Hi,

I\'m getting the following error reference on climate prediction: GENERAL-2.1.01-0500-0000

What do I need to do to restore normal service?

The problem is occurring on the ClimatePrediction Client and arises when I try to make contact with the site (eg, uploading results)

I\'ve just checked my Boinc Manager and it\'s showing no tasks associated with Climate Prediction.
Thanks,

Hi Stuart

I\'m one of the moderators on the ClimatePrediction forums where my username is mo.v.

We will need more details about what has happened or not happened before we can tell you what to do. Could I ask you to explain the problem on the CPDN forum either here:

http://climateapps2.oucs.ox.ac.uk/cpdnboinc/forum_index.php

or here:

http://climateprediction.net/board/index.php (where you\'d have to register separately preferably also using the name Stuart Bruff so we\'d recognise you).

Posting on a forum is better because you\'d receive advice from more people who know about all the possible problems.

Please say whether you have a climate model in the Tasks tab of your Boinc Manager and whether it will or won\'t contact the server by sending its trickles.

I\'ve looked up your Boinc details at the BoincStats statistics and credits site and it looks as if you\'ve accidentally created two separate accounts so we\'d have to help you sort that out as well

Hi Stuart

I don\'t recognize that error message; it\'s more likely to be a Windows error than a BOINC one.
Most of your models have failed, with messages that don\'t help with finding out why, so you may have a hardware problem.

One thing that you can do, though, is to upgrade to a version 6 of BOINC.
That way the graphics will work.

The uploading problem may be separate to the one about constant failure of the models.
I notice that you succeeded in downloading a new model shortly after posting your message, so hopefully you\'ll have better luck with that one.

We now have another member, Felicity, with the same GENERAL-2.1.01-0500-0000 error code. I will be pointing her to this thread.

Stuart, first of all please tell us:

*1 You have no climate models in the Tasks tab of your Boinc Manager?
*2 Is ClimatePrediction listed in the Projects tab?
*3 Where did you see this error message? In your Boinc Manager Messages tab or in a popup window?
*4 Are any files listed in the Transfers tab of your Boinc Manager?
*5 Has your internet connection changed recently?
*6 Have you recently installed a new firewall?

If no models are there in the Tasks tab and no files in Transfers, there will unfortunately be nothing to upload to the server. In which case it would be a good idea to upgrade to a new Boinc version (yours is old) before we give you advice about how to avoid the 22 and -226 errors that many of your models have crashed with.

To upgrade, exit from Boinc by right-clicking on the icon at the bottom of the screen and selecting Exit. Don\'t uninstall your current version. Download a new version from here.

It\'s a Climate prediction error message, not a windows one. However, it\'s not a BOINC one and seems to belong to the original client.

I don\'t think it\'s a hardware problem, but I\'ve just upgraded to v6.

Yes, I checked the messages and it told me the http address, that was in force, was wrong. I followed the instructions by detaching the project and then re-attaching it. That got rid of one source of error messages, but still leaves the original client message.

*1 You have no climate models in the Tasks tab of your Boinc Manager?

No. I\'ve cured that by detaching and re-attacing the Project.

*2 Is ClimatePrediction listed in the Projects tab?

Yes, it was, but according to the BOINC messages, the Project web address was wrong (don\'t know why).

*3 Where did you see this error message? In your Boinc Manager Messages tab or in a popup window?

Popup.

*4 Are any files listed in the Transfers tab of your Boinc Manager?

Not in OOINC.

*5 Has your internet connection changed recently?

No.

*6 Have you recently installed a new firewall?

Not knowingly :-\\

I\'ve upgraded. However, I suspect that the popup error message is to do with the original CP Client. I\'ve checked the server connection and that appears to be fine (Check CPDN Central Server Connection returns \'Congratulations, your computer is CPDN ready\' after POST and GET tests). However, I\'m (still) getting an internal server error when I try to upload results - the error message says to report to carlc@comlab.ox.ac.uk, which I\'ve done but got a bounce message in reply.

That email address leads me to suspect that you originally started with the \"classic\" version of the project, which ran until mid 2004, and closed in 2006.
It\'s not compatible with the BOINC version.

The models being run these days don\'t give popup messages, and peoples email addresses aren\'t given as a contact when problems occur.

If you select the project name in the Project tab of your BOINC manager, and then look at the left hand column, you\'ll see several buttons to click that take you to various help areas. This may be easier to find if you expand the manager to full screen.

I also thought Stuart must have been trying to upload files from a Classic model, but then I saw his CPDN registration using Boinc and the fact that he\'s been processing CPDN models with Boinc for a long time.

Stuart, did this error popup appear on the AMD computer those models were processed on (the computer we can see by clicking on your name here). Or is a second computer involved?

Now that you\'ve installed a new Boinc version you should be able to attach it to CPDN. In the Manager advanced view click Tools then Attach to project. Select ClimatePrediction and the correct address should jump into the box.

During that Attach to project process you\'ll be asked whether you are an existing ClimatePrediction member. Say yes and use the exact same email address and password as you used for CPDN earlier.

(I see from your BoincStats page which you can see by typing your name into the search box that you have three accounts for different Boinc projects. LHC & Seti on #1, Einstein & WCG on #2 and CPDN on #3. Once you have new CPDN models running on account #3 we\'ll tell you how to get accounts #1 and #2 \'merged\' with it. Don\'t get any new work from those other projects at the moment.)

Let us know whether you can attach to CPDN as I have explained and get new models running.

Yes, it was on the same AMD computer and the error message I was commenting on was from the Classic model - I didn\'t realize it was no longer in use; I thought I\'d seen signs of upload life from it in the recent past :-\\

I\'ve already done that, thanks.

Everything appears to be running normally on BOINC now.

Am eagerly awaiting advice on how to put everything into one account :-)

Hi again Stuart

Thanks for that confirmation. By coincidence another Classic member emailed the project with the same error code so because of your message it was possible to identify her problem more quickly. I\'ve now started a thread about this on the independent forum here so if we receive more queries by email we can refer people straight to that. You may want to read what I\'ve said there about uninstalling Classic.

Now for your accounts. All these projects run on Boinc which identifies our accounts on every project by our email address, not our username. If all our accounts have the same email address we will be considered one person and our credits from every project will be added together by the statistics sites like BoincStats.

You need to go to your account at all the other projects eg Einstein, WCG and change your email address to the one you used for CPDN. For example, on the Seti main page there\'s a link to one\'s account here. You can edit your account. I think you will then be told to go into your Boinc manager, highlight the project in the Projects tab and update it to tell the project server about your change. (If you don\'t want these projects to send you more tasks at the moment you can first set them to No New Work.)

When you\'ve done that for every project it\'s a good idea to update every project again in the Projects tab.

You should be able to find every project\'s home page with an account link by highlighting the project in your Boinc manager. A button with a link should appear.

Usually it takes at least a couple of days for the stats sites to merge your different accounts into one.

When you\'ve tried that we will be able to give you a few suggestions about how to avoid your models crashing with 22 and -226 exit codes.
