I\'m having a problem updating from a windows vista lap top. Sometimes I\'m not around a net work for days at a time then when I try to connect it says it failed and is sending info to \"peer\" ... bottom line is nothing updates it looks like i just colected the WU\'s and dropped out. The only time it does connect on it\'s own is when I detatch and reatatch. Then the pages all up date.

As soon as I miss any auto update I seem to be screwed I have set my network connection in \"activity\" to \"suspended\" to avoid gettng a weeks worth of \"failed\" messages. Even then when I get a connection and try to update it does no good.

I\'d hate to finish all this work and have it not be taken, that would really kill this for me. Whats going on???? from here the server seems to not see me because i can\'t get hooked up every day, then when I can it is doing what?

I\'ll see any responces in a few days, I hope someone has something good to add, else what is the point?

Bob,

Direct connection to the Internet or through a Proxy? Was a change made about the time the problem began?
Any updates to security software? Sometimes, it\'s necessary to reestablish settings for allowed connections.

These are Generic questions. I have less than two weeks experience with a laptop and haven\'t had comm. issues (yet). (The slim box has Vista Home Premium and it set everything up smoothly, automagically.)

Edit: This doesn\'t fit your symptoms but most of the crashed Models have:
Exit status 1073807364 (0x40010004)

This is for -107... but might be worth a read:

To be honest I\'m not really sure, it seems to happen all the time ever since it missed one connection. I can plug a cable and go right out with all the other programs or run via the local library. Of the software doing anything that would block anything all I\'m using is AVG and it has never give mea single problem connecting any place any time.

All this seems to of started after the very first time BOINC missed one net connection. Thing is LCH,SETI and anything else updates just fine. All statistics for all accounts but Climateprediction are updating no problem. The only problem seems to be the Climateprediction account. So I\'m unable to say it is a connection problem it seems to be in the Climateprediction account and software. As I said all it ever did was miss just one connection, ever since then it acts as if it is unable to get back to the CP servers.

I know I could close the WU\'s detatch from CP and reload and it would all go fine, untill it looks for the connection and sees none. Stopping network activity and all that changes nothing, and yet all other BOINC accounts are working as they should.

I would hate to think that CP dropped my WU\'s and is thinking I\'m just downloading them to drop them. One small WU has less then 200 hours left. I\'ll hold on and see what happens with that. I can see form the time on the WU\'s that this may be a problem CP has, but for Gods sake the other accounts are updating howcome CP isn\'t? Is CP demanding to be able to check every WU and if they can\'t it dropes? No other BOINC accounts have this problem with my lap top. I has to be a CP problem.

The server NEVER \"drops\" a model. It will keep it there for years and years and years, patiently waiting for the person to continue with it. Although after about 6 weeks with no contact, it will consider the model \'lost\', and set a flag to allow that data set to be re-issued if needed.

But you can download a data set and then never contact the server for a year, just crunching offline. And then, far in the future, you can contact the server and upload the entire set of data from the model, and it will be accepted by the server.

The problem may be the operator.
The program was designed for a supercomputer, where the model can run without interruption from other programs, such as Skype, games, video editing, and all of the other programs run on desktops/laptops.
And the models have many files, each storing different data. These all need to be closed BEFORE shutting down the operating system, or the computer.
And closing the lid of a laptop is classed as \'closing down the computer\' by this program.

One thing to try, is to set the option in Projects to No new tasks, make a backup using my copy and paste method, and then run the model until it fails. At this point you should think about what was happening at the time.
And then restore the backup, and try again, making sure to NOT do whatever it was that may have caused the problem the previous time.

As for not being able to contact the servers, that\'s part of your side of things. And we don\'t have enough info to help much there, other than to advise you to have a look at the README files, to see if there\'s anything there that you need to know.

Please copy the message lines around the above. 10 lines above and below may do to start with.
Then paste then into a message here.

Also:
Do you use a router?
Did you change your ISP about the time this started happening?
Do you connect from home or work?

Hi Robert

For the \'Failed sending data to the peer\' message, in the CPDN README about crashes and problems there\'s this help item in the section about network problems:

http://bbc.cpdn.org/forum_thread.php?id=1377

and this in the BOINC FAQs

http://boincfaq.mundayweb.com/index.php?language=1&view=195&sessionID=3e48ac1bcbdc4c0c50a70e5043a0154b

You can get to all the CPDN READMEs including the collection about backups through my signature or Les\'s.

This must be a network connection problem. Nothing to do with the crunching of the model. Don\'t reset CPDN or detach from the project because of this problem. Every time you do this you abort your running model and then have to start a new model from the beginning. Even if it takes a few days to sort out the network/firewall problem, just let your current model continue crunching.
