hi all,

I am quite new here. searched the forum but found nothing sorry.

I always get 8 ore more WU from the server, but I only want 1 such very huge WU from cpdn.

I have following computer:
GenuineIntel Intel(R) Core(TM) i7 CPU Q 720 @ 1.60GHz [Family 6 Model 30 Stepping 5] (8 Prozessoren)
NVIDIA Quadro FX 880M (1024MB) driver: 18974 Microsoft Windows 7 x64 Edition, (06.01.7600.00)

Is there a setting, with which I can reach the following situation:
1 CPU is fulltime working on ONE WU from cpdn
7 CPU are working for other projects

I assume setting project share to 12.5 will lead to situation, that I will get 8+ WU in queue but only 12.5% calculation time for the project.

Sorry for the silly question.

Thank you & kind regards,
Andi

It isn't a silly question; it's very sensible.

Boinc doesn't allocate specific cores to particular projects or particular tasks. If you allocate 12.5% of resource share to CPDN, Boinc could share the work between projects in many ways because your computer has cores + time. The Boinc scheduler's priority should always be to finish all the downloaded tasks before their deadline; this could result in a situation in which sometimes 50% of the cores are processing CPDN but at other times no cores at all. Boinc will aim to give a 12.5% share of your resources to CPDN in the long term.

I cannot think of any way to limit the number of climate models you download at one time to a specific number. In Boinc manager > Advanced > Preferences > Processor usage there's no option to download a specific number of tasks. People have asked the Boinc programmers for this option but I don't think it exists.

You could normally set CPDN to No new work. Before you allow new work for CPDN you could in Advanced > Preferences > Network usage limit the additional work buffer to less than the maximum of 10 days. That would probably limit the number of new models, but it wouldn't result in a specific number.

But if you allow the Boinc scheduler to manage your download selection from all your projects, in the long term your computer will give 12.5% of its CPU time to CPDN.

However, if you receive more climate models than you really want, you can suspend some of them. If they send results past their deadline the CPDN server will still accept the files and the data will be used. Just try not to upload results too late. The final data from one FAMOUS model is needed so that the next 200-year period can begin.

The current CPDN models are not so enormous. On your computer a FAMOUS should 'only' take 8-9 days crunching 24/7. The regional models are shorter. A European model could take 85 hours on your computer; the South Africa model is slightly shorter. You can choose the model type(s) you want in the ClimatePrediction preferences in your account.

thank you very much for your help!

I will try your suggestion with the work buffer and if it will not work I will use "no new work" + suspending all additional downloaded WU, keeping only one or two.

Also the information about the region models was very good for me!

Thanks a lot!
