Hello, I have currently a HadCM3-Model running, which is almost finished: Task
A few days ago (March 13) I did the Windows update (after exiting BOINC), and after restarting BOINC, the status of the model was suddenly \'Hochgeladen, Meldebereit\' (which, I think, corresponds to uploaded and ready for communication). The network activity was suspended at this time, so nothing has been uploaded, also according to the task details. As I wanted to have this model finished and not being reported as crashed that short before the end, I tried to put a 3 days-old backup in place of the BOINC-folder. But this did not work, it always sad that the boinc.dll is still in use when I tried to delete or move the original BOINC folder. A repair installation of BOINC was also not helpful, so I finally deinstalled BOINC via its deinstallation routine, deleted the corrupted BOINC folder (or what was left from it after the deinstallation) and put the backup folder in its place. I can start now boincmgr manually, and everything is running as usual. But I am not sure how to continue. Will the result upload normally, when is the best time to install BOINC again (after the upload?), do I have to attach then to the project again, and so on...
Thanks for advice. ;-)

If the restored model is now running fine, then it should carry on until the end - when it will generate the files for uploading. Since BOINC was running with network activity off, there shouldn\'t even be anything apparent on the model\'s Web page: if activity had been turned on, you might have got a \'client detached\' message. If the model is running then you must have a valid BOINC installation and are correctly attached to a project. My practice is to run a \'repair\' installation from the Control Panel after restoring a backup (to reset the file permissions, as I run BOINC in service/protected mode).

The difficulty in moving the BOINC folder may be due to BOINC not being closed down completely: two stages are needed - first, use the BOINC Manager \'Advanced | Shut down connected client\' menu option, then exit BOINC Manager. The BOINC folder can then be moved, copied or deleted. (This is also advisable when making a backup.)

Hi Gchrist, welcome to the forum.

Your computer has done a lot of work for CPDN!

Congratulations on finally restoring your backup successfully. Just continue to run the model. When it gets past the model date where it crashed and begins to process new data the new trickles will begin to show on the model page. It should upload normally when it completes. The model\'s data will be used by the researchers.

The best time to upgrade your BOINC version is when you have no running models. In the Projects tab of BOINC Manager select climateprediction and click once on the button for No new Tasks. It will then say Won\'t get new tasks in the status column. Do this now.

After your current model has completed you should also click on the Update button in the Projects tab to make your model report (melden) to the server immediately. You will then have no CPDN tasks and can upgrade BOINC.

You should not need to attach to CPDN again after the BOINC upgrade. If you are upgrading from BOINC v.5 to v.6 please first look at the information about version 6 here. You can read the same post in German by clicking on the flag. But I don\'t think Jakob\'s translation includes the second-last English section about how to exit from BOINC if you have a service installation. The BOINC exit instructions for a service installation are very important.

Thanks for your advice. The model is still running, but I did not allow network activity yet, since I am not yet sure what happens when I switch it on.

>>If the model is running then you must have a valid BOINC installation and are correctly attached to a project.
This is obviously true for my backup, since the model starts to process when I start the BOINC manager. The open question for me is which kind of validation from the server side (CPDN or BOINC) occurs when the client contacts the server. Especially whether it makes a difference if BOINC is \'correctly\' installed or just started manually (as I mentioned above, I removed BOINC from my system to get the corrupted folder deleted - BOINC does not appear as installed program in my windows software list). I hope you see where I aim at. And I did not dare a new installation of BOINC over the backup folder because I was frightened to wreck it again.

However, the model will be finished tomorrow. I will do another backup of the finished model, and sometime later I will try to upload the model.

As you have a backup of the finished model, there should be no danger in allowing network activity and letting the completed model upload. The CPDN server accepts trickles and files from models even if they come from a different computer.

As the model continued processing, I think your BOINC installation was probably OK for it.

However, I see from details of your previous models that the server is not detecting your BOINC version. If your trickles and files do not upload, you will have to install BOINC again over the backup folder. If you had BOINC v.5.*.* you must choose that to install. If you had BOINC 6.*.* that is what you must reinstall.

If necessary you can get version 5 here.

If you currently have version 5, upgrade to BOINC 6 after this model has completed.

In my experience, BOINC is very good at installation: the project data isn\'t changed as BOINC is installed (or uninstalled). The main thing to watch out for is that if you want to install BOINC on a machine where there is already some project data then BOINC needs to know where to find that project data. BOINC will usuallly work out where the data is by itself, but it is worth paying attention to the selected installation location as BOINC is being installed and changing that location if necessary. If BOINC is installed to a new location, then you\'ll be asked to attach to the project again and will probably get a new model: the old project information will seem to have disappeared, in which case just uninstall BOINC and re-install it to the correct location - the project data will then reappear.
