Once started the deadline is then 70+20 days from the date the host computer received the task.

Thank you very much for your insights!
I will see to it that I do finish the tasks within that time frame.

Have a wonderful day!

If you were to run only half the number of tasks at a time (5), it would be well below 5 sec/TS, possibly below 3 sec/TS so considerably increasing throughput.

Thank you very much for your insights!
I paused half of the tasks and limited the number of CP tasks for the future.

Have a wonderful day!

Hello,

I used to run CP for a long time. The WU always had very generous deadlines, usually way beyond what my machines would need. But having more time never is a problem.
However, the recent batches of Windows WU have a really tight deadline and need much more time that shown.

I am not sure how BOINC calculates the total time for each WU, but when I use the values from the BOINC client (progress and CPU time used so far), Excel shows a total CPU-time requirement of more than 45 days, compared to the 16-17 days the BOINC client claims. E.g.
Progress: 8.915%
CPU elapsed: 4d 01:28:00
Remaining (acc. to BOINC client): 12d 17:48:15
Remaining (acc. to Excel): 41d 11:49:18

I don't see such a mismatch with other projects.

I pretty much would have to run my computer 24/7 to make the deadline.
Is that the new policy/requirement? If this is the case, I would have to quit CP after so many years because I don't want to waste WU that I cannot finish in time.
I run BOINC and CP on my home computer which usually runs just between 4-8 hours per day. That always was sufficient to finish CP WU in time, but not with these recent WU.

Any feedback from the CP project team would be helpful,
- whether it is reasonable to run these WU on my computer or not.
- why there is such a mismatch between the time requirement as calculated by the BOINC client vs. Excel.

Thank your very much!

For now it still is marked as " Development version (MAY BE UNSTABLE - USE ONLY FOR TESTING)". Unless you like beta-testing I would not use it.
I assume that they will (try to) fix that issue next week....

But please adapt a new information policy for the future. Either through the project news or a special forum (e.g. by a sticky note).

Hi!

&gt; News on the front page.
I just took a look at it. That's it!
A short statement:
- acknowledging that there is a problem on their end
- some information on when they will be able to tackle the problem
- an estimated time until they will have fixed it (if possible)
- any recommendations for the users, e.g. not to upload results or trickles
- a short note once the problem has been fixed

That is all I need to be a much happier cruncher!
;-)

Please make that a habit!

Thanks!

Hello,

&gt; A simple news posting on the WEB explaining that there is a
&gt; temporary problem but that all data is still being collected would go a long
&gt; way with the volunteer community.
&gt;
&gt; Yes, SETI does go down, much like all BOINC projects. However, SETI does, at
&gt; least, post news items when it happens that explain what is going one and let
&gt; folks know that the processed data is not being wasted.

I agree!
I don't know how the information policy of CPDN compares to other projects but Seti certainly does a better job at letting people know when they are down.

I think it shows some courtesy and respect for the people donating their computer time to keep them informed.
It does not need to be the full story. Just a note that there is a problem, what nature it is and when it is going to be fixed (like "Will be working on it monday morning...").

If I have to research the message groups and built a consensus first every time, just to determine if CPDN has a problem or my machine, that is annoying over time.

I definitely would appreciate it, if there was some information available. Thanks!

&gt; <b>Edits 4th June</b>
&gt; Removed intructions to report resultids, host numbers and WU names. We would
&gt; still be grateful for any reports that indicate a new aspect or different
&gt; affected time period eg affected resultids less than 719000 or greater than
&gt; 890,000.

I don't compute it but I get credits for:
Result ID: 890190
WU ID: 592420
Host ID: 88435

The trickles are listed for Host ID: 173084
(Who probably does the computing...)

13) Questions and Answers : Windows : Crashing consistently just after 30% (Message 12917)
Posted 27 May 2005 by Profile Friedrich S.
Post:
Hi,

I had the first couple of modells crash with an error code -5 under BOINC 4.19, too.
Since I started defragmenting the hard drive(s) on a regular basis (about every 1-2 weeks), that has not happened any more and I am close to completing two more WU. (Keeping fingers crossed).
Before defragmenting the drive make sure you suspend &amp; exit BOINC first.

