My PC seems to be having problems downloading new tasks, and those it does download are abandoned before they get any CPU time. Any ideas?

Looking at the \'net, there are a couple of possibilities:
1) You have a corrupted file, possibly a .dll
2) A program that you in stalled just before your problems started is causing problems. See this post at Einstein@Home.

First thing to do, is to set the project (in the Projects tab), to No new tasks to stop the wasting of models.
Another thing that you can do once you\'ve fixed it, is to upgrade to the latest recommended version of BOINC, 6.2.19

Note that this is quite different to the way your current version works, so if you have problems, please ask.

Thanks very much Les. Having looked at the Einstein thread, I too have Spyware Terminator, and a ferret around in that takes me to a list of blocked processes including one that\'s clearly BOINC related. I\'ve taken that off the block list and we\'ll see what happens.

cheers!

Sorry to say things have ground to a halt for me, this is where I seem to be ending up...

Would uninstalling BOINC and upgrading to a new version be an idea? If so, can I retain my credits etc or do I start from scratch again? Any other inspiration gratefully received!

You shouldn't uninstall the previous version of BOINC, especially if you are using a 5.x version. The upgrade will migrate your data to a new folder under C:\Documents and Settings.

Version 6.2.19 seems no longer available for download on the Berkely.edu site. I have just upgraded to the latest version 6.6.20, and it seems to run fine. Earlier this year I had a bit of a problem with version 6.4.x, so I stayed with 6.2.19 until the upgrade today.

P.S. be sure to make a backup of your BOINC folder before you start the upgrade.

Hi Steve

Upgrade your BOINC but, as Pwillener says, just download the new version and let BOINC itself sort out where the new files are put for version 6. Find out how version 6 works in the BOINC FAQ here.

Something is preventing your climate models from starting. They're all crashing with exit code -185 and 'Create process failed. The handle is invalid.'

Check that you have allowed BOINC through your firewall and exclude both the BOINC and BOINC Data directories from being scanned by your antivirus and antispyware product(s).

Put BOINC (boinc.exe and boincmgr.exe) in the trusted zone of your firewall and only AV/AS scan the directory or directories manually after closing down BOINC.

I'm not sure whether this will solve the problem but these are precautions we should all take anyway.

Please also see my News post dated 13 Sep 2008 here. I'm not sure whether your problem with HadAM3P models has the same cause, but if that is the case a BOINC upgrade should solve it.

Do post back and tell us how everything goes.

I have downloaded a new version of the model but it will not run. Boinc insists that I have suspended it. It refuses to resume and seems to be hung up.

If you run multiple Projects, boinc might owe those Projects some time -- assuming CPDN was running with priority to meet a deadline. You could check by temporarily suspending the other projects. If CPDN starts, that\'s the answer and you can restart the other Projects. Eventually, boinc will balance its books and CPDN will then be given its time slices. (It\'s all controlled by the percentages you assign each Project in your Preferences.)

First, be sure to check the buttons on the Tasks page and Activity button.

Also note that there are about 4 different ways of suspending tasks ... you need to find the right one in order to be able to resume.

My elapsed time is running. My percentage completion is frozen. My to completion time is expanding.

My graphic runs its GUI features but has no reflection of wu data. (It\'s Blue).

My program has not trickled since it reached the frozen percentage (50.888/9) in June/July but it keeps trying, receving the message, e.g,:

8/24/2009 8:29:22 AM Project communication failed: attempting access to reference site.
8/24/2009 8:29:24 AM Internet access OK - project servers may be temporarily down.

I think my expanding hours since the percentage froze have been wasted (ca. 200-250) and that the expanding time to completion is probably accurate. ????

Don\'t want to abort big effort (HADSM3). HELP ! (please)
