1) Questions and Answers : Unix/Linux : Show Graphics button gives no response (Message 24053)

If memory serves, there have been issues with Gentoo. A Board \'search\' should indicate troubles other Gentoo users have had with CPDN.

No major problem here with Gentoo 2006.0 (~x86). Take care if you have Xorg 7.1 installed in your box. The latest release of xorg-server is really a little crap with some video cards when DRI is enabled (leading to problems for applications that depends on OpenGL to run).

With Xorg 7.0 & boinc 5.5.13, it \"just works\".

P.S. sulphur_glx* is for the old SULPHUR experiment. Unless you are running an old WU, you don\'t have it in your box.

No problem until now with Boinc 5.4.3, CPDN (sulphur_cycle 4.22) WU & WCG (rosetta 4.21) WUs.

Frequent backups are a must!

daily backups and internet disabled is a must for 4.22 :)

I keep 3 days of backups to be sure 100% :)

it\'s a challenge for me to finish this workunit :)

i managed to finish the first phase :) i don\'t know who has done more work, the cpu or I with the backups ;)

It seems that some lucky bastards don\'t need to do extra work ... I do backups only once a month - just before steping up to next phase! Until now, no problem at all with Sulphur 4.22 & Boinc 5.3.x under Linux (& yes, connected to the Internet 24/7).

8.42 s/TS ...

Not bad, I\'m doing 8.17 s/TS (but, 0.75%/day) with my Intel 1.6 GHz processor ;-) If you want to finish on time (not critical for this project - you will get your goodies anyway), consider to run only CPDN on this computer.

Happy crunching !!!
5) Message boards : Number crunching : Sulphur model phase 3 unchanged since phase 2 (Message 19487)
Posted 21 Jan 2006 by belgix
Post:
From what I understand the first 3 phases in sulphur should have about the same reaction as a normal slab, with increased CO2 in phase 3 usually leading to increased temperature. Is that correct? Is this then a faulty work unit? Should I abort the model?

Depending of initial WU\'s parameters, the computed values for temperatures & precipitations may very much or less. Take a look at this graph. If analysis of the data gives a slight increase of 2 to 3 degrees Celsius when CO2 increase, some returned results get a lot warmer than the \'expected\' average, whilst others cool.

I don\'t think you have a faulty WU and your WU is probably more interesting to CPDN scientists than a \'normal & more than usual\' WU. So, please don\'t abort your model.
6) Questions and Answers : Windows : Unrecoverable Error (Message 19462)
Posted 20 Jan 2006 by belgix
Post:
From error_numbers.h,

#define ERR_NOT_FOUND -161

You can also take a look at the file yabsd.out (in the dataout folder of your WU), there should be an error message, or description, at the bottom of the file.
7) Questions and Answers : Unix/Linux : process exited with code 26 (Message 19440)

AFAIK this error is not in the range of those given to BOINC client, so if you look in the file yabsd.out (in the dataout folder of your WU), there should be an error message, or description, at the bottom of the file. This will tell you, what happened.

Til now, I\'m lucky ... no worries with my WU. I have SuSE 10 installed on my laptop.

It\'s not normal but after a quick investigation of your failing WUs you seems to have the same problem (error code -161) discussed in this thread.

When I\'m trying to edit my climatepredisction.net preference here. I receive the following message from the server

Warning: mysql_pconnect() [function.mysql-pconnect]: Too many connections in /websites/boinc/projects/cpdnboinc/html/inc/db.inc on line 16
Unable to connect to database - please try again later Error: 1040Too many connections

Pretty strange because I can edit my general preferences and my Forum preferences w/o any problem.

I agree with Les and if you don\'t want to lose SETI\' WU you can (in Boinc Manager) stop to get new work from SETI. Nevermind, I doubt you will not finish before deadline because you have 11 months to finish your CPDN WU (and I will probably take 4-6 months with your computer to finish one). The estimated completion time is probably over-estimated as well (around 2x for my laptop).

Carl,

Something weird occured with your last credit calculation. I lost 35,000 credits yesterday and I don't think 13,000 credits for 1 year of crunching 24/7 with a P4-1.6G are realistic.

Greets..

Do you have problem with other projects? Last year, I had the same problem with my Toshiba laptop and I fixed this issue with a redesign of my CPU heatsink.

Also, take a look at this thread.
16) Questions and Answers : Unix/Linux : BOINC 4.43 and CPDN (Message 13539)
Posted 18 Jun 2005 by belgix
Post:
I'm running Boinc 4.43 since few weeks w/o any problem. The only issue I noticed is the wrong value of the progress status. For CPDN, the progress status indicates the progress in the current phase.

Side Effect 1 : The completion time is always over estimated when you are running phase 2 or 3 (especially true a the beginning of a new phase).

Side Effect 2 : The first side effect leads often to a wrong over-committed condition in the scheduler. If you run multiple projects, it's a problem because you would not receive WUs from other projects as is should.

So, if CPDN is your main project you can install and run BOINC 4.43 on your computer elsewhere wait for next release.

I never said you get overheating problems with your computer but if you take a look at your last 10 trickles sent (failure only),

http://climateapps2.oucs.ox.ac.uk/cpdnboinc/result.php?resultid=867423

It's quite strange that all those WU had ended with "Downloading" error and the BOINC core client version is 4.13. Climateprediction.net recommends using Boinc 4.19.

With the little info that you give to us, you seems to have a problem with your internet connection but I also noticed you are still running BOINC 4.13.

Upgrade your BOINC software to version 4.19 or 4.43 and reset your climateprediction.net account because you might have some data corruption in your client_state.xml file. Unless you have some older WU (which it's a non-sense for me if your computer crash often), BOINC should download hadsm3_4.13_windows_intelx86.exe not hadsm3_4.12_windows_intelx86.exe.

20) Questions and Answers : Unix/Linux : Show graphics; stopping and starting (Message 13137)
Posted 5 Jun 2005 by belgix
Post:
Boinc 4.43 for Linux is still in development and even if this version seems fairly stable you may expect to find some bugs. I had already found those ones ...

1) Graphic functions do not works at all (but if you really want to watch visualisation, run hadsm3viz_4.13_i686-pc-linux-gnu appl. in your BOINC/projects/climateprediction.net directory)
2) Web sites button does not works at all. I'm only having/using Konqueror.
3) The menus do not hide if you click outside the displayed box.
4) Because fonts are too big, I cannot see the entire contents of the HTTP & SOCKS Proxies menus. Not an issue for me because my setup doesn't require using it.
5) The progress status indicates progress done in the phase being processed.

Don't worry to close BOINC manager at any time. Under 4.43, client and manager apps run independently & after a month, I didn't lost any WU.
