1) Questions and Answers : Wish list : more info on our models (Message 31406)

Hi, everyone. As long as you are asking for our wish list, here mine. I would like to see a screen that keep track of the CO2 and other environmental variables and the average temp of the Earth in our models. It would be nice if it also kept a running tally of how much thes conditions have changed since the model began.

Two of the three models that have crashed in that work unit never got started; the third crashed with a problem with the PC. So there\'s every chance that the model you\'re running will complete successfully.

Things do sometimes happen on the PC that cause the model to crash, so it\'s a good idea to take a backup from time to time. There is a description of how to do that in this post.

Best of luck.

Frequent backups really do pay off. I learned this the hard way. Before I got into the habit of making daily backups I lost several models in various states of completion. Before I saw the light (about making frequent backups) I never got beyond 30% or 40%. My models still crash, but, now I just restore and go on. I had to do a restore just yesterday. Somehow my model got crashed while I was installing an update from Microsoft. I don’t know why, I had exited before I started, but, after the restart the model was crashed. A simple restore turned a potential disaster in a minor glitch. All I lost was 20 hours of CPU time. My model is now at 87.5% and crunching happily.

I believe that both London and New York are at risk from sea level rise. Am I right in thinking that parts of the NY subway already flood sometimes?

Hi, this is Jim.

Yes the Subways have flooded twice in the last 4 months, but, that seem to be due mostly to poor drainage system in the tunnels during heavy rain. But you are right about New York City and Long Island being very vulnerable to sea level rise. A rise of only 3 feet would flood parts of lower Manhattan. The South Shore of Long Island is also vulnerable. Sea level rise will greatly increase the pace of storm erosion. My house should be safe enough for as long as I need it. According to Google Earth it is 131 feet above sea level.

Yesterday I saw one of my models reach my 100th birthday - more likely to be celebrated in my absence by my children as the 100th anniversary of my birth. Exactly the same thoughts and intimations of mortality crossed my mind, but I can\'t say it makes me feel depressed. It does help to place our lifespan and what we do during it within a wider historical context. The whole-world graphics perhaps also help us take a global view of what\'s happening instead of being limited to a local or national perspective.

Hi, this is Jim. I do try to keep a global perspective on this issue. I hope that on the 100 anniversary of my birth the World will be a better (or at least not a worse) place. I have been an environmentalist since the first Earth Day back in the 1970s. One of the reasons that I am taking part in the Climateprediction project is the hope that in some very small way I can help stop the ruinous change in our climate. I live on Long Island, only seven miles from the ocean. It would be best if our decedents didn’t have to live in coastal cities surrounded by levees. The people of New Orleans learned the hard way the consequences of living in a city that is below sea level.

I realize this isn\'t really important, but, I was just wondering if anyone else feels the way I do. My model just reached 2050. As I was looking at the date, I realized that I probably won’t live to see that day. I was born in 1950. In 2050 I will be 100 years old. I certainly won’t live to see 2080. I supposed that some of the younger people running the model can confidently expect to live to see 2080, but, I won’t. It makes me feel a little depressed. Does it make anyone else out there feel the same?
6) Questions and Answers : Windows : Model resets when restarting on Vista (Message 30966)
Posted 15 Oct 2007 by old_user195056
Post:
I have identified part of the cause of my reset problem. If I shut down or restart Vista without exiting BOINC first, it resets to zero with a new model name. However, if I exit first it carries on where it left off on the next startup. I have restarted many times without a problem, reaching 18% completion, but today forgot to exit befor shutting down and it has now started a new model at 0%. This is very frustrating, but I have not seen any other similar queries. Could there be a permanent fix to this error?

Dear Andrew:

I have been running the model on Vista since last May.(79% complete this morening)I don’t know why you loose the model every time you shutdown without exiting. My model usually survives a running shutdown. Maybe your computer shuts down faster than mine. Mine seems to take forever sometimes.
The solution to your problem is simple.

First, click “No New Tasks” so that you do not keep getting new WUs every time that you forget to exit before rebooting.

Second, make very frequent backups. I make one every 0.5%. I know this may sound extreme, but, it works. Once you do it a few times it becomes second nature and you can do it in your sleep. Whenever you forget to exit you can just restore from the backup. It only takes a couple of minutes. I know I have done it a least a dozen times. Hope this helps.

