1) Questions and Answers : Unix/Linux : platform 'i586-mandriva-linux-gnu' not found (Message 36943)

Grrrr. Stupid Mandriva packagers.

They're compiling it wrong. So the server is saying "Hey, I don't have a app for that platform. Now if you were asking for i686-pc-linux-gnu, we'd be all set."

Here's what I'd do if I were you. I'd run down all the work on your machine, if there is any. Uninstall BOINC using the package manager. Grab BOINC from here. Follow the instructions here to install.

And if you really want to help, file a bug against the package. Point the packager to this Wiki page and tell them to make note of the configure command.

I believe there are other ways around this (using the anonymous platform method) but that seems like a pain to me.

Will do that. I think I need to look at a lot more than error codes because I could never pass an exam on this stuff.

What makes you think we could? :)

You taught me a lot Paul (even if you don\'t know it). But I don\'t think I could pass a test either :-)

I need Google and all the resources out there.
3) Message boards : Number crunching : Shutting down Vista and BOINC with CPDN running. (Message 31662)

Ray

The simplest solution is for your wife not to run CPDN because it only happens to CPDN. I found that SETI, Rosetta & WCG all close down in time, for example

It doesn\'t ONLY happen to CPDN. I lost a QMC and a Predictor work unit in the Vista shutdown. I believe I\'ve also lost a Cosmology work unit at some point in time due to the Vista shut down.

It just hurts a lot more to lose thousands of hours of work, which is why good backups help. Heck, it hurt to lose those 80 combined hours from QMC and Predictor.

Ray. Make sure you\'ve got BOINC somewhere besides the default c:\\program files directory. I use c:\\boinc.

The shutdown thing is hit and miss. I just brought a new computer online running Vista (don\'t ask me how badly I want to put something else on there) and in my blind clicking (whole interface is in Korean and no way to change it) after running the updates the computer rebooted. I didn\'t lose any work. Now I\'ve had the same thing happen in the past (dumb dialog box stole focus as I was typing) and the computer rebooted. I lost nearly 80 hours of work in that reboot.

Hmmmmmmmmm... maybe it has something to do with the amount of work put in. LOL. The more work you\'ve put in, the more likely the result is to get trashed.

[edit]Gah... edited to make the slashes go the correct way. My muscles are now trained to put the other ones like I use in the Linux shell.[/edit]

is the formula behind the number in the public domain?

Yup.

http://krijnen.com/time.php

That page should do it for you.

If it\'s 3:30 AM (I\'m assuming it is) then the Unix time stamp works out to be 1344411015.

There is/was an option in BOINC to \"Interact with the desktop\", which allowed for graphics.
I think this had to be selected at install, and it may also not be there now.
...

It has to be done manually. Instructions are here.

Yeah. Detaching should get rid of all that stuff. BOINC keeps it around in case you would start a new model of the same type. That way everyone saves bandwidth by not downloading the files again.

The page just might be cached server side. Check back now and see if it\'s changed.

If not, you can just unjoin the team and start a new one. This is simplest if you\'re the only person on the team. If there\'s more than just you, and people want to follow, they need to do unjoin the old one and join the new one.

CPDN is different from other BOINC projects in that your credits WILL follow you from team to team.

Is it all projects or just CPDN?

If it\'s all of them, you\'re better off posting this over on the BOINC forums.

If one of the volunteers familiar with Macs doesn\'t pick up the post in a few days, I can email Charlie Fenton directly.

Please post as many details as you can.

Could you try adding the BOINC directory to the trusted zone in Kaspersky?

What version of Kaspersky is it?

I\'m using KIS 6.0.1.411 (from memory - could have some of those numbers wrong) and haven\'t had a problem with it.

Yeah. I have BOINC installed in c:\\boinc rather than c:\\program files\\boinc and have not had any major trouble with it.

I also turned off automatic updates. It prompts me for download and then I do it manually. I\'ve had my XP box set up like that since I got it and I\'m more comfortable with it that way.

It\'s also worth noting that deadlines aren\'t enforced here. As long as you keep trickling, your model will be considered active even if it goes over the deadline.

I want to say that you need a trickle every 6 weeks to be considered active, but I could be wrong.

Yesterday I suspended the projects and put a stop on accepting new work because of of the weather conditions. T storms can cause major damage where I live so I shut down when these events come up. This morning I dropped the firewall, enabled the projects, and let climatepred accept some work. No checksum errors! Enabled the firewall and started getting errors. So the firewall IS causing the problem. Now I just need to know what else I have to set in its rules besides execute permissions for BOINC exe programs.

Again, any other thoughts on this would be appreciated. I have looked in the firewall log and most connections were allowed in the time period. The few that were blocked look like they should be blocked but I\'ll studying the log further as I get the chance.

At least now I know of one way to get more work for the project. Progress..

Here you go

80 (http for server communication)
443 (https for server communication)
31416 (loopback address for manager - client communication)

BOINC.exe needs 31416 and 80 and 443 opened
BOINCmgr.exe needs 31416 opened
BOINC.scr needs 31416 opened

Well done Kathryn - the \'job satisfaction\' on completing a cpdn model is a bit more intense than on other boinc projects, don\'t you think?

BTW, just in case you missed the news, all beta models whether complete or not should now be zapped and replaced with standard versions.

Oh man. Yeah. What a good feeling when they finish.

And yes, I killed that beta model when they released the new version into the wild.

Too bad that\'s the end of my CPDN career until I get a desktop (which won\'t happen any time soon). My brother was kind enough to let me BOINC on his computer while he was living with us doing his college co-op.

But a nice end nevertheless.

Finished my second CPDN model. That makes 2 CPDN, 1 SAP and the better part of a CPDN beta... and all without a crash.

Time to delete those backups off the network drive!

You can also use a <some_name_i_canna_remember>.xml file in your BOINC dir to specify options pertaining to error reports, documented at Berkeley.

:)

That would be cc_config.xml
