This topic has been discussed in the other forum as well....

Take a look here.

Although you can argue over the figures, the total impact seems to be rather samll.

To answer your questions:

1. I leave my laptop running 24/7, because it is relatively fast, and consumes 36W of power, far less than the 145W for the desktop.

2. The electricity that I have is \"Green\", which means that is is generated from renewable sources, mainly biomass here in the Netherlands. Furthermore, I have a PV installation on the roof of my house of 3,2 kWp, which generates most of my electricity. Excess power is fed into the grid and metered separately.

3. Yes, I think this is a contradiction. But in my opinion I have found a way in between, as mentioned above. Also take a look at my profile....

I can also understand the reasons why others leave their computer on, the impact is relatively small (but a poor excuse anyway). astroWX made some good remarks as well.
Buy an accurate power meter, make a round in your house and see what can be taken off stand-by mode or not used altogether. For the average household this is enough to run a climate experiment!

Well, and I thought this was a quiet place!

Lots of replies, that\'s encouraging. In the meantime I found out that the problem is on my side, because I wanted to add a smiley to this post, and the website does not give me the BBC code anymore when I click it.

Ah well, I think it is time for a fresh XP install, I have been having enough problems lately.

Thanks for the replies though...

Because none of the links to the left are working, from \"Home\" to \"Contact and Support\".

I can\'t check the rpogress of Team Wales anymore. This doesn\'t seem to be a problem from my side....

Norton has this nice button that allows me to turn off the firewall for five minutes, enough to do the update.

The problem is firewall-related though, Norton can not even get through it\'s own firewall to check for updates! But I will sort this out..

Diasabled the firewall and manually updated the project. This worked fine, although the messages are different.

The problems seems to be on my side, and not ralted to BOINC. I will run a spyware and virus scan and see where that takes me. Thanks so far....

The problem seems to be that I can not set a standard connection. I was playing around with the proxy settings, but I am not connected to the internet via a proxy server.

How do I set a standard connection in the advanced/options/connections menue?

I have upgraded to 5.8.8, but now BOINC can not connect ot the server anymore.

I have entered my IP adress, username qand password under the advanced/options tab (as HTTP proxy), nut this still does not work.

What to do next?

What I was refering to, is the fact that I have seen some \"optimsed\" BOINC managers around, for instance when crunching for SETI.

They seem to give an increase in s/TS.

But apart from that, I would like to know if I can change to this new BOINC manager without crashing my model.

Hello Carl,

Are there any advantages in the way of computing speed for version 5.8.8?

I have recently attached to the CPDN side, and am now running version 5.4.11.
