6) Message boards : Number crunching : seti project renamed as climate prediction (Message 10259) Posted 2 Mar 2005 by old_user156 Post: Try a manual update on the renamed projects under the 'projects' tab of the BOINC GUI - when this particular problem was rife with an older version of BOINC, that action fixed the problem for at least one user AFAICR.

Edit2: I wonder how that host managed to download over 20 models on 20th February..? I thought there was a 'four-a-day' maximum..?

(Message 9537) Posted 19 Feb 2005 by old_user156 Post: This is now a little irritating - it would be really nice to be able to at least 'hide' machines that are no longer running. Eg. Only 8 machines, ie. 1, 2, 3, 7, 11, 14, 15 & 16 are still running out of <a href="http://climateapps2.oucs.ox.ac.uk/cpdnboinc/hosts_user.php?userid=156">my list of 20 computers</a>. Automaticaly hide any machine if it hasn't trickled for two weeks would be good IMO...

Heh, my 20 results/day estimate from Nocona Xeon duallies 'Caroline Nova' & 'Oony Nova' is a serious <i>under</i> estimate - they're both producing more like <b>34</b> results/day. (running the 'classic' v3.03 CLI client.) NB: That 34 results/day is close approaching <i>three times</i> Emma's output of 12 results/day - thus Oony Nova (320Watts draw => 0.226kWh/result.) <i>beats</i> Emma's (128Watts draw => 0.256kWh/result.) energy efficiency - maybe CP-boinc needs to speed up the output from Intel CPUs even more somehow or other - 'Oony Nova' only produces roughly double 'Emma's' CP-boinc output whether she's running two or four models with HT enabled - two fast CPUs both chasing after the same memory bus and disk access I suppose... Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrrggggggghhhhhhh - go away Olga..!!!

Oh well, I can't compete with a university full of computers. ;-) I reckon I've completed <i>roughly</i> 180 models altogether now - the displayed classic CPDN total of 101 is incorrect by a fair number due to manual uploads - a manual count of the CP-boinc models I have completed now stands at 59... +++ Heh, 'more than 99.91% of all users'. :-D With the current 'number of users' and 'number of hosts trickling' it looks as though you can hit a fairly high 'percentage of all users' by trickling just <i>once</i> - same as at Classic SETI actually, lots of folks sign up & download the software but never manage to complete a single work unit.

'Emma' <i>is</i> a bit 'previous generation' now but she's been dedicated to CP-boinc since it's inception. Methinks AMD XPs must lose out more than I originally thought running CP-boinc instead of classic CPDN... (Oh well, at least she's only munching 128Watts whilst she's crunching models, unlike my new Nocona Xeon duallies which are munching 320+Watts each........)

(I do wish they'd clean up the directory structure a bit though - all those extra language folders are plain irritating; 'projects' and 'slots' are the only two sub-directories <i>required</i> for BOINC to run.)

I saw a Japanese weather bureau movie made from satellite data over a few months and some of the typhoons came rather close to circling back around through the tropics in that particular season - I don't have a URL I'm afraid...

I've seen many models that cooled in control phase 2 but then were relatively stable after warming in phase 3. So, <i>is</i> there any effect that would cause 'runaway feedback' warming in certain areas of the world during phase 3 that wouldn't show up at all in control phase 2..?
19) Message boards : Number crunching : Merging "unmergable" hosts (Message 7970) Posted 28 Jan 2005 by old_user156 Post: Carl Christensen effectively fixed a similar problem with Classic CPDN by allowing selective 'hiding' of hosts that folks no longer wanted to see in their stats - a similar function in BOINC's 'Your Account / My computers' page would be rather nice to have; I use that page to check on which computers are still running efficiently and <a href="http://climateapps2.oucs.ox.ac.uk/cpdnboinc/hosts_user.php?userid=156">it's gotten rather confused</a> with all the changes I've made recently - I only have 8 machines online at the moment but <i>18</i> are listed. :-( I already have quite a few 'unmergeable' machines (eg. host 61912 & host 61968 which are exactly the same machine except 61968 has SP2...) and doubtless I will end up with even more during the switch to BOINC v4.19 although 'Alison' (Host 42174) <i>has</i> transitioned her processor name change okay. :-)
20) Message boards : Number crunching : BOINC 4.19 (Message 7967) Posted 28 Jan 2005 by old_user156 Post: "AuthenticAMD Unknown CPU Typ" instead of "Unknown CPU Type Pentium" which is a definite improvement but not quite there as yet. To be fair even the BIOS of my desktop boards doesn't recognise XP-M CPUs, CPU-Z v1.26 manages to read it correctly somewhere though; "Processor Name: AMD Athlon XP-M" (Although that may be a 'cheat' conversion from "unknown CPU typ", I dunno. )
