2) Questions and Answers : Unix/Linux : boinc runs and the just stops (Message 7350)

Post:
Hello!

I´m currently trying to run the boinc project Vers. 4.13. This is working until a certain point (this happened to me after step 33, 110, 247), it just stops.
I can still close the application by pressing CRTL-C, and I can restart it, of course.

What I don´t understand is, why it just stops. Here are some hard data:

musik@debian:~ > ps aux | grep _i686
musik 16688 0.0 0.9 2548 1424 tty1 S+ 23:21 0:00 ./boinc_4.13_i686-pc-linux-gnu
musik 16689 0.0 0.5 2048 904 tty1 SN+ 23:21 0:00 hadsm3_4.04_i686-pc-linux-gnu 2tsm_100153258
musik 16753 0.0 0.4 1716 720 pts/0 R+ 23:57 0:00 grep _i686
musik@debian:~ > pstree | grep login
|-login---bash---boinc_4.13_i686---hadsm3_4.04_i68---hadsm3um_4.04_i
musik@debian:~ > top | grep boinc

musik@debian:~ > top | grep hadsm3

musik@debian:~ >

When I restart it now, it will re-run, but I´m sure, it will stop at some point, again. I´ve read post http://climateapps2.oucs.ox.ac.uk/cpdnboinc/forum_thread.php?id=1009 but that didn´t help.

No action has been started during this run, except a "top" surveillance process.

If you need any further information, please write.

Bye!
Stefan, Germany

Hello!

I finally managed to start up the boinc software. Poorly, it doesnt start the way I need it -in the backgound. The following is working:

musik@debian:~ > cd boinc
musik@debian:~/boinc > ./boinc_4.13_i686-pc-linux-gnu

The way, too:

musik@debian:~ > cd boinc
musik@debian:~/boinc > ./boinc_4.13_i686-pc-linux-gnu >>/dev/null

Now, I need to put this into the background. I tried to use this script:

http://noether.vassar.edu/~myers/help/boinc/init.d-boinc

but, that doesnt help. I receive a "Done", when starting this up, but I'm not completely sure about it, as the command :

PID=`pidof $BOINCEXE`
if [ "$PID" != "" ]; then
echo_success
else
echo_failure
fi

doesnt work.
Anyway: top doesn't show me the process, so I believe, it hasn't been started (properly).

Thanks for advice!

cu,
Stefan

By the way: I'm running a SuSE Linux 7.2 box, with almost up-to-date software. Kernel is 2.4.10. I CAN connect to almost all pages, except for the cpdn / boinc pages. The data have been download onto a university's computer and the transfered to my malade box.

PS2: please dont ask me about the box's name, it IS a SuSE box...

Yesterday I tried it with a Win - Client -and it worked! So there cannot be a firewall error. It´s also clear, that I can use the .xml generated by the Win - Client (can I use this?).

No. I´ve got a DSL - connection, which is resetted every 24hours, but this happened about 20hours, ago.

I looked at it, but it didn´t help me. It was again about this firewall issue, but I gave it try without a firewall enabled. It didnt work.

me too. I don´t understand what its problem comes from. Can´t I just download those files manually and copy them right into the directory? This should work -hopefully.

Hi!

I just tried it without my firewall turned on, but that didn´t change the problem.

Still, I´m not able to start, I receive:

2004-10-24 14:01:53 [http://climateprediction.net/] Master file fetch failed
2004-10-24 14:01:53 [http://climateprediction.net/] Master file fetch failed
BOINC couldn't get main page for http://climateprediction.net/.
Please check the URL and try again.

2004-10-24 14:01:53 [http://climateprediction.net/] Detaching from project

The thing is, it CAN download the Master file, but obviously it can´t go on. So what´s wrong here?

Hello!

I´ve got the same problem with my Linux box here. I even disabled the firewall completely, but that didn´t help me out. Can you?
There´s no proxy server running.

Thanks for your help. Please see http://climateapps2.oucs.ox.ac.uk/cpdnboinc/forum_thread.php?id=1135 this is my post...

k. How can I do it? I can´t find a link to edit the post.

I just typed in the address: "http://climateprediction.net/", but I didn´t work out, again.
Is the typed address right?

I used the link offered by climateprediction´s website after registering as a new user.

I´ve allowed it to use up to 2Gigs, that should be enought, not?

They are all set to 'x' for everyone. Does it need to run under a specific user?

Thanks!
