i have notice that system seems to have very low output. it\'s always complaining it can\'t get any more work.

i kept getting (reached daily quota of 2 results) on that system, so i reset the project and stop it for two days. and i was actually able to catch what is going on.

I have attached the log below. It sounds like as soon i start it. i went and fetcha new work unit. when that was done, it started the unit and completed it in 58 seconds. then got the next one and completed it in about the same time.
i didn\'t get credit for these units. so is there a way to debug this to figure out why it fails all units like that? should i disconnect that computer from CP.net altogether?

That host is fast core2duo 2.4 ghz stable stock Dell computer, (not overclocked), has lots of memory (4gig) and his main work computer. just dont get why it\'s not working on this one and it is on all the other one i have.

Let me know any thought or suggestion would be appreciated.

Hi Richard, welcome to the forum.

That\'s a nice computer which should be perfectly able to run CPDN models. The significant thing is the crashed models\' exit code, always -2, and the stderr crash messages

<core_client_version>6.4.5</core_client_version>
<![CDATA[
<message>
- exit code -2 (0xfffffffe)
</message>
<stderr_txt>
Could not launch model process. Last Error=193
zip warning: name not matched: ./stdout_um.txt
zip warning: name not matched: ./stderr_um.txt
zip warning: name not matched: ./dataout/yabsd.out
zip warning: name not matched: ./stdout_um.txt
zip warning: name not matched: ./stdout_um.txt
zip warning: name not matched: ./stderr_um.txt
called boinc_finish

</stderr_txt>

In another thread it was said that this -2 exit code was probably a BOINC permissions problem. Thyme Lawn posted instructions for investigating the permissions. But the member with the problem never posted back so we don\'t know whether that worked or not.

Another member getting the same -2 code posted to say that he\'d uninstalled BOINC, deleted the complete BOINC Data folder, reinstalled BOINC and reattached to CPDN. Everything then worked normally.

As this computer has no successfully running CPDN models, I think the quickest solution for you would be this total uninstall & delete.

Please post back to tell us whether that works. If it doesn\'t work, someone who knows more than me will have to advise you.

I tried 5 times uninstalling everything and deleting all the files (program and data) left and it still doest work still. last time i used a different directory for data and still didn\'t work.
i can\'t find that thread that talk about debugging the problem.
this is REALLY anoying.

A couple of points:
1) Constantly doing a Reset to get another model is just wasting models.
2) In your original post, you said that a couple of models finished in a few seconds. This is impossible; they take weeks to months. The reason that you didn\'t get any credits for them, is because they didn\'t run for long enough to produce a trickle, which is what the credits are based on.

BOINC version 6.4.5 is known to have problems on some projects. Try using 6.2.18, or 6.2.19 in Unprotected mode, and see if this works.
It\'s just been found that 6.2.19 in Protected mode can\'t be restored from a Copy & Paste backup, as this doesn\'t copy some of the permissions.

1) Don\'t worry i am not wasting models. i have been spoon feeding new model until i can get this thing to work and each time they get reported as computing error, i assume you guys recycle these.
2) what is said is the complete in 40-50 seconds with an error, i am not worried about credit, I just want to get this thing to work.. i know they take a while a to run I am running 7-8 computers on this project and others and I have been using boinc for a while. ( I have a degree in computer science I am not totally retarded)
3) I tried 6.2.19 this morning and same thing, I went and read the other thread and add myself as a user for these directory and I gave full control to every user in the security list, it still didn’t work

Why are you guys not creating a new directory with the right permission when it failed to unzip the files? Does the CP actually requires winzip to be installed on the computer? Any other suggestion to debug this at this point?

... i assume you guys recycle these.

Not any more. This idea changed a year or so back.
Now, a certain number of copies are issued at the same time, and if all of these fail for some reason, then that\'s it for that parameter set.

... and just mean that the \"finished\" (i.e. failed) task is attempting to upload any results files that it expects to have been created. However, because the task has finished early, the results files have not been generated, so BOINC reports them as being absent. The message does not mean that there is anything wrong with BOINC\'s ability to zip or unzip files.

If there is a more subtle unzipping problem relating to the executable files themselves, then it should be apparent by looking in the ...\\BOINC\\projects\\climateprediction.net folder to see whether the required \'.exe\' files are there. Do you have any \'.zip\' or \'.exe\' files in that folder?

There are a number of installation options, such as protected application execution (which is the most restrictive from a permissions point-of-view). Have you tried them all? (Windows XP may need a logoff/logon cycle for permission changes to be honoured; re-boot to be sure.)

Have you excluded the BOINC data folder from any virus-checking or other security software?

This Microsoft KB article looks a bit unlikely, but might be worth checking: Event ID 7000 and \"%1 Is Not a Valid Win32 Application\" Error Message When You Start a Service.

Message 36086 - Posted: 6 Feb 2009, 20:58:33 UTC - in response to Message 36083.

Please don’t use the words “retard” or “retarded” on this forum. People with intellectual disabilities find these terms intensely offensive, as do their families. Some of these families take part in this project and use these boards. The correct term is “Mentally Challenged.”

Jim: sorry I didn’t mean to offend anybody around here.
Iain, Les and Mo.v Thanks for the great help so far!!!

Eureka, I think you guys got me going!!!!

\"This Microsoft KB article looks a bit unlikely, but might be worth checking: Event ID 7000 and \"%1 Is Not a Valid Win32 Application\" Error Message When You Start a Service.\"

I had a service that was failing for months on my computer, I couldn’t figure out why.
I had a File named “Program” in my C:\\
It sounds like that was causing the problems with my other service. As soon as I renamed the file the other service started working again.
Hopefully that will do the trick. Crossing my finger. i am out of credit for the day.
I\'ll let you know on Monday.

Richard, the reason for this -2 exit code isn\'t easy to pin down, and a Google search for it occurring on other BOINC projects yields no really useful results. This sort of problem leaves us all mentally and computationally challenged.

Could you tell us what the file you had to rename consists of? I\'m wondering whether it\'s related to BOINC or CPDN or unrelated.

Could \'Program\' used on its own as a file name be a no-no wherever it\'s located?

Yes it does work! i got two instance of CP working in parallel and already up to 9 and 14%!
So here what i did in details to resolve the -2 exit code based on you guy advice is the following. I went in my C:\\ and it did this.
The filename and path was C:\\Program

C:\\>dir Pro*
Volume in drive C has no label.
Volume Serial Number is D476-867B

Directory of C:\\

02/16/2007 03:52 PM 527,671 Program
02/04/2009 09:24 AM <DIR> Program Files
1 File(s) 527,671 bytes
1 Dir(s) 13,816,889,344 bytes free

C:\\>

Since Boinc installs under Program Files by default, the service that starts it try to resolve the name, but since the is a space in \"Program Files\" due to that windows bug it resolve to C:\\Program\\Boinc\\ of course that not a directory and the path resolution for the service starts fails, it doesn’t start the program and the output files are not created. I think you also resolve this by installing Boinc in C:\\boinc that would explain why some people have to use different directory to get it to work.

i went and renamed the file \"Program\" to \"A Program\" in my \"C:\\\" directory and it took care of it. My other service works fine to. I think that files might have been create by some spyware that was try to disable the antivirus service on my computer a while a back. I had the spyware cleaned up but this file was probably a left over. That is an exploit for a nasty windows bug, and i wasn\'t aware of it.

It\'s all good now.
