The only \"64 bit\" models here are slabs. (32 bits in disguise.)
See this page.
So, provided you haven\'t excluded them in your model types selection area, BOINC will automatically send you some.

Thanks Les....

I\'m running slabs on that computer already for the shorter run times. (Less chance of my screwing something up. <smile>

The main benefit is a larger address range, for more memory.
It\'s been reported that a small number of projects (count them on the fingers of one hand), do run faster with 64 bit systems, but most don\'t.
This project, for instance, uses 80 bits of resolution, and there is no difference with this for the floating point unit (FPU), in 32 & 64 bit OS.

PS
The \'64 bit\' models here are just 32 bit models wearing a mask and cape so that they appear to be a more powerful 64 bit model.

Well I got brave and upgraded boinc to the 64 bit version. Lost 2wu\'s with 9+ hours each computing time, but einstein resent them them as well as the others in my cache.

So my next question is - when my sysem hits the scheduler for more work will it then make a determination as to whether or not to send me a 64 bit wu on it\'s own or will I need to use an app_inf.xml file? (provided that the projects support 64 bit wu\'s)

Thanks.....

[edit] I\'m sorry that I am mentioning einstein in this discussion, but I\'m running CPDN on another computer and right now this is a test case to see if I want to change the other system to a 64 bit OS.

[I\'m willing to bet money it\'s Vista. Are you happy with Vista? Or could you go back to Windows XP? If not, then are you running the 32-bit BOINC or the 64-bit BOINC? (Does it say x86 or x86_64?)

http://boinc.berkeley.edu/download_all.php

vista 32bits => boinc 6 version 32 bits
vista 64bits => boinc 6 version 64 bits

XP 32bits => boinc 5 version
XP 64bits => boinc 5 version 64 bits[/quote]

I hope this does come off the wrong way, but I have a question about the 64 bit version as well and I\'m a bit confused. I just upgraded my main system to Vista 64 bit over the weekend from XP SP3 (32bit). I\'m running boinc 5.10.45 with einstein attached to this computer. I\'d read somewhere there were problems with Vista and that we needed to install boinc in its own directory. (ie. C:\\boinc or whatever partition) On this box I have einstein attached and haven\'t had any problems. I have another box with Vista 32 bit that is running CPDN and Milky Way. (boinc set in its own directory there as well.

What is the benefit of using 64 bit boinc as opposed to the 32 bit version? I\'ve heard different projects have or don\'t have 64 bit programs. My main system \"Will\" be the only 64 bit OS here and running einstein.(which I don\'t know if they have a 64 bit version or not)

It really does help when members report problems and anomalies on the forums. It also really helps that CPDN members are almost invariably good-tempered and patient even when discussing the most difficult problems!

There are a lot of things that rate above credits. Your statemnet is one of those other things! <smile>

It\'s always nice to see a huge amount of credits suddenly being applied. <smile>

A bit late to add a comment but I ran into this problem myself back in June. I don\'t know what caused it but while I was watching it I saw CPDN download 2 WU\'s on a single core. I immediately went and told it to not get any more work and that\'s how I keep all my systems until it\'s ready to get more work. I haven\'t seen the problem reappear even after I\'ve enabled work (gets) since then.

PS... I aborted the second WU so that it didn\'t sit on my system for any length of time before it would be sent out again. That system just finished the WU I got in June about a week ago. I registered in Oct last year but didn\'t start processing full time on all 3 computers until June. Since then I\'ve completed I think 3 or 4 models and had one crash with less than 200 hours left. <sigh>

Barry, I couldn\'t check your current model trickles because there are so many computers and so many models..... And I couldn\'t whether your recent trickles are all present and correct, Arion, because your computers are hidden.

I\'m not worried about my credits and I\'ve seen my trickles going up. As for my computers being hidden I have to do that right now because of some testing I\'m doing. I\'ll be releasing them as soon as I am able to. We went through this not long ago for about a week or so and got all our credits over a 2 day period. I\'m not concerned as long as the data is okay.

Looks like, notwithstanding that the outage was only a couple of hours yesterday, data the trickle update statistics outage is still in effect for a second day.

See, I told you I\'d be back this evening to whine. (smile).

And hey I have 3 kinds of cheese too!.. (VBG)

Anybody have decent crackers?

Seriously though, having been through this before I don\'t mind getting a bunch of credits in a lump sum. Just so long as the data doesn\'t get lost.

