down BOINC Manager.

To start BOINC back up, go Start->Programs->BOINC->BOINC Manager. This will start up BOINC Manager, which in turn starts the service.

which seams to suggest (or at least, doesn\'t recommend against the idea) that the \"Shut down connected client\" (my step #6) can be done without first \"Suspend\"ing all model tasks running on the machine (my step #5 -- sorry, the \"wait for CPU time to stop accumulating\" belongs attached to step #5, not to step #6 as written [too quickly] by me below -- i.e., I \"suspend\" the tasks then wait to confirm they all stop accumulating CPU before going on to step #6 and shutting down the connected client).

Omitting step #5 from the Post-It-Note(TM) instructions would retire my concern about computer (and BOINC service) restarting whenever someone reboots it back to Windows, but then having CPDN model tasks being left for days in \"suspended\" state (if nobody is available or remembers to perform step #10) ... but is omitting step #5 okay based on experience of those reading this thread ?

All-caps JIM says he performs backups every day ... assuming he shuts down BOINC service completely before initiating backups (necessary in my experience to avoid WinZIP not being able to access certain files in BOINC data directory \"locked\" by the service whenever it\'s running), does he \"suspend\" all the CPDN model tasks before shutting down BOINC for each daily backup ?

Thanks much,

-- Jim

P.S. Apologies if this post seems somewhat tangential to the thread topic, but my gut feeling matches Mo.v\'s that what sent this model into chaos was most likely a not-sufficiently-graceful shutdown (abrupt turn off?) of the computer, and so it\'s relevant what steps belong on the Post-It-Note(TM), as a bare minimum....

Post:
As I stated below, this computer is only connected to the internet once or twice per week (it\'s a \"spare\" computer I have at work and watch over now and then). As I\'m not using it routinely, I\'ve made it available for visitor/guest use, and since it dual boots Windows and Linux, colleagues and guest users can shut it down and reboot it at will (whether or not all Windows shutdowns are \"graceful\", I cannot say for sure, but it\'s likely BOINC manager is still running the 4 tasks when/if even a \"graceful\" Windows shutdown is requested).

Looking at the other CPDN models running on this computer, I see trickle uploads on 28-Jan-2009, 03-Feb-2009, 06-Feb-2009, and 10-Feb-2009, suggesting whatever anomaly may have sent this model into a tailspin happened between the 28-Jan trickle and the next network-open opportunity on 03-Feb. As the trickle dates are GMT and the date I quoted for my backup was local time (GMT -8 hours), I expect these were nearly coincident in time (i.e., the backup is not a day earlier than the last trickle -- sorry for the confusion).

My sporadic CPDN maintenance routine \"usually\" goes like this ...

1. Re-open network connection to internet (requires manual authentication to get through a company firewall).

2. In BOINC manager, change from \"Network Activity Suspended\" to one of the other choices.

3. Prompt BOINC manager to communicate over network.

4. Wait while any pending uploads/downloads occur, monitoring the BOINC manager \"Transfers\" tab.

5. When completed, \"Suspend\" all tasks.

6. Shutdown connected client, and wait for CPU time reported for all tasks to stop increasing.

7. Close down BOINC manager window, and close (Exit) the BOINC taskbar icon.

8. Backup entire BOINC data directory tree using WinZIP.

9. Shutdown the machine, and reboot it, and login.

10. Open BOINC manager and \"Resume\" all tasks.

11. Suspend network activity (since firewall authentication will expire after a few hours of inactivity and in any case overnight).

(If I don\'t have time at any particular moment to do a backup [or it\'s only been a few days since the last backup], I just do steps 1 -- 4 and 11 to allow network communication to occur.)

Is this a reasonably good step-by-step procedure for me to be using on this machine ?

Given the chance for less graceful (as far as BOINC is concerned) shutdowns in between my sporadic checking-in on things, and the big negative delta-time-step between the 28-Jan trickle (time step 1,425,600) and my belated discovery yesterday of the \"iceworld\" graphic appearance (timestep 939,635 reported), I\'d be inclined to restore this model task from the 27-Jan-2009 backup (GMT 28-Jan-2009) I made just after that trickle, and see what happens. Presuming that if this model task were healthy on 03-Feb-2009, it likely would have reported a trickle while I had the network open on that date, so if the restored model task encounters the same anomaly, the repeated failure ought to be apparent in less than a week.

