Message 4173 - Posted: 15 Sep 2004, 21:46:00 UTC

Up until now I have been running 5 pc for CP using the classic model, and now 2 with xp have errored at the end of running models and requested that I move over to Bionic models and would not carry on.
The other 3 pc\'s use 98, do I lose their stats as I will have to carry on with the classic modeling?
I have created an account and downloaded a model on 1 xp pc, but noting much seems to be hapening.
Also none of my stats from classic have moved over dispite it being 3 days now, (i was in the top 200 on classic) even though I did use the option to link my user names.
and what would hapen to the team that I created with 5 members, do their stats move over too? as I cannot even see my old team in Bionic.
Thanks for any input
Colin

You don't have to use BOINC. The response you got when your classic runs finished was intended as a notification that the preferred way of running the project is under BOINC, not that classic is no longer available. You need to set your classic user profile to active if you want to continue with that, and obviously you will need to do this for the benefit of your Win98 machines, as they do not have a BOINC option.

The classic stats will remain and you will accumulate them as before for classic runs.

I am surprised that nothing seems to happening on your BOINC machine. If you select the work tab you should see an indication of the elapsed time and percentage done (now as percentage of the whole run, not phase). You will also see the familiar progress figures if you right click the project in the work tab and show the graphics. If these are not showing the progress you expect, what messages are you getting in the message tab?

Also check your BOINC preferences. If it is set to run only when idle, you will not see progress whilst you are working.

When the classic runs finished neither of the XP machines would download a new model, both gave a message that they could not contact the server (at different times) this message appeared as a pop up box that would not go away for more than a few seconds until I uninstalled CP classic (in desparation so that I could use the PC)

I think Carl altered the settings in the user profile, to stop your machine simply downloading a new classic model without checking with you. I agree that the screen message is not very user friendly.

B.T.W. Just re read my first post and I will right out 100 times,
BOINC BOINC BOINC BOINC BOINC...............
Spelling was never a strong point of mine.

Colin -

I'm a bit worried that you haven't trickled yet :-)

If you are running 24/7 you ought to trickle a couple of times a day (as with classic) on an Athlon 2600.

If the model is running successfully, is there anything in the message window about trying to contact the CPDN servers?

Hi Andrew,

Well, it's like this............ got home tonight and computer was acting like a slug, when I got the boinc window up, still 0% work done dispite running 24/7 for 3 days now, work window reported model status as downloading??? I did look at message window but I'm afraid bionc attempt 1 had to go as my pc was taking 3-4 min to open any window, and I only read your post after I dumped it sorry I cannot remember all the messages there, but I saw nothing about not being able to contact server.

Unloaded boinc and all fine now, so here goes I'll try again

BTW I can't get my computer to remember my logon name even though box is ticked

Probably best! Download should not take long, and you can monitor progress by clicking the tab. You should find that your machine runs at much the same speed under BOINC as with the classic version (there's a speed bonus for Pentium users but sadly not AMD users). So you will have an instinct by now for spotting where all is not well.

Do you mean on this board? It is important not to log off. The other thing is to make sure cookies are enabled.

Hi, Colin,

Do you log-out? If so, the BB won't remember you when you return. The secret is not to log out.

Did you set up Preferences, for 'General', 'Home', and CPDN? Some folks, relying on defaults, have had trouble if that wasn't done. Amount of available space on your machine could also be a problem, as well as the numbers entered for amount of resource to use.

HTH.

If the status is listed as downloading and there are no transfers listed in the transfers tab something got corrupted in download. The solution is to reset the project.

Job status still downloading even on new model after a hour or so, (I may still be on dial-up out here in the sticks of Rochester but this is ridiculas)it is a completely new download as well.

below latest messages after I told it to update, but they are the only requests for server contact and they appear to be to be successful?

There ought to be something more, though. If BOINC needs to download more work the message window will tell you, and that it is getting some.

Is there anything in the transfers window? This should indicate progress in downloading (there are four elements).

You may also see something in the work tab. If this suggests that it has already downloaded a model, time elapsed will tell you if it is running.
