I suspect the information will be buried in some log somewhere, but not sure which one... can anyone shed some light?

Regarding the show graphics problem, what sort of installation do you have, and what sort of system is it installed on?

The system is a Dell Dimension 3100 running Windows XP home ediotn Service Pack 2 using an Intel(R) 82915G/GV/910GL chipset It had run the BBC model show graphics function without a problem but has gracefully degraded to bringing the graphics up in another users profile and now to nothing.

The climate prediction models I run fail to finish most of the time.
I read the "generic solutions" explanation, and I tried to follow the "information about backups" link, but my computer could not find a page. Is there info about backups?
I do not see anything about backups in the BOINC menus.
Thanks.

Hi Bill,

The info on backups was written quite awhile ago, when models were longer, computers were slower, and quad cores didn't exist, or were very rare.

The above means that most everyone I know has given up on making backups of model runs. The problems that crash a model, or lots of them, likely won't be solved by rerunning from a backup.

One of the things that is suggested to decrease problems and decrease time to completion, is under your computing preferences, to choose the following options:
- uncheck, Suspend while computer is in use
- check, Leave non-gpu tasks in memory when suspended
- Put a larger number in for, Suspend when non-BOINC CPU usage is above %
- Put a large number in for, Use at most % of CPU time, like perhaps 100

This will decrease the amount of suspends and resumes your computer does during computing. If those preference values result in poor performance on your PCs for non-BOINC tasks, I would suggest changing Use at most % of the CPUs to some percentage other that 100, so if you have a quad core, put in 50 or 75 percent and that will free up computing resources and run your processors cooler.

One of the problems with crashing, is if the processor overheats. I see you are running laptops and they can overheat pretty easily. Cooling pads can help keep the laptop cool, or even just tilting up the back of the laptop a little so air can circulate under it. Also, while the laptop is not running, you could use compressed air to blow dust out of the vents. Dust can build up over time and decrease cooling.

Those are my suggestions for increasing your chances for completing models. Good luck and ask back if these suggestions don't work for you.
