1) Message boards : Number crunching : Why do I keep getting a 'Computation Error'? (Message 48149)
Posted 11 Feb 2014 by Bill H
Post:
It may not correspond with your error but I live in an area that gets power cuts. They are not that frequent (say once a month or so) and they don't last long, usually a minute max, however they do cause Computational Error on the Climate Prediction application every damn time.

Does anyone know if there is there any way that I can set up BOINC so that CP will restart at the last clean-point or something?

2) Message boards : Number crunching : No work available (Message 43333)

Post:
Just checked: I have all the projects in the list selected. I also have the box checked that allows substitution.
I have 8gb of RAM (some of which will be in use) and 500Gb of free disk (on the c: drive) and 4 AMD processors.
I am running BOINC 6.12.34 (64)
The response from the server was:-
30/10/2011 14:43:16 | climateprediction.net | Sending scheduler request: To fetch work.
30/10/2011 14:43:16 | climateprediction.net | Requesting new tasks for NVIDIA GPU
30/10/2011 14:43:18 | climateprediction.net | Scheduler request completed: got 0 new tasks
30/10/2011 14:43:18 | climateprediction.net | No work sent

(I think - couldn't look in the two places simultaniously) that there were 2 -EU jobs 'available'
Does this mean I'm only requesting GPU work? (and if so how do I change it?)

The servers say that work is available but it won't give me any.

I have not (to my knowledge) set any preferences that would avoid any CP work. Anyone know what could be wrong?

Despite the new work being flagged in 'News' I still haven't picked up any! PC sitting here with no Climate Prediction to work on :-(

Are there still work units still available or will I have to just wait until I get lucky?

Congrats - I seem to be missing out on what (little) work there is to be had :-(

Is there a 'Good Time' to request new work (in GMT please)?

This thread started in mid-May any ideas as to when work may become available -OR- should we (in the short term!), look for other BOINC projects that may need our resources?

The 'Server Status' reports that one upload server is not working but that the others are all OK and have work to send. While I appreciate that the whole thing is very complex keeping the just table updated with the current server status shouldn't be that difficult - or is it?

Meanwhile only one of my processors has CP work and uploads and downloads continue to wait. Perhaps these messages will persuade management to deploy more resources...?

All the best in getting things back on track!

I suspect that the problem is just due to server loading but here are the jobs, which may help diagnosis.

Now BOINC is still waiting for the long-promised downloads but has an upload stuck too.

Weather is raining here - but I can't blame that on the simulation, but maybe it accounts for my crabby mood!

Well the good news is that I have been alloacted some new work - Hooray!!

The bad news is that downloading it has been stuck in the 'Backing Off' for 16 hours - Boo!!

It is obvious with Tornados in the US and ash-clouds from Iceland disrupting Air Traffic, that weather prediction should receive a better priority (ie more money?) from government. Trouble is I can't see that the money spent so far has resulted in better prediction(?)

Perhaps someone can correct me, but in Norfolk, UK the weather seems the same old thing and the prediction 'It will be the same tomorrow as it is today' is much more likely to be right than the Met Office forcast...

Are we (I mean you) getting better at predicting or is the weather itself becoming more complex and hence difficult to analyse?

Bill H

PS Still waiting for work...

Yes, I did read your post. I normally run 7am to 10pm but now have tried 24/7. Still no new work. While I think ClimatePrediction is a worthwhile use of spare PC resources (goodness knows we need better weather forcasting!) perhaps you have already collected all the data you need? Should I run alternative activities that maybe need the processor power more?

Have we done enough and the research is nearing completion? It would be good to have an update...

Still no work - what is going on? My PC is connected and waiting during daylight hours and you'd think that some would come my way.

Is the project coming to an end or were the moderators thinking that the End-Of-The-World prediction for the 21st May might be true...

It would be useful to have an official position on when the 'No Work' dought will cease - Please

I had all four climate prediction jobs terminate unexpectedly and had to start new ones.

Even so I have the same problem with uploading. I have 6 x hadam3p queuing up for upload for over a week...

Any ideas on when the server will be back on-line?

Yes -I can confirm the inconsistent part. It appears only to have blocked the AM uploads on my PC. I noticed that a recent SM passed through without a problem.

It\'s reassuring to know that this isn\'t just a quirk of my PC and that others have the issue too. All servers are reported to be up so that isn\'t the reason and running the upload at 5:30am should (?) avoid network congestion too! Boinc IS uploading something and this is (presumably) being rejected for a good (or perhaps not so good) reason at the server end. Is there a server log file that might give a clue?

Still there must be a lot of systems that don\'t have this problem as it would seem that the majority of users are OK.

BTW it\'s not that I was monitoring uploads, more that network performance \"fell off a cliff\" so I couldn\'t ignore it! :-)

Cheers

I run my Pc mainly on Vista but also have a Windows 7 disk. I have been using this W7 recently due to the high network load generated by the issue on Vista. The W7 Climate model has now completed and has the same symptoms.
