This files continues to work when I resume work on the computer, and slows the computer down a great deal. Apart from manually stopping the program from running, via control/alt/delete, what else can i do?

Here are a couple of suggestions:
1. The processor in your machine is a Pentium 4, which has one core with hyperthreading giving two threads. However, the hyperthreading only gives an approximate 20% speed improvement even though the operating system behaves as if there were two independent cores. So if you run two models on that processor each model will compete for computer resources and take ~1.8 times as long as a single model. The machine will respond better and the likelihood of a successful completion will improve if you limit that machine to one model at a time. Either suspend the second model when it arrives or change the 'on multiprocessors use at most X%' setting to 50% (either in BOINC Manager or by following the 'your account' link on this site).
2. When you have something processor-intensive to do on the machine, use the 'snooze' option, by clicking the right mouse button on the BOINC Manager icon in the system tray. That suspends the model for an hour.
Actually, there's a third suggesstion: change the 'climateprediction.net preferences' in your account to select only HADAM3P models: that processor will really stuggle with the longer HADCM3N models.
