Message 3245 - Posted: 7 Sep 2004, 12:05:47 UTC

I have a problem with CP on my Windows 2000 machine.

It chugs away all day processing my work unit. I only have CP running on BOINC.

So far it has processed 115 hours into the work unit. This figure would of been higher, because at 12 noon every day, my PC runs a virus scan for about 30mins. Whilst the virus scan is processing, CP stops processing the work unit.

When the virus scan is complete, the processing of the work unit does not re-start in BOINC. I have to stop and re-start the BOINC program.

This obviously means that when I leave the machine unattended (over the weekend) I do not get any more processing completed past noon on Saturday.

Any idea why this happens and how to stop it?

Si.

can you check your user prefs web page, and see what the settings are for suspending on computer activity, the time to recover, suspends at certain times, etc?

These are my settings (set to run all the time)

Do work while computer is running on batteries?
(matters only for portable computers) no
Do work while computer is in use? yes
Do work only between the hours of (no restriction)
Leave applications in memory while preempted?
(suspended applications will consume swap space if 'yes') yes
Confirm before connecting to Internet?
(matters only if you use a modem) no
Disconnect when done?
(matters only if you use a modem) no
Keep enough work on disk to last between 2 and 7 days
On multiprocessors, use at most 2 processors
Write to disk at most every 60 seconds

I'm still having this problem. Just got back in the office after being away for 2 days - and the processing had stopped. BOINC was just sitting there doing nothing (not processing the CP work unit).

Can anyone help with this problem?

Si.

You could try setting Do work only between the hours of to 13:00 and 12:00 (and possibly shift your virus scan to 10 minutes later just to make sure).

Hi Si,

FWIW I’m running XP Pro SP2 and CPDN BOIN and CPDN Classic. I’m running Norton AV 2004. Every week for as long as I can remember my AV scans my entire HDD on Friday at 20:00, for ~30 minutes, with no impact, other than a degradation in performance for CPDN, whether BOINC or not. The performance impact is understandable, as the AV task is higher priority. However, this does not impact the processing of CPDN, which resumes normal service after the AV scan has finished. My BOINC settings mirror yours, with the exception of “Leave applications in memory while preempted?” which I have set as “no”. This is the only difference I can think of.

What AV software are you running? What version of BOINC are you running? What’s your Memory utilization when the AV software is running? It would be interesting to know what messages you get in the BOINC GUI Messages log when the AV tasks kicks in, for example, does your project status change (pre-empted, running, suspended). Presumably when you look at the BOINC GUI Work display your WU has a status of Preempted?

Si,

I've just spotted that your Win 2K machine only has 128MB of memory. BOINC and the OS are going to be using pretty close to that between them, so when your virus scan kicks in CPDN is almost certainly going to be swapped out to your virtual memory swap file. Sounds like something's going wrong when it swaps back in, but nothing too critical because the job starts fine on a BOINC restart. Pre-empting shouldn't come in to the equation as you're only running CPDN.

If you can't increase the memory to 256MB you might have to change Do work while computer is in use? to no instead of my earlier suggestion to get round your problem.

Hi

I just had the same thing as Si happen. Norton anti virus is set to run at 2:30am on a Friday morning as you can see the last entry from boinc was at 1:33am.

I checked the computer at 7:00am to find a message from norton antivirus that it did not find any virus.
When I came home at 5:30pm On checking boinc it was not running and there were no errors or any messages in its log file.
Had to shutdown and restart boinc to get it going.
I am also running Win2K but I have 512M of memory.
