Where to find: BOINC 7.0.
The first part under Prerequisites.

The syntax looks OK.

Well that is wrong for starters

BOINC Programs and Data directory
The default directory where BOINC will install its executables to is:
Windows 32bit: C:\PROGRAM FILES\BOINC\
Windows 64bit: C:\PROGRAM FILES (x86)\BOINC\ - not!! In Program Files (forget the x86) on my Vista x64.

Those directories were already tried. I'll have another go. I still see the word client in any of them.

OK here's what I did, this is in Vista SP2 x64

Exit BOINC.

Open an elevated Command Prompt.

type in cd c:\program files\boinc (to change directory)
then enter boinc --attach_project http://climateprediction.net yourlongkeyhere and hit Enter.

That works.

After a while the CMD will stop streaming new entries. Click the "x" at top right and it will eventually exit and BOINC will close. Simply restart it in normal mode and things will work as usual.

Commad line didn't work.
It started to download, stopped, at some time, and then i exit command line, just to see, that nothing happened in the client.

I guess, this project has to wait month until I'll try again.
Maybe the issue will be solved then.

That's a pity.

I maybe should clarify how I did it in a few more words.

Exit BOINC.

Open an elevated Command Prompt. (Click the Windows key + R or Start > Run and type cmd when it appears above, right-click > Run as Administrator)

Type in cd c:\program files\boinc (to change directory - substitute another letter for C: if the drive letter is different) then enter boinc --attach_project http://climateprediction.net YourLongAccountKeyHere
and hit Enter.

BOINC should start up again in the CMD window. After a while the CMD will stop streaming new entries. Click the "x" at top right and it will eventually exit and BOINC will close.

Simply restart it in normal mode and things will work as usual.

I have a Mac. ;)
So that's not quite comparable.
But beside of that, I did like you mentioned, but nothing happened after CMD stopped downloading stuff.

The situation is still much as I said on the 25th.

While Attach did work with the old set up, the seemingly identical set up with the current server doesn't, and there's no clues as to why not.

So, it's an ongoing situation.

The BETA-Testing-Client will attache, I guess.
At least, I get the return: account not found.
So maybe you'll try the settings of the BETA server?

Beta is a different set up. Everything is on the one server, unlike the main site, where there's the front pages and the BOINC stuff, each on different servers.

We're working on it.

Lo everyone,

Win 8
Boinc 7.0.64
Using an existing account that worked perfectly before, I'm still unable to attch CP since weeks.
Login successful then, after a while, I get "failed to add project".

Thanks,

Have you tried this? command line boinc --attach search
Worked for me new Win8 machine 2 days ago.
If that doesn't work -- there's a possibility that hacking some files in the BOINC data folder might help -- but that's risky and not likely to work for everyone - look at
master_climateprediction.net.xml
and
account_climateprediction.net.xml

People been working on this problem for a while now -- some of the work-arounds work but what I hear they got big guns coming in soon to whack this mole. Que sera --

Many thanks Eirik

I cutted and pasted programdata\boinc\projects\climteprediction subdir from a working PC to the Win8 one plus .XML in programdata\BOINC dir and it works now fine.
process : stop BOINC on both PCs, paste dir and copy .XML files and restart BOINC.

Time to do : 2 min !

Many thanks again

Message 46575 - Posted: 2 Jul 2013, 20:02:25 UTC

Hello,

I have been running BOINC and climate prediction on a three-year-old Macbook Pro laptop. Because of suspected malware, I recently erased the hard disk and reinstalled OS X (Snow Leopard, version 10.6.3).

I have reinstalled BOINC and, using the BOINC Manager drop-down menus, several times tried to attach to climateprediction.net. As discussed over and over in this thread :), that does not work.

I have read much of this thread, particularly messages number 46529 and 46530. Based on those messages, in the OS X terminal application, I tried a command like
open -a boincmanager--attach_project http://climateprediction.net "my long account key"
but the terminal interface does not understand the command. It responds with an error message that the account key is not a file.

Could anyone explain how to attach to climateprediction from a Macintosh?

Thanks for your help.

Best wishes,
Bill Glassmire
PS If it is any help, I have an external disc with a carbon copy of the old OS X system, the one which I suspect of malware.

Bill,

I don't have access to a Mac to experiment, but on other platforms there are (at least) three commands: `boincmgr' which may correspond to the Mac's `boincmanager' (it starts the GUI interface); `boinccmd', which is a command-line utility for interacting with Boinc instances from shell scripts; and `boinc', the main program.

If the Mac has a `boinc' executable, that's the one you want. Check with "apropos boinc".

You may have to change to the Boinc app directory, and then run it as "./boinc --attach_project ...".

Also, if a Boinc instance is running, you'll have to shut it down before trying this, according to Ron's instructions.

Thank you, Greg. I did shut down BOINC Manager before trying any of the attach_project commands.

Here is the most important thing I have found.

In this thread, message 46510, it seems like Les Bayliss has already seen this phenomenon. He gives a link to a webpage of BOINC versions: http://boinc.berkeley.edu/download_all.php
I am running BOINC v7.0.65. From the webpage it seems like the BOINC Manager GUI and the command line version are two different downloads.

I will try downloading the command line version tomorrow.

Further suggestions are welcome but not needed right now. The rest of this post is some research I did before I found Les' message. It may be interesting, but it did not help me solve the problem.

Thanks again for your help, Greg. I will report whatever happens, successful or not.

Best wishes,
Bill Glassmire

I should say, although I know how to use the Terminal app, I am a novice, and I know only a few of the commands.

I tried the command "apropos boinc" and got a response "boinc: nothing appropriate".

I happened upon the command "mdfind", which corresponds to a Mac spotlight search. I tried "mdfind boinc", and I also did a GUI Spotlight search for "boinc". Both methods showed only three applications relevant to BOINC: the manager, the installer, and the uninstaller. There is neither a "boinc" nor a "boinccmd".

mdfind "boinc data" also shows a subdirectory BOINC Data (in /Library/Application Support), but, as far as I can see, mdfind "boinc app" shows no subdirectory BOINC App anywhere.

If the above commands dont work you might want to try typing in SNAFU and the more recent FUBAR. FUBAR especially sums up this whole situation perfectly. ;)
