Message 43362 - Posted: 3 Nov 2011, 17:59:13 UTC - in response to Message 43361.

Team Scotland appears to have acquired two new members in CPDN recently but I can't work out who they are to welcome them - does anyone know? Iansm probably does, if he's around! ;-)

I think one is Sabine from Germany - welcome, Sabine, and many thanks for crunching and for joining our team ;-)

Sabine has started trickling away ok. The other is Ice (joined Oct 13) but no tasks downloaded yet. Probably the inconsistency of WU availability in recent weeks but decent stocks of two model types now available - so no excuses!

A warm team Scotland welcome to Iain, who has been crunching in CPDN for some years and has just joined our team. Thanks for joining, Iain, and happy continued crunching - you'll find that Iain (or in some cases Ian) is one of the most popular names in our team! ;-)

Good to see you here, IanB, you're a rare visitor! ;-)

What with IanB crunching in CPDN again (good for you!), the new Iain joining (thanks again, Iain!) and Arnie Mearns returning to the team after a short absence(welcome back!), the Scotland team has now shot past 60,000,000 credits in CPDN alone - well done everybody!

Gosh, today we've squeaked into the CPDN top teams' front page in RAC, at no 20! http://climateapps2.oerc.ox.ac.uk/cpdnboinc/top_teams.php?sort_by=expavg_credit&offset=0

Still at no. 24 in total credits but, if this RAC continues, we should regain our long-standing 23rd place soon.

A belated Happy Boinc Birthday, everyone.
It's 6 years since the BBC experiment started, with Ian starting up the team there on 16th Feb 2006. (I sneaked in early on the 9th before they were officially open and got user ID 26)

I've not been doing any Climate stuff recently, concentrating on the new Virtual Machine models from Cern. They're running actual data from the collider and do their stuff in their own little box inside your machine in their own fancy scientific version of Linux. Not for the faint-hearted. Each WU runs for 24 hours but will connect to Cern several times during that and reboot the Virtual Machine each time it gets a new job. (Just for clarity; it only reboots the Virtual box within your box, not your real box) Thought that would make things clearer, but maybe it didn't 8/
From the results the Cern guys are ruling out more and more energy levels where the elusive Higgs ISN'T thus narrowing the areas that they want to look at more closely.

Won't be long now until I get to that first Mega Boinc milestone 8)

I am running Test4Theory@home, version 7.06, on my Linux box with VirtualBox 4.1.8. But we are not crunching experimental data, we are doing MonteCarlo simulations to be compared by the CERN people with real data.

Thanks for that correction, Tullio. Misunderstanding on my part. Our work will be pointing the guys in the right direction, though. Might be more interesting if they DON'T find it!

Good to hear from you here, Ray, it's been a while! Many thanks for your continuing contribution to team Scotland.

And a warm Scottish welcome (it is in fact unseasonably warm here at present, quite springlike!) to Gyorgy Papp, who has been crunching in CPDN for several years and has just joined our team. Many thanks for joining us, Gyorgy, happy continued crunching and we hope to "meet" you sometime in one of the forums (I'm never sure if that should be "fora"!)

Meant to post earlier that our team leader scottishwebcamslive.com and one of our longest-serving team members, crcam, have both recently passed the 5 million credit milestone in CPDN - well done both! ;-)

A very warm Scottish welcome to kilo from Hungary, who started crunching in CPDN last week and has just joined team Scotland. Many thanks for joining the project and our team, kilo, happy continued crunching, and we hope to meet you at one point in one of the forums.

Thanks partly to our new members and partly to team members' persistence in getting work from CPDN whenever it's available, team Scotland has not only regained its long-standing 23rd place in total credits on the CPDN top teams list but has also been in 15th place in RAC for the past couple of days! This is our highest RAC placing to date, well done everybody!

WOW, we're actually in 12th position in RAC today!!! http://climateapps2.oerc.ox.ac.uk/cpdnboinc/top_teams.php

and it looks as though we might overtake the Austrian national team shortly and get to 22nd position in overall credit ;-)

And I've completed another long model and (after a brief delay when there was no work available) started another.

Team Scotland now at 14th position in CPDN RAC (12th place was far too good to last!), BUT we've risen to 22nd place in total credit for CPDN http://climateapps2.oerc.ox.ac.uk/cpdnboinc/top_teams.php?sort_by=total_credit&offset=20 ;-) I'm sure Iansm will correct me if I'm wrong, but I think that's our highest place to date?

We can assume that if BOINCstats states that 23 was highest ever then 22 will be the new record. BOINCstats does not record highest ever for RAC so we can assume that 12 was also a record. So both numbers have reached highest positions during the last week.

Interestingly, we now have up to 10 fewer active crunchers (22) than in the early CPDN years. Higher productivity! Incidentally, I see that an original member has recently restarted after over 4 years absence. Was also a BBC cruncher. Maybe more will return ?

Oh dear, I don't seem to have been in here for a few weeks - too busy!

Don't have anything in particular to report so just thought I'd comment that team Scotland only rarely has a "User of the Day" http://uotd.org/show_team.py?team=404 in any BOINC project and our last UOTD in CPDN was yours truly in AUGUST 2010!!!. This is because, in order to be chosen as UOTD in any project, you need to create a profile in that project - you don't have to give away any personal information, or submit a picture of yourself, you can say as little (or as much!) as you like. You can go here http://climateapps2.oerc.ox.ac.uk/cpdnboinc/profile_menu.php to create a profile in CPDN

That recent UoTD got me to 45 although some were before I joined the team. Our glorious leader, Ian, may have more but I think he has a few split personalities so it's not so easy to get his total.
I've also recently become a Boinc millionaire at last. Woo hoo

Well done, Ray - I see what you mean about scottishwebcamslive.com split personalities, he seems to appear several times on the list! Strange because I'm sure he takes care to keep all his credits together.

And many congrats on becoming a BOINC millionaire, I missed that! ;-)
