Ed & Harriet Griffith,
This was an issue in the pre-BOINC version. To my knowledge it hasn't happned to anyone with BOINC. However, some people still use the pre-BOINC version, because of BOINC's other anoyances.

Just to clarify for anyone else who might read this, crandles is referring to hadsm3 4.10 not BOINC 4.10.

She might also be interested in how to prevent Classic from downloading another model. It was long ago when I first BOINCed, but I think it was a setting you had to change in your CPDN profile.

How about a bunch of us CPDNers in the States do a group buy to save postage? Order a group of 30 or so, and then distribute to each individual at a more reasonable rate of $6.50.

I like the new W view. It's nice too see the whole surface area of the earth at once. It will be espically useful for posting screenshots on the boards.

Perhaps is started to be a fast iceball, but the model caught it and did a roll back.

I started BOINC&CPDN on another PC and it downloads a hadsm 4.10 model. Is this the new Sulfur cycle? [excited]

This is an older PC; something like a P2, but I don't know the Mhtz. It's running like 10s/Ts! Is this PC simply that slow or are there startup calculations and it will speed up later or is it the additional sulfur calculations?

Info on this is probably around, but searching on the BOINC boards is sooo bad.

I think I remember this problem with early versions of BOINC like 4.05 and ealier. What version are you running?

My files are uploading OK now. (aside from an occasional failure due to volume issues.)
11) Message boards : Number crunching : Is CPDN/BOINC faster with SSE3 on Opteron? (Message 9774)

Post:
This article from Tom's Hardware Guide is about the new Pentiums, but it mentions in passing that the new Opterons have SSE3.
Prescott Reworked: The P4 600 Series and Extreme Edition 3.73 GHz

With our current compile, with the Intel compiler, would it use SSE3 on an Opteron?

I think Intel chips would still have the advantage with hyper threading. But if your really anti-Intel and the heat they produce, could you get a Opteron or multi-Opteron system and get similar results? Not that I could afford such a thing anyway, but hypothetically. . .

Post:
Yes there is an upload issue, but download of new models is unaffected. Fortunately, BOINC handles this well and continues processing new a models, and when the server issue is fixed your completed model will be uploaded automatically.

Some localized oddities are normal in Phase one, but if your model is turning into Titan in Phase one, you may have some hardware instabilities.

The first 15 years are called the spin-up phase because it is calabrating itself before the real experiment begins in phases 2 and 3. Strange weather is normal during the first phase.

17) Message boards : Number crunching : Why doesn\'t BOINC work? (Message 8830)

Post:
If you don't know if you are overclocking, then you aren't. It involves some special steps in your BIOS and can't be done accidentally.

That rebooting is very mysterious. Does it behave similarly with other BOINC projects or other non-BOINC distributed computing?
18) Message boards : Number crunching : Do I have more errors than the average person? (Message 8826)
Posted 7 Feb 2005 by LochDhu
Post:
Are you running the BOINC 4.05 version or were some of the failures on that version? That version had an error in an XML file that causes a failure on model upload. Any work units downloaded with version 4.09 or later will not have this problem.

On the computer that reboots, run MemTest:
http://hcidesign.com/memtest/

If it can't make two complete passes without errors, then that computer isn't fit to run CPDN or any distributed computing project. One of my PCs started crashing, while running CPDN after 5 months of smooth operation. I think and hope I have traced the problem to a power supply that isn't giving the correct voltage.

As for the screen saver, does it not show at all? Just a blank screen? Does it give that "Secure Windows Desktop detected" message? What operating system version?

> It looks like the last trickle of phase 3 was not recorded as uploaded. When
> that happens, the graphs aren't generated.
>
> Has the PC communicated with the server since Jan 31st? It looks like no
> trickles from that host since the last 71st of your model. What happens if
> you restart BOINC on that PC?
>

This is my slowest PC at ~6.6 sec/T. I decided it should switch to smaller work units. I set the "leave at least this much free space" setting to 99GB to prevent another model download. After BOINC uploaded all the files it wanted, I upgraded to 4.19 and attached to Predictor and LHC. It is happily running Predictor and will run LHC when it is back.

Could the leave free space option have prevented a critial file from uploading?

mickus says something about a "follow up trickle." What is this?
