I've got version 7.14.2, surely that's newer then version 6.12.xx mentioned above, so doesn't sound like that particular problem. This has been going on for days now...[/quote]

Primaboinca has a quorum of 1, hence no comparison, but doesn't show pending tasks. I'm not sure how their project admins do it differently from the project admins here. Perhaps they could chat, if they are uncertain, or if we got credits it wouldn't really be that big a deal...

I'm noticing the same problem as all my completed WUs still don't have credit. They were completed weeks ago, so are well past the weekly script run for updating credit. Somehow your script has missed these...

The one thing where this might crop up for some people, depending how far out this goes, is wrt any teams running Formula BOINC

http://formula-boinc.org/

It's still a half year or so away from closing off, but as climate prediction is one of the projects being tallied point wise for the year long challenge, if updates don't come about even as we near the end of the year, this could have an effect on team rankings wrt that. Of course depending how close teams are wrt other projects as well, as if the scoring is far enough apart the 1 to 25 points (depending on a team's ranking) won't make a difference, but if the final scoring comes a few points apart, it might...

Never really had a problem with tasks I've tried to complete on this computer previously, but of late have noticed a few tasks giving error while computing. But the thing is, on further analysis, they seem to be erroring out for several other people as well, some errorig out for 5 separate computers. Units like:

http://climateapps2.oerc.ox.ac.uk/cpdnboinc/workunit.php?wuid=8502145

Only info it gave otherwise was an error status of -529697949 (0xffffffffe06d7363)

then this which errored for 3 other people besides myself, though it's in progress for one last attempt before reaching max number of errors

9) Message boards : Number crunching : Backoff timers, how long is the minimum wait period? (Message 42419)
Posted 14 Jun 2011 by Nuadormrac
Post:
Actually, I did get the error Les Bayles was reporting one would get. But of course that brought up the question on the minimum wait to avoid the "last request too recent error".

Now in my case, the size or number of files has not been an issue, at broadband is involved, not dialup, but well a little explanation would help. I had recently moved, and for various reasons was unable to get Internet hooked straight up at my new place. Things are in the process of being resolved; but during that period was getting online from work. This would be useing the standard ethernet over an organization's external pipe to the Internet.

However, some questions came up about using the Internet for some outside useage between tasks (which have been hours between, with not really much to do). The immediate boss didn't want to say, without getting a final answer from above, so it went to meetings. And then, I was offline, till I could get on elsewhere. Matters have been resolved, the meetings have been had, etc, so I won't be off for the extended periods it was looking, though I'll only be on several hours 5 days a week.

Needless to say, given not every PC one might crunch with will always be online 24/7; this is of course useful info. For instance if one has permission to crunch on their work PC, and even leaving it running over the weekend, if it has to be isolated till Monday morning from Internet access, or whatever might come up, it could help people address their queues for machines that might be cut off for a bit; when physically, they simply won't be able to get the box back on "latter in the day"....

In anycase, thanks for the replies

I have recently moved, and have absolutely no Internet at home (can't even get dialup). As a result I might be in a situation where there could be weeks between the time I can get back on the Internet, and I can't necessarily be up for hours.

As such, far from always on, this box now has to be never (or almost never) on unless/until some stuff gets sorted out. I went to update this project (due to the long WU size and deadlines), but as BOINC was supsended to get on something which was CPU intensive and this laptop doesn't have the compute power to run BOINC and the other stuff, without some computer latency issues, and it got no results. Wanting to rectify this, how long does one have to wait to be able to get work?

There's only a WU for one core, and when I go off, which will have to be soon, I'm likely to not be able to bring this computer back online for a week or more. There simply is no connection I can get ready access to, even at a driving distance, on a regular basis atm. BOINC wants to backoff for hours, but at 11 pm, I can't remain at someone elses house hours past that. It's just, not reasonable when one has to bum off someone elses Internet to get a box on when one's out of service and can't resolve their own Internet possibly within a month or so.

I need some sort of fix to this; especially as I\'m unable to stay online continually anymore. Lets just say that the US job market sucks, as do layoffs; and due to this I\'ve been unable to pay my broadband bill. As such, I\'m on dialup, and can\'t remain online at all times, and those times I\'m on, my phone is also unuseable for calls. If there\'s some sort of remedy to this...

