21) Message boards : Number crunching : Credits accruing but no trickles sent???? (Message 41364)

I noticed a few trickle update pending messages a few days ago and then finished tasks stopped uploading. The cause is a crashed upload server (power outage). Things tend to behave strangely when they are not working properly.

I checked my pending credit and it suggests quite a lot of work to add to the tally,

From the list of apps/models/experiments on offer (below), is there a definitive (or even rough) answer as to which tasks get the most credit (run the fastest/do the most) on which systems?

UK Met Office HadSM3 Slab Model
UK Met Office HadCM3 Coupled Model Experiment
UK Met Office HadAM3
UK Met Office HadSM3 Mid-Holocene
UK Met Office HadAM3P
UK Met Office FAMOUS
UK Met Office HadAM3P European Region
UK Met Office HadAM3P Southern Africa
UK Met Office HadAM3P Pacific North West

For example, which task would run the fastest on an Phenom CPU, which on a IC2Duo and which on an i7?

Also, which operating system is the fastest (while being stable)?
XP x64, XP x86, Vista/W7 (x64/x86), Linux (x64/x86).

The reason I ask is that I would like to configure my i7 system for maximum throughput (optimization) if possible. I would be happy to install the fastest operating system and run the fastest tasks for my CPU.

Thanks,

Folding @ Home also runs CUDA programs using NVIDIA Cards, and a similar program using ATI cards.

http://folding.stanford.edu/English/DownloadWinOther

Note you will need to have the drivers installed first!

For NVIDIA Cards, make sure you have an up to date driver and Cuda program installed.

I have not used an ATI card, but it works just as well.

Again, the other programs are GPUGRID, Aqua, and the pointless SETI.
The Milkyway also do an ATI project and may one day finally even manage to get an NVidia effort up and running. Presently just begining the Alpha.

I was just asking for help in contributing to the project. I thought this was a help forum.

\"The answer is the same as for the previous poster\". Does this mean that you cant be bothered thinking about it or telling me the answer?

\"leave BOINC to get on with it and it will\". Get on with not doing what I want it too in the same way it has been doing. Why would I want to do that?

\"it takes time for BOINC to work things out each time\". What? It\'s a computer program! Thats what it does.

If thats your effort at help I\'ll work it out myself.

The answer is the same as for the previous poster - leave BOINC to get on with it and it will.
If you keep changing things yourself, BOINC has to keep re-adjusting it\'s schedule to try and meet your new requirements. And it takes time for BOINC to work things out each time.
Each time you add a new project, BOINC has to re-adjust.

Try setting all of your projects to the same amount of Resource share to start with, until BOINC switchs between them regularly, then change 1 or 2 if needed.

I have the opposite problem to this user:

I want climate predictor to run all the time on 1 core of my quad systems, but it does not run at all! This is because the other projects are cheating with the time settings - I sence an interproject quabble here. CPDN sets the deadline to about a year in the future, while the other projects I am connected to set theirs to a few days (often 2 or 3 days). As a result they are always in the \"Running High Priority\" Status, and CPDN does not get a look in as the next one goes straight to that status and these projects keep picking up more work.

Malariacontrol seems to be the worst offender, but Tanpaku, Boincsimap and World Community Grid also do this.

HOW Can I Adapt the Settings so that CPDN actually runs once and a while???

Thank you,

Whenever Climate Predictor start to run, it prevent ANY other projects from running. It always run as \"High priority\". It completely ignore any resources sharing preferences.

Is there a way to enforce the resources sharing AS I set it?

If left unchecked, Climate Predictor will run for months on end, without ever stoping to let any other project any chance to run.
I need to manualy suspend Climate Predictor if I want other projects to do any work.

26) Questions and Answers : Windows : How do I set BOINC to use both CPU cores for climate prediction? (Message 26732)

It\'s not possible to run one model on both processors.
[/quote]

How then can I use both cores when I run Rosetta, Tanpaku or similar project calculations?

I want to use both CPU cores for climate prediction on my Pentium 945 (dual core). It only uses 50% of CPU power at present, and will take 93 days to run a project, at 24h per day.
I will probably upgrade the system between now and then. So if I cant set this up to work flat out there is no point starting, I will just do one of the other projects like rosetta (all my other systems use 100% CPU, and all are dual core). I dont know whats up with this project?
Any suggestions on how to get the CPU use to 100% of both CPU cores?

I am participating in the BBC Climate change experiment, running BOINC Manager 5.4.9.
The estimated time it will take to do one set of calculations on my fastest machine is nearly 3 months, and about 5 on my slowest machine.

Wise up and break the calculations down into realistic sizes, so that more people will actually finish the calculations.

3 to 4 months is a ridiculous time to spend on a single calculation.

I guess that half to about 80% of people would be put off by this and not even start (or drop out quickly).
The chances are that about 10% of people will have a serious software problem in that time and have to reinstall, losing all data.
Probably the same proportion of people will change their machine, and many will just give up on it.

All in, I would guess that you are excluding 85% of would be participants.

I would suggest performing a calculation that takes about a week on a standard computer would do.

Are you getting any data on the effects of running processors at 100% for extended periods?
How many processors fail (indirectly because of fan failures, or just burn out)? What effect does the extra heat have on the Mean Times To Failure for the other components? How much is spent cooling the office? Is the process actually contributing more to global warming, than slowing or stopping it?

Big questions for a big project!
Worth discussing I hope.