Maybe one \"lesson learned\" here (particularly if this model task runs fine once restored from backup) is that I need to post instructions near this machine for colleagues / visitors, \"Please follow these steps to shutdown Windows XP and reboot\" ... if steps 5 and 6 from my recipe should be performed before every otherwise \"graceful\" shutdown of Windows ? (Unfortunately that also means I must rely on colleagues / visitors / guest-users to perform step 10 whenever Windows is rebooted, otherwise days could go by with the computer running but model tasks remaining in the \"suspended\" state ... assuming there\'s no automatic \"resume tasks on restart\" option in BOINC manager I don\'t know about ?)

Thanks for any additional advice or comments,

-- Jim

Post:
I\'m starting this new thread since the existing \"Iceworld\" number-crunching thread(s) pertain to HadSM3/HadSM3H models, and I need to report \"Iceworld\" -like behavior with a HadCM3-ivolc model (hadcm3ivolc_l4h1_2000_08_26002275_2) on one of my computers. Here\'s some hopefully-relevant information:

1. Model/ResultID ... follow link to Task ID 8149927.

2. Current timestep reported on the graphic display for this model was reported ABOUT 5 HOURS AGO to be 959,639 of 2,073,960 (Phase 1 of 1), corresponding to model date and time are 13/06/2056 11:30. Currently (5 HOURS LATER), the status is timestep 939,635 with corresponding date and time of 13/06/2056 09:30, indicating it\'s gone backwards slightly since I last checked it.

Via private message, I learned from Mo.v that:

If HADCMs get stuck they\'re supposed to repeat crunching from the last checkpoint (6-day period), then if that fails to get through the problem point, repeat the last model month, then from the start of the model year. It could be that your model is still trying these loops and may yet succeed in getting through its computational nightmare. If the looping process fails to save a HADCM they\'re supposed to crash.

It\'s a long time since we had a report of a looper.

Last trickle was reported on 28-Jan-2009 (but this machine is only connected to the internet one or two days per week), at timestep 1,425,600 (which doesn\'t make sense ... except maybe if it\'s looped way way back?). For what it may be worth, I have a WinZIP backup archive of my BOINC data (work) folders on 27-Jan-2009, so I could restore this model from that date.

3. The s/TS value on the globe graphic reported 5 HOURS AGO the Hours Elapsed were 2298:48:08 (8.62 s/TS). Currently (5 HOURS LATER) the Hours Elapsed are 2305:25:50. Consistent with HadSM3 \"Iceworld\" behavior, these s/TS values now are much greater (slower) than that reported during the last trickle on 28-Jan-2009 (which back then was 4.893 s/TS), when the model was working \"normally\".

4. The temperature display of the globe graphic is blue. Clouds only appear surrounding the coastline of Antarctica and over the north pole.

5. What processor/CPU is (i.e. Intel, AMD) ? My Processor is GenuineIntel, Intel(R) Xeon(TM) CPU 2.80GHz [x86 Family 15 Model 4 Stepping 10]. Operating System is Microsoft Windows XP Professional x86 Editon, Service Pack 3, (05.01.2600.00).

6. Overclocking ? No. However, on this same machine I\'ve had 2 previous HadSM3 models turn into iceworlds.

I won\'t abort the model or reset it back to the 27-Jan-2009 backup until after receiving replies in this forum indicating some consensus recommendation.

<snip>

Edit...I should have just listened to Iain. All iceworld ResultIDs listed in this thread, and other iceworlds in the same work units, were Intel/Windows.

I have my PCs (including those I\'m using to crunch models for CPDN) configured to dual boot WinXP Pro SP3 and Linux. Specifically, the Linux distribution I run is Scientific Linux v4.x, which is built from Red Hat Enterprise Linux v4.x source RPMs (if you click on the link, expect to see a notice about an expired security certificate or something -- I believe it\'s safe to ignore the warning and proceed to the site). The non-root disk partitions where I keep my BOINC data files are FAT32, and thus are visible (read/write, no problems) on the machine regardless of whether it\'s running the WinXP or Linux operating system.

Thus far, I\'ve only been running BOINC while the machines are booted and running Windows (in part for convenience, and mostly that I recall reading somewhere that BOINC and/or CPDN on Linux requires RHEL v5, or at least an upgrade to the v4.x glibc library, and who-knows-what-else ... likely much more) -- but the reply posts in this thread raise in my mind the question whether the data files in the BOINC project folders (for models in progress) are OS neutral, and whether a Linux platform could continue to process a model begun on a Windows platform ? (Probably not ... and sorry if this is a FAQ ...). I realize that this probably wouldn\'t be simple to configure and accomplish, even if it were possible, but given the ease of being able to boot the machine to either OS and the desire to restore-from-backup-and-complete my models that became \"iceworlds\" under WinXP, I thought I\'d ask anyway ...

