Can you give it another go, and let us know the outcome? Apparently there was both a hardware failure and also a missing script.

Hey guys,

Tried several times again just now and still not able to reattach to the project. I am able to get past the Identify Account screen, but the I get a message stating "Failed to add project". "An error has occurred; check the Event Log for details."

Well, the only thing the Event Log is telling me is this: "Fetching configuration file from http://climateprediction.net/get_project_config.php". Apparently it is NOT fetching the configuration file. Bummer...

Thanks!

There's a couple of things to try.
1) Reboot computer. (And hence also BOINC.)
2) Some cc_config options.

Starting with the first - (my method):
A) Set all projects to NNW.
B) Look at the graphics for the climate models still running, and wait until each is well clear of Savepoint. (e.g In the 60's, to above the teen's) Wait otherwise.
This makes it safest for not crashing due to disk activity.

C) When safe, Suspend the model.
D) When all are Suspended, (and depending on requirements of work from other projects), Suspend BOINC.
E) Exit from BOINC.
F) Reboot the computer.
G) Restart BOINC.
H) Unsuspend each model.
I) Set projects to Allow new tasks.

Now try to Attach.

Are you installing BOINC in a local account or one of the MS Live accounts they try pushing on people? Win8 is known for having problems with BOINC in the MS Live accounts and you didn't say if you were logging in this way or not.

Also, can you attach to any other projects?

Coleslaw

The recent posters are using Win7, except for one using Server 2008.
And they're reported that they can attach to other projects.

The problems are due to teething problems with the new project front end, which went live last weekend after extensive checking and updating of the science pages.
There was initially a script file missing, and then a VM failed. These have since been fixed.
So it just remains for one of the recent people that have been having difficulties attaching, to try again and report back.

If there no reports either way, this matter will be dropped until someone else DOES complain.

Hi Les,

Kevin reported that he was still unable to attach (above, evening UK time, well after Jonathan's change), so not looking good. This is turning into a bit of a saga unfortunately.

-Cheers,

Mike

Unless someone donates a very large sum of money to the project, issues such as this will only get resolved 9-5 Monday to Friday so I am afraid this will have to wait till Monday. At least on this occasion the problem occurred during working hours so the sorting it out has been started. Normally the problems occur initially at a weekend, more often than not a weekend that is extended by a public holiday.

Byron

Thanks for that. We needed a new test.
Please keep an eye on this thread, and we'll ask you for another test after some more thinking.

Thank you Les ... and yes I would be very happy to do an other another test when ever you ask. I'll keep an eye on this thread. I have subscribed to this thread so that I will receive an e mail to my in box when ever some one posts to this thread. I know ... and it's very sad that this worthwhile scientific project ... to investigating the fate of Earth ... is so very short of funds and staff ... Andy, Jonathan and the team at Oxford and around the world ... are doing the best they can.

That worked for me just now... but it's "--project_attach" not "--attach_project" (at least for the 64-bit Linux client I'm using anyway).

Hi all,

just for info. I'm using CentOS 6.4 i368 and BOINC 6.10.45.
I can add this project (only) using boinccmd. But I don't get any tasks. The error log shows:

Invalid or missing account key. To fix, remove and add this project.

boinccmd --project_attach http://climateprediction.net 'ID (32 chars)'

OK Chaps,

I have looked at this, and all I can see is that the new server sent the page with an explicit character set (utf-8) whereas the original page did not.

I have removed this character set from the HTTP header on the new server.

Could you please try again, attaching to the project?

It would be very very helpful to know if you can attach or not, on Linux, Mac OS or Windows (inc Versions), because it seems, from reading this thread, to be a problem with older Windows OS machines.

I look forward to hearing the results of the test.

Jonathan

If you look in your 'Boinc data' directory (in different places depending on operating system / your configuration), you should find a file called get_project_config.xml.

This contains the contents of the file received from the server. It might be worth posting a copy to make sure it looks OK (do not post any other xml files, some of them contain sensitive info such as the boinc account key).

Hey Jonathon,

On June 1st, Byron Leigh Hatch posted a couple of screen shots. This is what I am seeing as well when trying to attach to Climateprediction.net.

This is a new BOINC install.

I am running Windows 7 Ultimate (64bit)with SP1.
BOINC 7.0.64.
24GB RAM, 24GB PageFile, and plenty of hard drive free space.

I attempted to attach again this morning at was BOINC again failed to attach and said to see the event log. And this is all the event log shows:

6/3/2013 9:05:26 AM | | Fetching configuration file from http://climateprediction.net/get_project_config.php

My "get_project_config.xml":(Note, in place of "min_passwd_length" I typed in "XXX". Nothing else changed in this file as posted here.

Kevin

OK Chaps,

I am pretty sure that I know what the problem is, but I will have to write a script tomorrow to work around the current problem.

Long ago someone at CPDN decided not to use a dynamic server_status script, but to write that file out as HTML, and redirect users to that file.
The static page cannot respond to requests for the data to be output as XML, which is what clients request.

...so this problem should be sorted tomorrow.

Hello Jonathan, Mike, Les and every one,

to get some ideas and suggessions I started a thread
over at the BOINC Message board
Called: Cannot attach to Climateprediction.net

http://boinc.berkeley.edu/dev/forum_thread.php?id=8435

Ageless aka Jord posted the following ideas and suggessions:

<quote>

It's a problem with the new front page of CPDN, not so much with the client.
An already added CPDN can easily be contacted by the client:

6/3/2013 3:55:08 PM | climateprediction.net | update requested by user
6/3/2013 3:55:10 PM | climateprediction.net | [sched_op] Starting scheduler request
6/3/2013 3:55:10 PM | climateprediction.net | Sending scheduler request: Requested by user.
6/3/2013 3:55:10 PM | climateprediction.net | Not requesting tasks: "no new tasks" requested via Manager
6/3/2013 3:55:10 PM | climateprediction.net | [sched_op] CPU work request: 0.00 seconds; 0.00 devices
6/3/2013 3:55:10 PM | climateprediction.net | [sched_op] ATI work request: 0.00 seconds; 0.00 devices
6/3/2013 3:55:12 PM | climateprediction.net | Scheduler request completed
6/3/2013 3:55:12 PM | climateprediction.net | [sched_op] Server version 611
6/3/2013 3:55:12 PM | climateprediction.net | Project requested delay of 3636 seconds
6/3/2013 3:55:12 PM | climateprediction.net | [sched_op] Deferring communication for 01:00:36
6/3/2013 3:55:12 PM | climateprediction.net | [sched_op] Reason: requested by project

So the scheduler works.

Meaning that the 'add to project URL' (http://climateprediction.net/ in the case of BOINC Manager Add Project Tool)
may not be correct, or that the add-project logic on that web site is not correct.
Seeing how http://climateprediction.net/ gets me to the new CPDN front page,
I can only assume that the add-project logic is flawed.

I hope this helps