Hi,
No proxy,I am connected with a hi-speed line to the local phone/service provider.
I have a Linksys DI-704UP router connected to the hi-speed modem.
I saw something about the climateprediction address, 163.1.13.17, and can ping that.
I regularly reboot my computer etc. and just logged into my linksys and did a reboot. I have the latest Firmware from 2005...
No difference...

I run Vista Home Premium and its firewall/defender. Actually, I have to give permission for Boinc to run every time I boot up as Vista blocks it. I have to look into how to avoid that step.

Cheers,

Per

Hi. I’m running Vista Home Premium also. If you are really serious about fixing it so that you don’t need to OK boinc after every reboot then turn off “User Account Control.” Be aware that this will make it more likely that a virus or other rogue program can download and setup on your machine.

I suspect that you\'ve signed up twice, and are now crunching under a different user account to the one from which you\'re posting.
\"PUDDIN TAME\" perhaps? Although BOINCstats says that this account name isn\'t currently getting credits.

Hi Les, this is Jim, aka, PUDDIN TAME. The problem my be that I am registered twice. Could it have anything to do with the fact that I was running XP when I downloaded the WU, but have since upgraded to Vista?
Is it really that important as long as the program is running normally and sending trickles. My most recent trickle message is displayed below:

6/14/2007 3:49:19 AM|climateprediction.net|Sending scheduler request: To send trickle-up message
6/14/2007 3:49:19 AM|climateprediction.net|(not requesting new work or reporting completed tasks)
6/14/2007 3:49:24 AM|climateprediction.net|Scheduler RPC succeeded [server version 509]

I don’t really care about the credits as long as the model will upload the results properly at the end.

I am running the HadCM3 coupled model experiement 5.15. The program sends a trikles every dec. 4 and the server acknowledges the messages.

Hi, everyone. I don’t know if this is the right place to post this but here it is. A few weeks ago I joined team USA. For some reason my name and stats never appeared on the team webpage. With an RAC of 203 I should be somewhere around 60th place. I know that it’s the climate science not the standings and RACs are truly important, but, I do like to see how high I can get using only a lower end laptop. I tried resigning and joining again, but no joy.

Hi, everyone. I was wondering if there is any way to return an unneeded WU. I accidentally downloaded a second climateprediction WU due to a model crash. The manager automatically downloaded a replacement for the crashed unit. (I forgot to click “no new tasks.”)

The problem is that I didn’t need the new WU because I had a backup copy for the first WU and was able to restore it. I now have the second WU stored as a backup copy. Is there some way that I can return it so that someone else can run it? If I restored it and then aborted it would BOINC then give it to someone else?

I ask because at the rate the work is going the first WU won’t be finished for 4 or 5 months yet.

If your computer is running short of memory under Vista you might want to try the ready boost feature contained in Vista.

My laptop has 1 GB of Ram installed. When I installed Vista Home Premium I noticed that my computer was slower to open things than under XP and was falling back on virtual memory. I added a 4GB flash drive and it solved the problem. The speed is back up and Vista is no longer thrashing the HD. It even seems to be running climateprediction faster than XP. Hope this helps

19) Message boards : Cafe CPDN : backups (Message 25594)
Posted 14 Dec 2006 by old_user195056
Post:
Hi, everyone.

I was just making a backup for the BBC climate prediction model. I began wondering about the boinc/climateprediction program. There are 67 files and folders. Each backup consumes 1.87GB of hard drive space. That’s on top of the 1.87GB being used by the model that is actually running.

Ever since I have been wondering if anyone out there understands if it is necessary to make a new copy of all of these folders and files each time. Do all of them change as the model progresses, or only some.

I assume that the loose files are the calculating machinery of the model, while the folders store the results of the calculations. If only a few of them change with time then it might be possible to burn the non-changing ones onto a DVD and only make copies of the parts of the program that change over time.

When I compared the folders from 2 backups (6.5% complete and 8.5%) I found that the “projects” and “slots” folders increased in size while the other 4 folders stayed the same. The “Projects” folder at 1.17% is enormous. If it was possible to identify which files changed as the model runs and which remain the same then it would be possible to make serial copies of only the files that change The unchanging files could be stored on a DVD freeing up hard drive space. If a restore is ever needed, the changing files could be plugged in to the DVD copy of the unchanging files and reinstalled. This would be possible to save a lot of hard drive space.

Ok, this is probably a ridiculous idea, but, it seems like it could work. If anyone out there knows why it couldn’t work please tell me.
