I've noticed recently that BOINC is using almost 100% of my CPU and I am getting regular warning messages that CPU usage is high. Normally CPU usage would be 50/60% with BOINC running. Any suggestions?

I have 100% CPU usage on my newest CPU, AMD A10-6700 running 4 BOINC projects, two with Virtual Box, on Windows 8.1 but I get no warning messages.Only Einstein@home in its binary radio pulsar search uses very little CPU since it uses the graphics board, a HD 8670D by AMD/ATI.

Ronnie

There are problems with what you posted.

One is that BOINC is supposed to use 100% of what's free on a cpu.
Then you don't say where you see these messages.

We can't see any of your preference settings, so you'll need to tell us what they are, both on the project server, and in your BOINC manager.

Also, I noticed that you're using both the "real" processors and the "Hyper-Threading" processors. Using the latter doesn't give you much of an advantage, because of resource contention inside the chip. Much better to use 50% of them, i.e. 4
Which may also solve whatever problem you're having.

Do you use Norton anti-virus? It has this feature were it alerts you to high resource use. Of course, high resource use it to be expected when running Boinc as it uses unused resources of your CPU to run the models. It will flog you CPU at or very 100%.

You can tell Norton to stop alerting high CPU and memory usage.

I don't get a warning and my system isn't windows but looking at psensor, it shows my maximum cpu usage as being 249%

Thanks for your reply, it is Norton that is warning of the high processor usage. How can I show you my preference settings? As you can probably tell I am not hugely computer savi and not sure what you mean by "real & "Hyper-Threading" processors, how do I change this. I assume it is not a problem using 100% CPU usage, I was just worried about overheating & possible crashes.

Hyper-threading is described here,
But perhaps you don't really have a problem, other than Norton, which often causes problems in one form or another.

The suddenness of usage increase may simply have been caused by Norton upgrading itself, with the new version being more picky about what it reports.

Heat is mostly a problem with laptops, when the air vents getting blocked. And even then, modern processors usually include heat sensors and circuitry to slow down the clock speed when heat becomes a problem.
The problem then becomes one for the owner, who has to work out why the computer has slowed down.

I never used an antivirus on my 2 Linux boxes. Now I am using a HP PC with 64-bit Widows 8/8.1 and I get messages from Norton saying that HP has put an antivirus on it and it exhorts me to activate it. But I am running 4 BOINC projects on it and I don't want that any antivirus can interfere with them. I shall take the risk.

It is dangerous to go online with a Windows PC without a functioning anti-virus program! The best thing to do is activate it (the anti-virus) and then find the exclusion settings and tell it to exclude the Boinc folders from scans.
