I have a quad core & run Vista 64bit. On my old PC a WU crashed but it is still showing as active task ID 6963845. On my current PC a WU failed to download properly but is still showing as active Task ID 8144491. Another WU has crashed & 1 is running OK but each time I update to get new work it says \"Requesting 0 seconds of work\". Surely I should be able to get at least 1 more WU?! Is there any way to delete the other 2 WUs so I can get more tasks?
Thanks

Do you have SETI WUs in the tasks tab? It\'s possible that BOINC thinks that it has enough work to deal with at present.

Where are these \"active\" WUs that you want to delete? In the tasks tab, or on the server? If only the latter, then they can\'t be deleted.

Well the 2nd climate change unit crashed also. Yes I\'ve a lot of SETI units. Tried altering pfreference to 10 day & no joy. After 2nd u/s WU was updated I got 2 new task - hawever the 2 that I am unable to finish, no longer on my PC, seem to restrict me t 2 unit when I could be working on 4!
Thanks for your help

Ah, you\'re talking about the Maximum daily WU quota per CPU limit.
This will eventually increase again, unless you continue to crash models, in which case it could decrease instead.

Pilgrim, I think your daily WU quota for the Intel quad is 2 per day per core ie 8 per day. But this computer has hundreds of SETI tasks waiting to be crunched. It\'s a very fast computer but it still has limits and the BOINC scheduler will probably be imposing these.

It\'s much harder to complete CPDN models than SETI tasks (partly but not only because of their length). To be more certain of completing your next climate model

* go to the CPDN READMEs in my signature and choose a backup method, so if your model crashes you can restore the most recent backup and continue crunching the same model

* in the README about crashes and problems look at item #6 by MikeMars

* if you\'re O/Cing the quad, test its stability if you haven\'t already

Thanks for the feed back. I han\'t backed up as theses WU are only taking 10-12 days max, some just a week. I have completed other WUs & PC stable, it is o/ced. Have upped my volts to CPU & RAM just to make sure.
In preferences Climate is set to 200% & SETI 100% so I thought that would shift the bias toward climat prediction. When I\'ve reached my daily quota I have got a message which I didn\'t this time!
I have 4GB RAM which only 1/2 is shown as in use. Disk usage is set to 10 GB & climate change is using 660MB [SETI 80MB].
AS stated I have 2 WUs that are showing as active but one was lost during a crash on my old PC & the other failed to download on 22nd Oct but shows up as if I had got it & was able to run it. These 2 seem to be stopping me having more that 2 WU to work on i.e. 4 in total. Is that right quad core = 4 active tasks? Will I have to wait for 2012 when the last WU expires before I will get a 4th task?
I have set SETI to no new work & see what happens when I run the task down to about 20.
Answers greatly appreciated.

If I were you I would reset CPDN.

A reset won\'t get rid of the 2 dead tasks, however it might help with getting new work. But given that BOINC was only installed on 14th Oct I find it hard to believe it has developed a major problem so quickly as SETI is working fine.

I think we\'re getting confused about what CPDN tasks are on which computer. Maybe we should call them the Intel Quad and the AMD Dual so we know which one we\'re talking about and how many cores they have ie how many models they could run.

The Intel Quad has had these tasks. You shouldn\'t reset CPDN on this computer because a HADSM and a HADAM have sent lots of trickles in the last 24 hours and are making excellent progress. Q.1 Can you only see those two models in the Tasks tab of this computer or can you also see the HADCM that has never trickled? If you can\'t see it in the Tasks tab you should just forget about it; it probably didn\'t finish downloading properly. Quite a few of us have ghost CPDN models like this that never show up in our Boinc Manager. They shouldn\'t prevent you from getting new work.

Your AMD Dual has had these tasks. Q.2 Are there any CPDN models in its Boinc Manager Tasks tab? If there are no models, you could definitely reset CPDN on the AMD.

Third question. How many climate models would you prefer to run on each computer?

Hi Mo.v - right the AMD is no longer running BOINC the dual PC is defunct.
The Quad is running OK - touch wood - and the HADCM is the one that didn\'t download i.e. a ghost & is not visible in tabs. The other 2 are running & trickling. I wouldn\'t reset until they are finished & without getting new work BUT I don\'t think that is the solution at the moment.
I hope that I can get new work. When I started the quad it downloaded 3 units. I would be happy with 3 - 2 to run & 1 as standby so A. I don\'t have to wait to get a new task after 1 finishes & B. if Seti goes down I can run all 3. Surely for a quad I should be able to get 4 tasks?
Thanks for yr help

For a quad, you can get 4 tasks to run simultaneously; both of mine do this.

BUT
You need to have your prefs set to allow 4 processors, (BOINC 5 and earlier), or 100%, (BOINC 6). Anything less than this, and BOINC won\'t let all 4 be used.

And, as I said earlier, if BOINC thinks that it won\'t be able to finish a long climate model at the same time as it\'s running lots of SETI WUs, then it just won\'t ask for any more climate models.

You have to remember that BOINC works out it\'s capabilities for a project by checking how long it takes to complete several WUs from each of the projects. If you keep crashing climate models, then it will never know, and will take the deadline time given by the project as it\'s base figure.

Updte - still not sure what was going on but as of this morning I was able to download 2 more tasks. I will try to remeber to back them up every 3 or 4 days.
