Over the last couple of days I've noticed that when BOINC is running climateprediction.net the screen saver is blanking every couple of seconds ... this is very distracting. Until this is resolved I'm suspending climateprediction as the other programs have a very smooth screen saving byproduct.

regards

Most people who run ClimatePrediction turn off the screen saver as the computer resources that are needed to run it slow down the calculation of the model.

I want to see the screen saver!
It is my screen after all!
how do I stop this irritating thing?
I do not believe that the message loafing screen saver than showing it for a few seconds then cycling again uses less CPU time than loading it and leaving it!

It's a problem with all recent versions of BOINC.
See this thread on the BOINC/dev web site.

So, good luck with your requests.

Thanks all.
The best answer is just to turn off the screen saver!
Shame, but much less irritating!

Years ago with a computer that had a much slower CPU, far less RAM and a rather antique graphics card I found that activating the screensaver frequently caused the whole computer to freeze. I also found that when I activated a model's graphics in BOINC Manager it was fine as long as I kept the model graphics window small, but if I maximised the graphics window I immediately got the same problems as with a full-size screensaver. I concluded that on my computer at least the problem lay in the size of the climate model's graphics.

The graphics for these models do seem very intensive when displayed full-screen; I'm not sure whether with RAM or the graphics card requirements or both. Could you compromise by doing the following: deactivate the screensaver, then open the graphics window in the Tasks pane of BOINC Manager. Don't maximise it but leave it open. Whenever you want you could leave it displaying on your desktop, though of course at reduced size.

The screensavers for other projects usually don't display so much real-time data (sometimes almost none) and are therefore easier to run full-size.

I keep getting a message on my screen in relation to project/task hadam3p_pnw_graphics_7.22_windows_intelx86.exe that tells me that the screensaver program can't start because MSVCR100.dll is missing from my computer. I have checked and it is on the computer- under BOINC and also elsewhere (eg under Java). So my screen fills up with black screen files, like a stack of sheets of paper. Can I solve this by going into the BOINC folder and deleting the MSCVR routine?

Correction: I meant can I solve the problem by deleting the screensaver routine in the BOINC folder? Or would that cause other problems?

A speedy response would be greatly appreciated.

Don't know about deleting the routine as I have been on Linux too long to remember anything first hand about BOINC under windows. http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?id=26999 is where you can download the dll to re-install which seems to be the advice for all the other problems which result in that message. - There seem to be quite a lot of scenarios that lead to the problem, not just BOINC.

I notice that you are using W7. Right click anywhere on the screen that is not an icon. You shoild get a menu. The bottom item is personalize. Left click on this and you will et another screen tha allows you to chjange your desktop settings. The screen saver option is bottom right corner of the window. Click there and change your screen saver to anything but Climate prediction. Blank is often a god starting choice.
