Hello team,

I have not received any new tasks for about a week. My machine is pulling down tasks for my other projects. Is something going on or is this just me?

Kevin:

If no tasks are being downloaded then it is usually a good idea to check the project status page, which lists the number of tasks available for download. It's showing "none" at the moment (the total says 25 for some reason but the application totals are each zero). The page is sometimes out of date, which can be another reason - i.e. it may show tasks available to download but in reality they've already been downloaded.

The other reason for no downloads is if you have set the project preferences to accept only some model types, in which case you need to check the project status page to see whether any of those specific types are available.

Thank you Iain, I'll keep an eye on the page. Hope we can get back to crunching soon!

Hi Team,
I am facing similar issues too. Many tasks crashed last year and since then I could never download tasks again. I have set project preferences to accept all model types but nothing happened. I'll be delighted if you could shed some light on this.

My best,

Alessio

Hi Alessio, sadly at the moment there is a bug in the application code that crashes all tasks on both Linux and Mac operating systems so there are no tasks for Mac or Linux computers at the moment. Once the testing site is back up and running (it was down last time I looked) with luck some work on trying to sort the problem out will commence.

On Linux it is possible to use WINE to run Windows tasks. I don't know if there is an equivalent for MacOS?

Hi Alessio,

I have a Mac and decided to use a Virtual Machine to run CPDN tasks in Windows when none are available for MACs.

I've used both Virtual Box & VMWare Fusion - both work & run in the background.

VB is free and Fusion is not.(Fairly expensive). In my experience Fusion is much more efficient in resource usage and seems much less likely to slow up other stuff that one is running on the native system. So I bought it & just thought of it as a one off cost.

They are both fairly easy to install but I found Fusion much easier to work with.

All personal experience of course for what it's worth.

Using either means one can keep crunching for CPDN.

You can always drop me a personal message if you want any other info..

I haven't been paying attention to my BOINCing activity and it dawns on me that I haven't seen any climateprediction activity for a long time.
Is there any word on when things are going to get back to normal?

It's been back for a while now. Long enough for several large batches a few weeks ago, and 6 small batches a day ago.
All long gone now.

This gets discussed in Number crunching.

I have gotten a number of them since The Crash this summer, and are finishing up a couple of them now. And I don't keep a big buffer - they were downloaded on 30 October.

So if you haven't gotten any for months, then there must be a problem with you setup. But they are out of work now, as shown on the server status page. It could be weeks before they have more, if the past is any indication. Good luck.

I got only four work units in the last year; they all completed correctly. The only thing "wrong with my setup" is that it runs on a Linux machine.

Thank you, Jim1348

On your advice, I looked at my setup and somehow I had suspended activity on the climateprediction project. Drunk or high (I'm in Canada) clicking may have been a factor. Thanks again for sending me looking.

If any body can redirect me, please do.

I have been a boinc member for around ten years. At one point cpdn had a screen saver that show global climate trend maps. After a few computer changes I have never been able to get it to initiate again. I thought it was an incredible feature and want it back. I got the impression that it was the hardware on my end. I now have a newer higher powered laptop and would LOVE to get it functioning. Any suggestions? I have left the fold at one point over the lack of that screen saver and put all of my computing power toward other projects. I am giving it another try.

Please any help would be appreciated!

The graphics display was for an earlier climate modelling program, which hasn't been used for years.
The person who wrote the code had an interest in graphics, but he left Oxford years ago, and the focus these days is on organising the running of the far more complex programs now used.

So, no display of climate variables.

Marc:

You are not the only person who misses the screensaver!

Initially, people started to notice that the screensaver itself used a lot of processing power (and real power), which did not itself contribute to the science so many users turned it off. The science is done by an application that runs invisibly in the background. So that was one minor problem. There then started to be compatibility problems with the screensaver itself and the project staff eventually decided to withdraw it when their graphics expert moved to a new job.

So there’s no prospect of it returning as far as I know, but if it’s the science that mainly interests you then that is still continuing - though by bad luck you have posted just at a time when the queue of new models is empty.

Sorry not to have more positive news in the screensaver.

Thank-you VERY much for responding so quickly. Sorry to hear the full story about the graphics, but as a science mind we always prefer the truth. Your explanation made it understandable as to the why it doesn't work at this point.

Live long and prosper my friend!
