Your program is crashing my computer. It displays a greyed out window and locks the computer. I have to power off the computer and reboot to get out of this. I have suspended running climate models until you tell me how to fix this. I have been running these programs for years without problems.

Crashing? Are you sure it isn't a case of failure to respond? (BOINC loses track of its other half.) I see it often (too often!) and it usually reconnects if ignored. How long do you wait before deciding your machine is 'crashed'?

Message 46716 - Posted: 27 Jul 2013, 12:50:41 UTC - in response to Message 46700.

Of the two recent failed tasks - one was a malformed workunit that got a C++ alloc error when the deformed workunit tried to allocate more memory than existed. There have been a few of these malformed models, most of them have been tried and failed several times on various computers and are unlikely (we hope) to be re-issued.

The other one that failed on the same machine -- never seen the like.

BUT -- both failures seem to be rare, sorry you got hit with two of them -- most workunits lately have been working well.

Please try another - I see you have some already downloaded. It is unlikely to get another bad one -- and if you do, keep complaining.

I'm running BOINC Manager Version 7.2.33 (x64), wxWidgets Version 2.8.10 on Windows Vista 64 bit version, and am getting a Visual Fortran run-time error which seems to be associated with climateprediction.net workunit hadcm3n_3ih_1980_40_008348465 starting. The other project being undertaken is malariacontrol.net, but only climate prediction is working when the problem presents. The error window will only go away when I close BOINC Manager.

The task has failed for three others, I think you will be it's last failure. before it is assigned to the dustbin. I note it still shows as running so you may need to manually abort it. All the other tasks in the work unit have also failed from the look of it.

I get this, not every day but at least every third day for an anz task. It is always for me associated with hibernating my machine and restarting. In the past it hasn't stopped tasks finishing so I just ignore it. (My machine is linux but I suspect it is something to do with something using up enough cpu time to stop crunching for a short while.)

But it coincided with the Intel Visual Fortran errors which seems a bit unlikely. Should I be worried or take any action? I got screenshots of the Visual Fortran erros but can't work out how to paste them in here otherwise I would!

I've always ignored those messages. They don't last long and seem not to leave problems in their wake.

Yep I'm getting a similar error too.

Literally has only just started in the last 24 hours.

Never had it before.

Error starts pretty much immediately the task starts running.

I'm running BOINC client 7.2.33 (64 bit) on win 7 home premium (64 bit).

The application is:

"UK Met Office Coupled Model Full Resolution Ocean 6.07"

This is the executable:

hadcm3n_um_6.07_windows_intelx86.exe

These are the tasks:

"hadcm3n_rc6v_1940_40_009112959_4"

"hadcm3n_sb2q_1940_40_009110068_0"

My machine is NOT configured to hibernate.

Error summary (excerpts):

"Intel(r) Visual Fortran run-time error"

"forrtl: severe (17): syntax error in NAMELIST input, unit 5"

"line 393, position 19"

"Stack trace terminated abnormally"

Gary

That indicates something about your computer that the climate program
doesn't like.

If it's only just started, work out what on your computer changed at that time.
Perhaps an update to some program.

Hi Les

Thanks for reply.

I checked - nothing had changed (no installations or updates, etc) within a timeframe that would fit in with the fortran errors.

However, a reboot cleared the issue.

Only thing I can think of is that I ran a disk defrag within the time period relevant to the errors. Deliberately excluded all BOINC files (because of the frequent turnover of files) but I guess something else might have been written / moved, which could have caused the hiccup.

Famous last words.

BOINC client just started a new climateprediction task:

"hadcm3n_s07p_1940_40_009093438_3"

Same Full ocean resolution 6.07 executable as previously.

Exactly the same error, line & position as I previously stated.

Other climateprediction tasks working fine.

Clearly something up with either the 6.07 executable or associated tasks.

Hello

I am starting to get errors like the following for the last day or so.

Can someone please fix the problem or I am going to have to stop doing this for the Climate Prediction Project.

As noted below, the problems with these tasks are discussed in a thread in the number crunching section. They do not like being stopped so if your machine is turned off regularly, it is probably best to exclude this model by clicking on, your account> and going to the relevant settings page. - Too long since I have last done it go give more detail without checking.

Also if you haven't already done best to ensure BOINC directories are excluded from any virus checking, and in computing preferences, ensure leave applications in memory while suspended is ticked, along with while computer is in use. Also set processor % of processor use to 0 which means no restriction. BOINC will still give up cpu time to other things if you are using the computer.

These settings will minimise any stopping/starting of the tasks which this particular model doesn't seem to like on windows boxes.

Edit: I see there is a lengthy debug in the stderr page of at least one of your crashed tasks. Perhaps in the longer term this might help someone work out what the problem is.
