41) Message boards : Number crunching : Frozen WU ??? (Message 25102)

Also note that sulphur models aren\'t of much use to the researchers now, but they ARE (quietly) desperate for another 2-3 thousand more TCMs ASAP.

Is there really such a hurry? If there is, I could alter my preferences a bit... I can\'t offer 24/7, but if I let this box crunch 100% of CPDN for a while 12 hours a day or so should be realistic... which seems to be quite okay as my box takes only about 1100 CPU secs per timestep which is reasonably quick compared to what I\'ve seen out there. Shouldn\'t be slower than your example P4 really.
So, what I want to say is ^^ if it is important for the science just tell me and you\'ll at least get one model back a bit quicker ;-)

A bit less than 2000 hours on an AMD 64 3500+ CPU, 1 GB of RAM, decent Asus Mainboard... seems to be a fairly stable estimate, therefore I think it\'s quite accurate although I\'m only about 100 hours into the WU.

That\'s interesting, seems to depend on the project. Because in Einstein, it\'s the other way round... since my laptop runs Linux, it has pathetic benchmarks but crunches around 10% faster. Unfortuately I can\'t test it with CPDN on that box since it is really too slow for this project... too little RAM, aswell...

Certainly not when I\'m playing the games that use only 60 or 70 percent of my CPU ^^ what a waste of flops. From experience I know how stable my system is and this behaviour has so far caused only one crash affecting BOINC (in about a year). So I gained much more in terms of computing time than I lost. Don\'t worry, I backup regularly, at least after every trickle, so it\'s a calculated risk I\'m taking. Of course I exit before I backup or defrag ;-) or even run my antivirus.

Thanks a lot. The current usage is something I can easily live with even when I\'m gaming or doing hardware-demanding work. And although I like watching the graphics occasionally I would never dream of letting them run by default or when I need the power- after 2 years of making do with an underpowered laptop I know how to use my resources efficiently ;-)

*lol* Okay then. Looks like there is at least some \"flexibility\" concerning the semantic aspect of the project rather than the technical and scientifical ;-)
But btw... what bothers me more than overall runtime of a project (I don\'t mind if I crunch 20 short WUs or a single long one) is the question how much memory it will take later on. I have read that the models get bigger when they come closer to being finished. While I\'m not worried at all about HDD storage space (this PC being new, plus I store most of the less important data on an external HDD) it makes me wonder if it will take more and more memory, too, and how much that would be. Can anyone share some experiences about that? You know, BOINC always runs in the background, so I find it kinda annoying if my memory gets completely stuffed...

Slightly less than 57k on my AMD 64 3500+ (just though I\'d share to give others an idea).

Word, Dagorath. This describes very well how I feel about the project. And of course, being a CPDN noob, the first question I ever posted here was \"what happens if I crash a WU\" ;-) well, it recently happened out of the blue on my box on Einstein and HC due to something as stupid as an outdated sound driver. I was very relieved to hear that one could simply backup the files in the project folder and they would include all the information needed for going on with the model. For me, personally, making manual backups is no problem. I\'m used to backing up (or is it backuping? Sorry, I\'m not a native speaker...) about everything you can put on a webserver, plus part of my private/local data, too, so for me it is easy to fit into my daily routine. But of course I\'m a bit more into IT than most people are and I totally understand if people don\'t have the time/motivation/knowledge to do manual backups themselves and I think that should be no reason to let their work go to waste. So something like an auto-backup is a very good idea...

Dunno about that, never tested. Personally, I\'m using Infineon as a friend of mine (who is an IT pro) said it would go best with my mainboard. But that certainly is an amazing overclock, Jeff, I can only say gratz and good luck for the future ;-)

Just wanted to get back saying everything is okay with my model. The trickle and credit finally arrived. Sorry for getting worried ;-) but as I said, I\'m all new to CPDN so be patient.

I got that one afterwards, on the 16th when everything was up and running again- by contrast to the other 250 *lol*. So I hope there is no problem.
The name of the WU is hadcm3ohc_0b9p_05562964_0

Not quite sure- sorry, I\'m a noob. The thing is that my model trickled for the first time today and according to my BOINC the server was contacted successfully. That was half an hour ago and I don\'t see anything about that trickle under \"my results\". Nor did I get any credit. Is that normal or is something wrong?

Okay, good to know. Thanks for keeping us informed. My comp is not idle so joining a day later is no big deal for me ;-) As I don\'t really have any unwanted models to delete, they, as I said, never reached me, I will simply leave everything alone for the time being and check again tomorrow or later today.

Same for me. I am obviously reported to have downloaded 250 or so different models and they show up on \"my results\" too but none of them ever reached me. My project folder is empty except for the config files and science app and BOINC is so bored it\'s crunching Einstein all the time ;-) not a single CPDN model in sight. I don\'t get any error messages apart from \"no work from project\" and I\'ve never, ever, detached, reset, updated or whatever by using the buttons. I\'ve set BOINC to \"no new tasks\" for the time being so I don\'t make any more models disappear but I hope someone has a more constructive solution for me.
To my technical details: This is a Win XP box, SP 2... hardware shouldn\'t really play a role except internet connection... so, I\'m going online via LAN, meaning a few meters of CAT 5e cable, a switch, a cheap DSL modem/router sponsored by AOL Germany and a 2 MBIT ADSL connection.
As for software, I\'m using avast! antivirus and the free version of Sygate Personal firewall (not my favorite but avast doesn\'t want to play with my first and second option) and none of this has ever caused any problems with other BOINC projects.

Whenever I skype the software flames at me that \"my CPU usage is too high\" but that seems to be a default error message since I never had any problems... it\'s kind of a running gag between me and a friend who does BOINC too. ;-)

Hi guys,

I\'m doing CPDN for the first time after crunching some other projects. Now my experience from HashClash/SETI/Einstein tells me that occasionally people will crash a WU or get an invalid result without a real reason... some people overclocking their PCs too much, others getting problems with the science app, or my computer froze up due to a driver conflict, corrupted some of the data on my HDD and trashed two half-finished WUs in the process. It simply happens, especially on Windows boxes.
But in a project with much much longer runtimes like this one it would be kind of risky if stuff like this happened, so how do you manage to avoid it?
Just curious, I study Informatics and like my gadgets ;-)
Thanks in advance and a big hello to everyone here
Annika
