1) Questions and Answers : Macintosh : G5 Excessive Processor Use (Message 16502)

1. Changes to preferences only apply after the project has been updated. Select PROJECTS tab, select Climate Prediction and hit the Update button.

2. If you are running multiple projects, change your CPU preference on all.

3. Have you changed the preferences for one location (HOME) but your Mac is in another location (say, WORK)?
Check your CPDN profile.

It is not the credit. I have two computers with 0 credit but I can't delete them. It may be that if a computer has a job in progress it cannot be deleted.

3) Message boards : Number crunching : is it possible to use a cpu less than 800mhz (Message 15014)

I was running dual 700MHz Pentium III (Coppermine 256kB cache) under XP Pro SP2 until I found two x 1GHz CPUs at a 2nd hand shop for cheap.
At 700MHz I completed two WU in about 117 days. You should expect better performance from the bigger cache the Xeons have.
On a laptop running Pentium 4 - M 2.26GHz XP Home SP2, one WU in about 36 days.
I also had a 233 Pentium II Win2000 running at 262MHz, but it was going to be running forever to finish one WU so its crunching seti instead.

You might try a BOINC client that is optimised for Xeon CPUs, though these are mostly Linux clients. Climate Prediction doesn't have an optimised client though many other BOINC projects do. There are some excellent guides to other clients on other BOINC fora. Chances are someone has been able to tweak more performence from a similar box to yours.

4) Message boards : Number crunching : Schduler pulls two WUs to achieve 33.33% of Intel HT? (Message 12192)

On my dual CPU PC, BOINC likes to change from one project to the other at regular intervals. It runs 2 work units of CPDN while S@H is paused and then swaps every hour.
I changed the resource share on CPDN to 500 (83.3%) because the WU are much longer than SETI. The projects switch every hour for part of the day. The extra share that CPDN asks is delivered as a longer period during the day without project switching.
I can suspend one work unit, which will start a work unit from the other project.

I suspect that a HT would prefer to run two work units of the same project. This is, if a HT CPU could run two project as two threads? Running two different projects might mean that the CPU cache could not store sufficient data/program and would result in slower performance.

Interesting to see if the new dual core with HT will run successfully on 4 work units!
5) Questions and Answers : Windows : WU finished, but restarting! BOINC 4.32 (Message 11874)

Yes, I have three WU: 1 "Completed" but running, 1 running, 1 ready.

re: stats... I went from 23000 credits with RAC 190(see signature) to 33598.69 w/ RAC 1202.55 according to BOINC Manager and CPDN website! Looks like a correction is on its way.

UPDATE 22:45 Canberra EST: The backup worked. I was able to complete the WU and upload it.
I then upgraded (actually, it was a repair) to 4.32 and the two WU that had been downloaded picked up from where they had just stopped.

I suspect that the client hung just at the point of the upload and corrupted the result.

Update 22:51: Boo-hoo. My stats dropped to 23591.57. Somehow, my dual CPU PC appears twice and I received 10,277 credit on 16 April 2005. That's going to difficult to explain, aside the 283, 95 and 187. :)

Lesson learned: Backup at least your projects before an upgrade.
6) Questions and Answers : Windows : WU finished, but restarting! BOINC 4.32 (Message 11872)

I have a dual CPU PC running 100% CP. I had two WU that were just about to finish. I let one finish using BOINC 4.25. This WU was uploaded and creditted.
Then I backed-up the entire BOINC directory and installed BOINC 4.32.

The second WU was due to finish in about 30 minutes. I returned 2 hours later to see that it had status of "Running", progress of 100.00% and to completion of "---.--". Strangely, the CPU time kept incrementing, as if it was doing work. Task Manager confirmed that the WU was consuming CPU as if it were running.

I tried to update the project, but nothing was sent.

I exitted BOINC Manager, waited a bit and restarted BOINC. Now it is reporting that progress on the WU is ZERO and that it will be completed in a few months time!!!

Can I upload the result file somewhere (and get the big credit?)
Should I restore the backup and run from there, or will this trigger an error at the scheduler that locks the WU?