Thanks,

I\'m posting to report that the model \"hadsm3_ki4g_006004498_3\" I\'ve been processing has also turned into an \"iceworld\". Here is the rest of the information requested:

1. A link to the model/ResultID webpage

This link points to results for my Task ID 8152663.

2. A current timestep of that model (on the globe graphic)

Timestep is 27,555 of 259,248. Model date and time are 05/07/2052 01:30. Last trickle was reported on 09-Dec-2008, at timestep 21,604 (but this machine is only connected to the internet one or two days per week, and not at all between 12-Dec-2008 and 03-Jan-2009). For what it may be worth, I have WinZIP backup archives of my BOINC data (work) folders on 08-Dec-2008, 11-Dec-2008, and 04-Jan-2009. I hadn\'t noticed \"iceworld\" appearance until today (04-Jan-2009), when I checked it *after* I\'d re-established the internet connection and completed all pending transfer uploads, suspended all BOINC CPDN tasks, shutdown the BOINC client, closed the BOINC manager, backed-up my BOINC data (work) folders with WinZIP, defragmented the disk, shutdown the computer for a cold reboot, and then resumed the BOINC CPDN tasks.

3. The s/TS value (on the globe graphic. Remember, you can hit the Z key while viewing the globe and it will give you this additional text/status information.)

The ^Z key screen reports Hours Elapsed 1448:02:13 (6.47 s/TS).

4. Whether the temperature display of the globe graphic is blue.

Yes, temperature display is blue. Clouds only appear surrounding the coastline of Antarctica.

5. What your processor/CPU is (i.e. Intel, AMD)

Processor is GenuineIntel, Intel(R) Xeon(TM) CPU 2.80GHz [x86 Family 15 Model 4 Stepping 10]. Operating System is Microsoft Windows XP Professional x86 Editon, Service Pack 3, (05.01.2600.00).

6. Whether you are overclocking.

No. However, this is the 2nd HADSM3 model on this machine to turn into an iceworld. The first instance was described in this message thread.

I\'ve now aborted this model, but if asked, I\'d be happy to restore and restart it from one of the earlier backups cited above.

Thanks Les for the link to the \"alternate\" forums. Using the selective backup instructions, over lunch yesterday I was able to restore the \'ice-world\' model task to its pre-ice-world state (from 05-Nov-2008), and after restarting it, confirmed it was running OK and it both looked and behaved normally. Checking it this morning, I discovered it had once again become an \'ice-world\' and that computation had reached the same percent progress (94.595%) where CPU remaining \"To Completion\" had stopped decreasing before.

So I\'ve aborted this model. Please let me know if there\'s any value in using my 05-Nov backup for this model \"on the verge\" of becoming an ice-world, for any diagnostic / investigation purposes at your end. I\'d also be curious to know when/if you hear from Daboo what\'s become of his attempt to complete this same model task under Windows.

Thanks again for your help and advice. I\'m now subscribed to the \"news\" thread (which is one of the \"alternate\" forums at the destination of the link that Les provided two postings up above), and will try to keep up with those alerts from this point forward.

Hi mo.v --

Thanks for the explanation and pointer to previous threads about this issue. As it appears possible that some machine-dependent \"glitch\" may have triggered the model\'s transition into an \'iceworld\', I do now recall that a week ago I did experience a \"blue screen\" crash on that computer (an HP ML150 G2 server I named \"b\" since it\'s my second one at work) starting-up a software tool that was seriously incompatible with the SATA disk controller driver in that machine (my first ML150 G2 machine uses SCSI). Given, as you pointed out, someone has successfully completed this model under Windows, might it be worth a shot to restore it from my WinZIP backup of the BOINC data folder tree contents on 05-Nov (one day before the last trickle was uploaded for the model that\'s now an \'ice-world\', and when all still appeared to be normal) and let it run for another week or two just to see if it becomes an \'ice-world\' again ? Absent a repeat of whatever \"glitch\" triggered the \'ice-world\' the first time, it could finish completely in another 10-days or so....

Under the BOINC data folder, I see subfolders for \"projects\" and \"slots\", and under BOINC\\projects\\climateprediction.net\\ there is one subfolder per model. Seems straightforward to restore selectively the subfolder for the \'ice-world\' model only (leaving alone the subdirectories for the other 3 models in progress on this machine, which appear to be doing fine). I think I\'d also need to diff the *.xml files in the parent BOINC data directory, and whatever portions apply to the \'ice-world\' model will also need to be set back to what they were on 05-Nov before restarting BOINC. But is there anything I also need to restore selectively in the BOINC\\slots\\ directory tree, say for the slot running the model that\'s become an \'ice-world\' ?