Edit: had to force a retry now, but it finally took. In any case, I\'ve got stuff to do now (actually held off on some stuff), so need to go offline now.

That\'s what I expected; but not what I\'ve seen this time, though it is what I\'ve seen previous times so was expecting to occur again. Based on my seasonal attribution return, it\'s seen that I reported a trickle in this month (hadn\'t with CPDN yet, because I held off all other projects to make sure that reports in, and with a lot of playing World of Warcraft and given how CPU intensive that is, I suspended all CPDN projects while that was playing).

I was, admittedly surprised to see my project folder completely empty when installing 5.8.15 on top of the older version which was probably something like 5.0.x... Also surprised to see the n00b mode on the user interface, but got the old back going to advanced. This said, I hadn\'t gone from a Vista beta install to an OS downgrade (to winXP Pro) on reinstall; but wouldn\'t expect BOINC to care, as it\'s it\'s own system.

Not sure how it happened, as this one is a new one to me, but what was, was. What I\'d like to know is if it\'s possible with the project folders only, to recover these units. It would be good for the project, if the units are recoverable, can be completed...

I\'ve got both a CPDN and a seasonal attribution WU in progress (or at least I had), when I upgraded to the lattest BOINC version from one I downloaded last year. Anyhow, some stuff came up, which left me rather busy to keep up with it, so BOINC was left to itself.

Anyhow a recent format/install (BOINC installed on an external HD which is unaffected by this), and now an update for this, my projects folder itself is completely gone. I have backups (though they aren\'t absolutely current on their place in the WU are present. However copying these over, and getting attached to something would be a first issue.

Had anyone run into the last upgrade wiping their old projects? Perhaps if it was upgraded on a new install where it wasn\'t running before the upgrade?

Are they still using the same file structure, so a simply copying of the backups back in should work?

It would be good if I could resume these, as a fair bit of progress had been made. I\'ve never had an issue in the past with a prior upgrade of BOINC (including accross installs) would affect the projects in this manner (as if it wiped the directories and began again); but this time, it\'s as such.
15) Message boards : Number crunching : BOINC\'s failure to recognize system logoff trashes another WU (Message 23559)
Posted 10 Jul 2006 by Nuadormrac
Post:
Well, about 7% into a WU, something locked up on Vista beta, and though I terminated it (memory wasn\'t relinquished), went to do a logoff to free the lost/non-recovered memory. All well with that? Wrong, BOINC tried to run every single fricken WU that it was scheduled to run, and trashed it\'s entire queue, rather then recognize the OS\'s message about a shut down, with a request that all processes terminate.

I wish the BOINC developers would fix that one, and STOP TRYING TO START NEW WORK UNITS after a system shutdown or logoff was initiated. System shutdown means DO NOT schedule anymore processes to run, cause the system is requesting everything to self terminate.

Well, there could be a reason for a 64-bit version of BOINC in the future, if it means 64-bit science apps. Given that many of the calculations are going to be double precision floating point, 64-bit procs, with a 64-bit execution pipeline, can have an easier time hammering away at the 64-bit calculations. Course, the 32-bit procs do have SIMD extentions that help with these some...

Anyhow, I\'m using the same 32-bit version of BOINC as before, and pretty much installed the same thing and then transfered it over. Thx for the help and all...

Some initial observations, and also a note for some users. The RAM requirements on Vista are much higher then winXP Pro. Microsoft minimally requires (based on their specs) 512 MB of RAM but recommends 1 GB. As has been true in the past, and as I and others rather expected, double those values. On a clean Vista install, with the Radeon (for x86-64 drivers) and the sound added for my nForce, I\'m booting up using about 900 MB RAM just for the OS. Yes, that was read correctly. I now have 1 GB...

One is really going to want 2 GB, at least if the beta is any indication. In practice, this could go up or down, and it\'s hard to say now. On the one hand, betas can have debug code in them that when compiled out might bring the resource requirements down a bit. However, unless it\'s a feature complete beta (which I haven\'t at least heard MS locked the feature set down yet), more features can mean more RAM. As these 2 considerations can play at odds to one another, not sure where the final balance will lie, but seriously doubt CPDN, BBC climate change, and definitely seasonal attribution users will be wanting 1 GB only.

