21) Message boards : Number crunching : How to find out which project a model belongs to (Message 52189)

Post:
Les, thanks for that explanation.

I saw a thread from Hannah Rowlands http://climateapps2.oerc.ox.ac.uk/cpdnboinc/forum_thread.php?id=8069 in which she said 'I'm starting a new thread here to give you all some more information on work unit batches as they get released, to link them back to the science experiment they are for.'

That's a great idea which could increase interest in the project. Ideally it should be easy to see, perhaps on it's own page maybe linked from the homepage...

What do you think Hannah?

Cheers

Thanks Dave.

- hadcm3s is up there describing Solar-Radiation Management, great.

- I can see links to HadAM3P_EU and HadAM3PM2 models but I cannot find hadam3prm3pm2t_eu specifically. Is that model a mix of other models...? Do we need to interpret something from the title?

Thanks

Hi, at the moment I have the option of downloading either hadam3prm3pm2t_eu or hadcm3s models.

I've forgotten how to find out which project these models are for...so to save me time rooting around can anyone point me to a page that shows which project a model type belongs to? On that page it would also be great to read a summary of the project objectives/results at the same time as well...

Thanks in advance

Dig

P.S. I'm sure the answer is obvious ;)

OK, I have aborted four models before they started and selected 'No new Tasks' while my current models continue crunching.

Thanks

BTW

If I already have 4 models that Boinc has downloaded in anticipation of starting but they have not started is there any way I can 'return' those fresh models to the server for someone else to do?

Obviously I don't expect to send the files back but can I notify the server that they will not be executed and hopefully another machine can get them?

Cheers

Hi I'm looking for some advice...

I am hoping to change my base machine from Windows to Ubuntu. I currently have a folder on Drive F: called boinc containing many files and the subdirectories projects, slots, symbols.

Can I copy this directory straight to an ubuntu installation and continue processing in Linux Boinc where I stopped in Windows Boinc...?

Or will I have to finish all Windows models and start a fresh in my new Ubuntu install?

Thanks

Absolutely.

I also think special mentions should be made for all the forum moderators who spend their time helping the volunteer number crunchers. They provide mentoring, problem solving and all round sanity. Kudos!

Also I think that the guys who do the physical server management at Oxford should have a higher profile / recognition. I may be missing something but I remember knowing of Tolu etc. when they were around but I can't say I know who is there now...

Its nice to pat everyone on the back...

Well I smile when I read the posts from Les...he has grown into quite a sage and just takes it all in his stride.

FWIW I heard a program on BBC Radio 4 last night called 'costing the earth' and there was a chap being interviewed who I believe was a government or academic environmental advisor. He seemed quite matter of fact that climate change was occurring and how this would affect British farming and wildlife etc. He seemed to think that by 2060 our climate would be similar to Madeira's current climate...but after that he did not know what would happen. He said that whilst the UK could warm over the coming years it was protected by the Atlantic sinds and so water would still be available...the same could not be said for other countries. My thoughts were 'Its a shame that politicians are not incentivised to think more than 12 months ahead'...I am all for Greenpeace and FOE etc.

Ok I am a bit confused...

For a long time I had 8 models crunching. I was happy to do the 400hr models but for separate reasons on three occasions in the past 12 months I had a Windoze 7 blue screen of death and this unfortunately trashed some of those models. I was also happy to do the 100hr models because there was a reduced chance of corrupting models.

Recently there have been problems uploading results and lengthy delays to get this resolved. Once this upload was achieved there was a paucity of models to download but eventually after a week I got two models.

I have kept BOINC internet access open all the time to try and get new models to maximise my processor, but to no avail. This morning the 2 models I have tried to upload three times (I have to stop my internet access while this happens) but they errored:

Ques:
1) Is this temporary or do I have to make changes within the BOINC setup?
2) Is it my imagination or is the climate change project a bit 'rocky' at the moment?

If the answer to ques 2 is yes then that would be a shame. Is it short of money? Is there not a grant to do this research?

Climate Change is a real threat and we need to have analytical ammunition to fight the corporates and politicians who want to carry on with 'business as usual' and trash the planet.

Cheers

BTW apologies for this broad post.

Chaps

Since the hooha about uploading files to the server I have had nothing to work on for the past 2-3 days.

climateprediction.net Message from server: Project has no tasks available

1) Is this happening to everyone else?
2) Anyone know when more models will be available for download?

Cheers

Yes all my files have now uploaded. Yesterday I actually got error messages from the server before the upload started...I had planned to send in those server error messages but I got sidetracked....

So all files are uploaded but the Project has no tasks to work on...I hope that changes soon...

Yes all my models are hadam3p_eu3...they are all complete and awaiting to be uploaded...progress is 0%...however last night it appears that a single file called hadam3p_eu_d0ef_2002_1_007966729_0_13.zip managed to get uploaded.

Plainly something is not working. I have four files on Retry (project backoff) etc and 55+ files on Upload Pending (project backoff).

I have stopped processing any models and cannot upload anything...

The servers all appear green...any ideas?

Yes I am also having problems. I have over 50 files to be uploaded and I am unable to receive any new files... Lets hope the server is sorted today because I have no projects to work on at the moment. They are all finished but the server will not take them...

Cheers :o

P.S. Is it possible to upload a screen shot...?

Yes I am back to normal at the server end and that's great news.

The only problem I have since had is a blue screen of death on my Windows 7 desktop...ouch.

The models weren't best pleased and they all finished and went home...:(

Anyway hopefully everything is now back on track again :)

As per http://climateapps2.oerc.ox.ac.uk/cpdnboinc/forum_thread.php?id=5447&nowrap=true#43776 I am stacking up a growing number of uploads for this model.

I look forward to hearing that the problem has been fixed. :)

Thanks Guys

Yes I have around 6 complete HadAM3P-EU and 2 complete Running HadAM3P-SAF models to upload with an average 7 or so files per model...so thats 50 files that need to upload.

Both kraken.oerc and srv1.cpdn.psu.edu say they are running so I guess I just have to wait... :(

Upload server kraken.oerc Running HadAM3P-EU Tasks ready to send 42,167
Upload server srv1.cpdn.psu.edu Running HadAM3P-SAF Tasks ready to send 76,731