I came home expecting to see very few points from my Boinc projects (I run Rosetta, CP, World Grid, Spnhenge and Linden)

Anyway I look and I notice a BIG bar on my daily credit graph. Then I notice that CP gave me just over 2000 points! At first I thought my model had died on me, but it was still fine. So how did this happen??

I\'m curious about this as well. I got 33,071 credits today. Do we get extra credit for FINALLY finishing one of those 160 year models?

PS... I checked all of my systems stats and added them up and they add up to what it says I\'m supposed to have based on the additional 33,000 credits.

Hi Arion and welcome.

Remember that the cpdn workunits are massively long compared with other projects, so a few extra precautions are required here to avoid disappointment. I\'d recommend a look at the project READMEs linked through my sig. Don\'t try to read the lot!

When I tried to run CPCN back in Oct, it was on my slowest system. (also used for beta testing etc.) That\'s the main reason I aborted the workunit since with beta testing different products I couldn\'t be assured that I\'d ever complete the unit. That and my mistaken idea that you wouldn\'t get any credit until it was completed. I mentioned this a few weeks ago on the einstein boards while they were undergoing the changeover to the new units. I was informed that CPCN does trickle up credits on a regular basis, depending on the speed of the system. During the past few days (after switching one of my cores from einstein to CPCN) I\'ve noticed that I\'m averaging between 500 to 1000 units a day on my main system.
Earlier I had posted when I was having some problems and someone suggested that I read the readme sections as well. I have been reading them quite a lot and especially the parts about upgrading the client and the importance of backups. Changes on my system are very infrequent but I can see the importance associated with those \"helpful hints.\" Now all I have to do is get in the habit on this system of making more frequent backups. <smile>
Thanks so much for the help and kind words.

I\'ve been crunching for different projects for a number of years. Seti since Aug 1999, Einstein since Oct.2005, and ClimatePrediction off and on (full time just a couple of weeks ago.

I don\'t know who the kind person was that brought up ClimatePrediction here recently, but as a consiquience when seti went down, I turned to CPCN as a backup to seti on one of my computers when their servers went down. After having a few problems getting started I was amazed by the friendliness the folks here and how helpful they were in such a short period of time.It rememinded me of how it used to be back in the easly Seti Classic days and how I have longed for a community where rational discussion and friendly people can be found.

I have therefore dedicated my faster system to CPCN, Midrange (wife\'s to einstein, and the slowest to seti) if seti continues to have the problems they have had and the number of posts asking for donations doesn\'t slow down, I\'ll be converting that system over to a shared workload of climateprediction and einstein.

Thank you good folks for making a new comer here feel welcome and a part of an intelligent extended family.

Just my 2¢ worth

I would like to first ask how many of you leave your computers running to crunch as much CPDN as possible?

Secondly, do you know where the electricity that your computer(s) uses to crunch comes from (or that delivers electricity to your electricity outlet comes from)?

Thirdly, have you ever considered that leaving your computer on to crunch CPDN data is a contradiction?

The reason I’m thinking this is because in many countries fossil fuel is used to generate energy and this is one of the main reasons we have global warming today. So ask your selves next time you leave your computer on to do some crunching: Why do I participate? If the reason is to get at better understanding of global warming and maybe find a solution, then turn your computer of when you are finished using it. It will be a contradiction to leave it on just to crunch data.

I have 5 systems here. Mine x2 64 4800+, the wife\'s x64 3700+, and the server XP2200+. All 3 of these systems stay on 24/7 for a number of reasons. Back in the old days it was better to leave your systems on all the time to prevent the stress of starting up, heat/contraction of the cards in the slots, etc. However, over time I have been involved in a number of projects. Currently I\'ve devoted my system to ClimatePrediction, the wife\'s to einstein, and the server to Seti. For the difference in my usage of power I think I outweight all the potential problems of using the resources. Rather than waste them , I feel its going to good use for scientific endoeavors. So much more to gain from that than playing games and running them now stop.
I have 2 other boxes which aren\'t hooked up present. One is my son\'s XP2400+ that just got home for the summer from College and the other is a box in a jerky state of being rebuilt for a friend to replace his aging PIII 550e. Neither of those 2 boxes are online and therefore not wasting energy. If it were possible to have enough outlets, I\'d probably fire up my son\'s computer so it could work on ClimatePrediction so that in the run we might have answers to this so called global warming scare.

Just my 2 ¢ worth..
Arion