Thanks again,

18) Questions and Answers : Windows : HADSM3 total CPU time goes up, but so does To Completion ! (Message 35501)

Something seems to be awry with this task:

> Task ID 8083338
> Name hadsm3mh_kj5j_005999507_7
> Workunit 6234188
> Server state In Progress
> Computer ID 909163

It continues to crunch (at least CPU time reported in BOINC manager keeps rising -- currently up to 1106-hrs 50-min and climbing), but the CPU time \"To Completion\" reported by BOINC manager is *increasing* (slowly ... 62-hr 34-min yet to go ... 94.595%), so it appears I\'m not getting any closer to completion.

Calling up the model graphics, I see it\'s up to time step 203224 of 259248 (current model date is 04/09/2062 20:00) but the globe is almost devoid of clouds (only around coast of Antarctica and northern Greenland), no precipation anywhere, and very cold (off-scale at -24C or below) global temperatures.

Although the model is still crunching (time steps and model date/time do very slowly advance), it certainly does seem that something is wrong (both in current year 2062 global climate, and that the longer it runs, the farther from completion BOINC manager says its getting). No trickles have been uploaded for this task in the last 8 days (since 06-Nov), which is also suspicious?

I do have WinZIP backups of my BOINC data folders made on 05-Nov and 12-Nov, but since this machine is running 4 CPDN tasks, I would need special instructions for how to restore from ZIP just one of the four tasks, if advice is to go back to 05-Nov backup for this model and reprocess from that point forward. Or should I just be patient and let it slog through the remaining 56,024 time steps no matter how long it takes ?

Watching the BOINC manager graphics for this task, it seems to be slogging along at one time step every 5-min or so, which could mean another 5,000 hours (not 62-hrs) assuming the model neither crashes nor speeds up again.

P.S. I looked at the what other CPDN volunteers+computers have been assigned this same model task, I see someone else is running it with the exact same accumulated credit as I have so far (stuck in a similar state?), but meanwhile someone else _has_ completed the model, and their Phase 4 (P4) temperature and precipitation plots looked relatively \"normal\" -- certainly not the same cloud-free, dry, and cold year 2062 world I\'m looking at ... suggesting execution of the model at my end experienced a computational glitch at some point recently?

I returned after being away from the university for about 2 weeks to find that this computer had again stopped work on its task, although in this case I\'m not sure a \"crash\" actually occurred. Under the BOINC manager \"Project\" tab, I had previously disabled \"Get new tasks\" so that any \"crash\" while PC is unattended would not result in downloading new tasks (and having those immediately crash, and so on, as happened with this machine once previously). Anyway, this time the BOINC manager (and client?) were still alive and working, but work on the task had apparently stopped with the following messages logged by the BOINC manager:

Upon my arrival, I found the PC still running and the BOINC mananger window still open, and the BOINC client still running, but no active tasks -- indeed, no tasks listed, active or otherwise. My last backup of the BOINC data directory was on 13-Oct-2008, so after backing up the system as I found it today (27-Oct) -- in case I learn it was behaving normally on 10/18 (which I doubt) and might(?) resume from there after download of \"new tasks\" (maybe just the next phase of the current task?) is re-enabled -- I\'ve restored the backup and restarted the task from 4 or 5 days prior to the events in red above. The \"stderr\" {+} button on the web page for the failed(?) task on this computer did not show any error information.

Insights and/or comments anyone ? Checking in on, and backing up, this system (along with a cold reboot for good measure?) more frequently certainly seems like a smart approach. But besides that, what else appears to be wrong here ?

Thanks,

-- Jim

Hi Les --

Thanks for confirming what I already thought was true. Hopefully the trickle upload of intermediate results a few days from now, that duplicate the upload of a few days ago (prior to the compute error), will be easy to identify as such. Still TBD is whether the restarted model will similarly fail roughly a week from now, or whether some other non-model-computation-related event (glitch in hardware or in Windows or some network-triggered event) may have caused the failure this time.

Lesson may be that this machine isn\'t up to the task of running unattended (and without backups) for 1 week reliably (week after week), in which case I\'d either have to swing by the University mid-week to make backups every few days, or disconnect this machine from the CPDN project. We\'ll see....
