7) Message boards : Number crunching : Loss of Project Total Credits (Message 37722) Posted 13 Aug 2009 by old_user1 Post: the only thing I can think of is somehow when I did the live archive dump the other day, a few old results got lost, causing some of these 1-2% losses. but I needed to bump up the cpdn credits since as Thyme Lawn pointed out we\'re actually \"under-crediting\" when compared to other boinc projects. So a 5% boost on that seemed about right. So you may have noticed a drop of 1-2% (when the database archive happened) followed by a 5% increase. CPDN credits have never been an exact science (sort of like climate modelling ;-)....

(Message 37721) Posted 13 Aug 2009 by old_user1 Post: sorry, the server upgrade has been more traumatic than we all thought; plus it was in the middle of the facebook app being launched so 4-5K new participants were downloading big 120MB hadam3p workunits etc. I hope we\'ll have new models soon, such as the regional modelling experiment, and the new coupled-model experiment I\'m working on for the IPCC AR5 (which is why I came back to Oxford - not just to wreck everyone\'s credits!)

I am going to shutdown the old database on Sunday night around 5PM BST, and if all goes well we should be back up Monday morning (UK time).

(Message 36996) Posted 25 May 2009 by old_user1 Post: In case you missed it this month is the 10th anniversary of SETI@home going live. So "hooray" for the granddaddy of volunteer computing & BOINC! It's done quite a lot of work & made a big impact in 10 years, including of course the "spinoff" BOINC which has a lot of projects doing science including CPDN. For a little "history" here's a pic on my first visit with the SETI@home gang in December of 2003, just after the climateprediction.net launch ("CPDN classic") in September of '03, when we were first looking to move to the new BOINC (cpdn was one of the first boinc projects). from left to right back row (forgot the guy's name in front!) - Matt Lebofsky, Jeff "Cobblestone" Cobb, unknown student worker?, David Anderson, Dan Wertheimer, & me.

17) Message boards : Number crunching : Why is Climate Prediction grabbing all the CPU time (Message 29572) Posted 16 Jul 2007 by old_user1 Post: This is not \"BS\" and it\'s not a bug --- there is nothing we on CPDN can do other than make (useless) short workunits that would last a day or so such as other projects. In the \"old days\" of BOINC the scheduler was a simple \"round robin\" which (for example) would run us for an hour, then SETI for an hour, then Einstein for an hour if you had the share settings at 33/33/33. Then things got a bit more \"cleverer\" on BOINC scheduling and we get the problems/notions of short & long term \"debt\" etc. This was all done for what was hoped to be a useful design & good purpose -- however if you run your PC part-time, and CPDN is <50%, it\'s probably going to be pretty useless and get into a \"long-term debt situation\" where it tries to run CPDN for awhile (otherwise it would take 5 years for the workunit to finish). For CPDN to have \"day long\" workunits would require uploading/downloading about 50MB per day, and synch up tens of thousands of start dumps etc. It would be a pretty pointless task and may result in a lot of \"garbage\" science since there\'s no telling that sending out 160 year-long workunits to 160 different types of computers would be a meaningful, single 160-year climate model run. And anyway, I don\'t see why people get offended or mad if CPDN runs two months if it all balances in the end. If you\'re a dedicated BOINC/volunteer computing cruncher, aren\'t you in it for the long haul? So what if it\'s on CPDN for two months then SETI for two months then Einstein for two months etc? It just seems we went from (before the scheduler changes) to people screaming about a lack of work, to now screaming there\'s too much work!
18) Questions and Answers : Unix/Linux : platform \"x86_64-pc-linux-gnu\" not found (Message 29488) Posted 9 Jul 2007 by old_user1 Post: we will eventually have \"true\" 64-bit work (I\'m working on a 64-bit model, hadgam1a, right now), but Milo is looking at \"faking\" x86_64 builds so that 64-bit BOINC clients will get some work (it will be 32-bit models but it probably will run quicker on 64-bit machines).