With RALPH and Einstein running on my comp right now, and a browser open, it\'s using about 956 MB RAM according to task manager. I\'ll be looking at trying to save up some money for a RAM upgrade again, either to 2 or 3 GB, and suggest anyone else considering Vista do the same.

Otherwise, much like Linux-64, the UI, and definitely 64-bit apps running off it are much more snappy and quicker to respond. This has been even with the heavy memory useage (well at least before the point I start commiting more memory then is physically in the box). Obviously, in XP-64 (which for support reasons there\'s good reason people, including myself stuck with it), really didn\'t unlock all of the A64\'s true potential...

Well there is going back, if one does a format and reinstall from source media. Of course that means reinstalling one\'s apps...

I\'m still in the process of downloading (which looks to be taken a day given both a 4.01 GB download for the x86-64 version... Yeah, I know, winXP-64 had a dirth of driver support (and well a beta probably isn\'t as well supported), but I imagine that after the thing gets released with both 32 and 64-bit versions comming out at the same time, devs will focus on em both, as they\'ll have to make Vista drivers either way... There\'s also the issue that Intel\'s next x86 CPU (Conroe) will be 64-bit, so it won\'t be an AMD thing only wrt support.

Well, 32-bit BOINC should run just fine on it anyhow, so not anticipating a prob there... If the WUs themselves won\'t care much about new versions, guess I\'ll be putting it on sooner rather then latter. thx...

My expectation is that if the comp details change, then WUs in general won\'t tend to be most forgiving, especially if the server has been getting trickles, and all of a sudden the reported machine is different...

OK, here\'s the thing. I\'ve got about 1,500 hours left on this one climate model and well Vista beta has just hit public release. I\'m sorta wanting to give the new version of Vista a look; though from prior experience (aka win3.1 to win95) I have learned (and the hard way in those days) that an upgrade install can be a really bad thing  Which would mean a backup of the BOINC folder off to my USB HD and then format on the main partition...

Would climate gripe big time if all of a sudden it saw Windows Vista continuing to report in on a WU that was hitherto crunched by winXP Pro?

It could also be that there are still some checks which are done server side to assure the results returned fit within some reasonable limit... Although not running a redundancy run doesn\'t allow one to compare them, some rather gross mis-calculations might be quite obvious.

For example, and not really related to this project. But if someone was doing measurements, and came up with some negative value... Umm, what is negative space? How could an object be -3.0 meters in length? Something like that would be just too illegical to use as a figure for further calculations...

Course, I\'m not with the project, and am not entirely sure what they\'re code is doing, so can\'t say definitively. But some sort of validation checks for certain gross errors, which simply could not be an accurate calculation by any logical conception, might not be beyond reason...

There is one thing which could get one wondering here however:

- On Rosseta for instance, if a person checks their account for granted credit, then reports a finished WU, and checks it again; Rosseta which also uses no quorum grants credit immediately, and one\'s credit score immediately goes up.

- On CPDN however (and also seasonal), if a person checks their credit score, then enables networking (lets say) to allow it to trickle in. Now one checks it again, and the credit score isn\'t immediately incremented.

In fact, it has taken (from my experience) several hours to increment. Now add mention of validation, along with trickling in resulting in a delay before credit is applied. Could it be, that they do have a validator of sorts, that does some rudementary checks such as I\'m postulating are possible. And then if those checks pass, then the trickled in credit is applied? The other possibility would be a delay in the databases updating each other. Someone, on the project, probably has a clearer idea on which it would be...

Yes, I do have a test 5.4.x version, because I\'m also a cruncher on RALPH (Rosseta Alpha), and while we were trying to to resolve problems with the Rosseta beta app, Rom Walton specifically asked us to upgrade, and then apply another debugger to our computer, as he needed info that the debugger for 5.2.13 will not report back to the project...

Anyhow, after looking at another thread, where some suggested a restart on BOINC helped them (something about cacheing user pages having caused this I gather?), I tried restarting though am at December 25 in the model year, so it didn\'t try to trickle again...

I can\'t exactly leave it long without network access, but didn\'t disconnect either (as it suggested), given it was trickling fine before on this unit.

thx, and best hopes on all returning to normal soon...
