Hi
all my setting are correct (allow new tasks etc) but every climate prediction task has disappeared and nothing new arrives. I have tried to "reset project" to no avail.
Why is my computer feeling so rejected?!
Ideas and help much appreciated

The computer has hypochondria, so tell it not to be so self-centred and to pull itself together.

The most likely explanation is a series of posts in the news thread, to which it is a good idea to subscribe. In summary, there's no work at the moment until a range of problems is sorted out.

Thanks for this
- though in a kind of anthropomorphic kind of way the hypochondria appeals!

I do wonder whether it would be a good idea to keep people involved so they dont stray to other projects and not come back - maybe not feasible.

Presumably my very sensitive computer will keep on politely requesting work until it arrives!

Regards

James

I agree. It makes little sense to have occasional recruitment campaigns (e.g. weatherathome) and then lose both new joiners and old hands by having no work and no disk space. I'm sorry to say that I'm well beyond the point of believing the 'limited resources' explanation (though resources are indeed limited); planning is cheap, engineering a little more expensive - the project's apparent antipathy to both is stopping it doing the science it wants to do. Perhaps Mr Micawber was right - something will turn up!

James
For a lot of years now, the people involved in the day-to-day running of the project have been applying band-aids to various parts to keep things running.
With the arrival of the new people, and, no doubt, lots of discussions about planning for the future, these band-aids have been removed. The fast way! Which is why it's been painful. :)

One of the things that has been in progress, is the moving of 2 terabytes of data from one of the servers. This started about the 17th of May, and has just finished.
As you can see, moving 'live' data over the university network, while ensuring that the researchers can still access it, is not a trivial task. Neither is a lot of the other work being done.

And, from one of the posts in our private discussion area from about 10 days ago:
There will be no NEW work until the transfer of data off climateapps2 has taken place.
However, the resubmission job is running for some HADam3p tasks, so as far as I am aware there is work to be processed, despite what the project status page says. (we generated 170 GB of new work yesterday alone)

According to the project's front page, there's still over 40,000 computers still attached, so any that have left have been minimal.