I have the idea that maybe BOINC 4.19 is not very patient when exiting and that it may terminate the climate modells before all the data has been properly written on the harddrive if the disk is too fragmented.
That would explain why the error code -5 always appeared right after start-up, i.e. when the model tries to load the data files they are corrupted.

Also, I always do suspend and exit BOINMC before shutting down the computer.

Just a thought, but worth trying.

14) Questions and Answers : Windows : Trickle missing - Will WU be credited? (Message 12828)

Post:
Hello,

I finished a CPDN WU a couple of weeks ago, but the result page still shows it as "in progress":
<a href="http://climateapps2.oucs.ox.ac.uk/cpdnboinc/workunit.php?wuid=426755"> </a>

Looks like on trickle from phase 3 is missing (TS 183634). I have no idea where that trickle might have gone. Maybe it was lost during one of the server problems at CPDN?

Will the WU still be usable to CPDN and wil I still get (to keep) my credits?

16) Questions and Answers : Windows : CPIDs linked - Can I detach from second project now? (Message 12576)
Posted 14 May 2005 by Profile Friedrich S.
Post:
Hello,

based on the long thread on unifying the CPID:
http://climateapps2.oucs.ox.ac.uk/cpdnboinc/forum_thread.php?id=1903

I believe the CPIDs for Seti and CPDN have been synchronized. (The settings migrate from one project to the other alright.)

I have one PC with CPDN and Seti, the other ones run CPDN only. I now realize that running CPDN on that old, slow machine just does not work out as it will never finish the WU before the deadline.

Will the projects stay linked even when I detach from CPDN on that machine?

Thanks!

17) Questions and Answers : Windows : Laptop Cooling Fan stops and starts when BOINC becomes active (Message 12575)
Posted 14 May 2005 by Profile Friedrich S.
Post:
I agree.
My (desktop) CPU goes from 35°C to 50°C as soon as CPDN starts running and goes back to 35°C as soon as it stops.
There definitely is a good reason why the fan should be running as soon as CPDN starts. Especially as it will keep your laptop from throttling (or however that is spelled) down.

18) Questions and Answers : Windows : \"Run based on preferences\" Switch for BOINC 4.25 (Message 11850)
Posted 15 Apr 2005 by Profile Friedrich S.
Post:
Hello

&gt; Some people were having problems with CPDN getting corrupted files without
&gt; suspending and exiting before.
Precisely, like loosing a WU. Especially if the drive was fragmented.

&gt; However, 4.25 is doing things differently, and there is a lag after
&gt; exiting the app as CPDN shuts down cleanly. So now I just exit before
&gt; rebooting and everything is fine.
That sounds almost too good to be true.

Thanks for the information!

19) Questions and Answers : Windows : \"Run based on preferences\" Switch for BOINC 4.25 (Message 11838)
Posted 15 Apr 2005 by Profile Friedrich S.
Post:
Hello,

I upgraded recently to BOINC 4.25 on an WinXP system.

When I shut down the computer, I usually "Suspend" and the "Exit". BOINC is started automatically after reboot.

While BOINC 4.19 would always come up as "Run based on preferences", BOINC 4.25 remembers the last state, which of course is "Suspend". I have to change it manually every time.

This is annoying because I run BOINC on a remote controlled computer which I just reboot after servicing it. Now I have to log in again just to have BOINC resume the calculations.

Is there a switch (like the "-min" to run minimzed) that tells BOINC 4.25 to run automatically after it starts?

Thanks!

Hi,

I had the first three models crash, too. All with this famous exit code -5, mostly well below 15% or the work done. My system definitely is stable. Never ever any stability related problem with any application.

Then somebody suggested - and I tried - to regularely defragment the drive. (Of course while BOINC is not running!)
Since then the current two models have been running fine, currently at slightly above and below 35%. I keep defragmenting it about every two weeks, and everything seems fine. (Keep my fingers crossed!)

I am not sure what that means, what exactly was the problems and why it should make a difference. But since it is a real easy thing to do, it might be worth a try.

Friedrich
