Unacceptable per task completion time

I\'m no longer donating to this project and would like to explain why. It\'s the per task completion time. It monopolizes my time for just climate prediction at the expense of other tasks. I use GridRepublic precisely because I want to spread my donation over several projects. The maximum per task time I\'m willing to support is about twelve hours. Yes, I can turn down the switch time but that has the opposite problem - then I am spread so thin that projects expire before they are completed. Given these choices I concluded that the climate prediction project prefers time donors who want to specialize, and have removed myself. Best wishes, and my sincere appreciation for the team\'s efforts. |

I\'m no longer donating to this project and would like to explain why. Dear Dave: Sorry to see you go. You are right, ClimatePredictions models different than most of the other DC projects. They definitely are much bigger and longer than the others like Rosetta or Seti. This is doublely true when you stop to think that the model types that are available at this time are the “short†ones. The old Hadcm3 models (no longer available) used to take 3300+ hours on my old machine. They used to take me 7 months to finish. The coming “Millennium†model will probably take roughly as long, but, I do have a somewhat faster machine now so maybe I can get one done in only 5 months! |

Hi Dave I shall also be sad to see you go but I perfectly understand your point of view. In addition there are a lot of Boinc projects doing valuable research, so from the scientific point of view their tasks are also extremely worthwhile. If in the future you ever do decide to crunch a climate model, look first at the ClimatePrediction preferences in your account where the time to completion of the different model types is mentioned and choose the shortest type that the Server status page lists as available. Best of luck with GridRepublic and your projects and thank you for your contribution to CPDN. Cpdn news |

... The coming “Millennium†model will probably take roughly as long, but, I do have a somewhat faster machine now so maybe I can get one done in only 5 months! Some of us hope for the full 1200 years as an option and it is a possibility. However, we\'re Beta testing 200-year segments, the idea being that, after Spinups are completed, each 200-year segment\'s uploads will provide input to spawn the next segment, starting 799CE through 1999. Beta run times on my Q6600s, ~227 hours and on Q9550s ~173 hours. [EDIT: My machines all run at stock speed.] Hope that helps.
