Maybe it would be a good idea to send out mails to the members of Mac-related teams, as probably only few people still check back at this place? I think the founder of each team is able to access the required mail addresses. And I think the users have the possibility to decide, whether to receive mails regarding the project. So no harm is done to anybody not willing to be bother by this project.

Thanks for your detailed explanation of the energy market in the UK. What I do not understand is, why only few people in Britain actually do switch to green energy then? If the companies cannot reject you as a green customer and the price is the same as for "normal" electricity, there is only benefit for you. What would happen if there are more people trying to switch to green energy than there is supply? Would the companies simply "adjust" the prices for their green customers or would this result in an increase of the general prices as well, with all people paying more?

It all sounds like the British government is regulating the market and there is no real competition, which I would have thought is typical German or French. ;-) Strange world that is!

You are absolutely right! The electricity gets mixed up in a kind of huge "sea". And you are right in thinking that you get the same electrons as your neighbour. But as more and more people decide to go for green energy the mixture in that sea gets greener as well. The problems is, as you mentioned, that a few people could end up paying for new green projects. To prevent this in Germany everybody who is producing green energy (be it water, wind or solar energy) and feds it into the national grid gets paid a very good price. And the energy companies have to connect you and take your electricity. The money for this is paid by EVERY energy customer in Germany resulting in a small surcharge (0.40 cent/kWh) on electricity.

This sounds very ecological at first, because every single person in Germany is contributing to a switch to green energy. But this means that you run into another problem when you switch to a "green energy only" tariff: You need to check if you do not get sold power, which is already paid for by this surcharge mentioned above. But most of the green companies do play by the rules.

So whatever happens in your country, it is never right. :-/ However, I think I have seen companies in the UK advertising to sell green energy for the same price you get from your "old" supplier. Is there any hidden secret behind these offers??

I switched to a company, which offers electricity from renewable sources, four years ago. In Germany it is possible for everybody to choose the provider of your electricity. It is up to you to go for nuclear power or green energy. My computers crunching for this project are producing nearly no carbon dioxid for a very competitive price [and my fridge, tv, oven, ..., too ;-)]. I was wondering if I am the only one who has done this?!

I think switching to renewable energy for your home is a good way to prove that you really do care about co2-emission. And I know that there are companies selling green energy in the UK as well. How about other countries in Europe and how about the US?

It is always a good idea to keep the file for as long as possible. I know from the pre-boinc time of this project that only a fraction of the results produced are actually send back at the end of the computations. It might be that the people from climateprediction.net consider you model as very interesting and like to take a closer look. Then it would be nice to have the files on your hd. I am not sure whether this is still true. :-/ Sorry!

Hey there!

Good news, this is not a severe problem! No work or credit is lost. It is true that there is no cure at the moment, but this is more a cosmetic problem. Have a look here: http://climateapps2.oucs.ox.ac.uk/cpdnboinc/forum_thread.php?id=1076

Happy predicting!

Hey there,

you should not worry too much about this error. Last November Carl Christensen posted in the thread below that this problem isn't really relevant to this project. No work or credit gets lost. Have a look here: http://climateapps2.oucs.ox.ac.uk/cpdnboinc/forum_thread.php?id=1076

I hope that helps and explains why nobody seems to care to get this fixed.

Bye!

Mmhh, I thought it might be a problem with the permissions, but everything seems to be correct. It really seems to be a problem with 10.2.x. At first glance, I also did not find anyone with OSX 10.2.x currently running the client in the participants lists. Sadly, Carls cpu/timestep table does not provide detailed information about the version of the Darwin being used. Problems discussed in other threads also seem to be linked with problems under 10.2.x. And AFAIK, Carl just has "his" iBook in the "dungeon" and so he does not have the chance to compile for 10.2.x.

Is there anybody running boinc 4.02 on OSX 10.2.x sucessfully??

Hello,

it seems that your chmod-command did not work correctly. You have to fill in a blank space right after the "+x". So the whole command will look like the following (without the quotes):

"chmod +x /Applications/BOINC:CPDN/boinc_4.02_powerpc-apple-darwin"

It worked correctly if you do NOT get ANY message after this command. You will only get your command prompt back. Then you should get the boinc-client working in the way you did:

"./boinc_4.02_powerpc-apple-darwin"

I hope this will solve your problem and we will get another Mac to this nice project. I am not sure whether repair permissions will also help you. If the description above does not cure the problem, could you please do the following command in your boinc directory and tell us what you get.

"ls -l ./boinc_4.02_powerpc-apple-darwin"

It should be something like this (at least this is what I get and the client works for me):

BigMac:~/boinc choklas$ ls -l ./boinc_4.02_powerpc-apple-darwin
-rwxr-xr-x 1 choklas choklas 5832096 5 Aug 11:20 ./boinc_4.02_powerpc-apple-darwin

Hope to hear how it will work out! If it again does not work, I have another idea, but we will see that later. ;-)
10) Questions and Answers : Getting started : How is the client compiled for different platforms? (Message 358)
Posted 7 Aug 2004 by Christian Hoklas
Post:
How is the cpdn client built for the different platforms? Is it compiled from a single source tree, or do you use slightly modified and ported versions for Windows, Mac and Linux. Do you use the same compiler on all platform (maybe gcc)? It is probably not easy to get a fortran app of this size working on three different OSs or compilers.

My iBook G4 / 933 needs 9.53 secs per timestep. This is fairly slow compared to the average speed reported here by pc owners. Maybe there is somebody with a G5 out there, telling us what he/she gets out of the client?! Are there any other mac users out there at all? I am feeling so lonely... :-))

Thanks to the climateprediction.net team for bringing cpdn to my favourite platform. ;-)
