I had a project going that was supposed to end in October 2007 - needed to do about 1600 more hours and it was at 58% complete. Now, it\'s gone - it can\'t have finished, but I can\'t figure out what happened. I poking around, I managed to detach and re-attach, but didn\'t get the same project. Now I\'m starting over with something else, with an end date of 2008. Did all of that CPU time just go up in smoke? Do I need to get reattached to the same project to finish it?

It disappeared because it failed.

The only error message that may be relevant are several of these:
No heartbeat from core client for 31 sec - exiting

This usually means that the manager lost contact with the model for an extended period of time, and decided that it was because the model had failed; so it began the end processing of the model, which is basically telling the server that the model had crashed.
The loss of contact would most likely be because some other program was using all of the computer resources for an extended period, thus starving the model of resources needed to run. There are lots of possibilities: games, video editing/streaming, etc. It\'s recommended that both the manager and the model be Suspended before running such programs. (Suspend in the Menu.)

Detaching from the project will ALWAYS cause the loss of all current work. If you hover your mouse pointer over the Detach button, you\'ll see a message that says this. This is the \'last ditch\' way to remove a model that\'s gotten seriously out of hand.

The only way to get back a failed model is by using a backup made BEFORE the problem.
See my sig below for ways to do this.

As the models upload data all the way through the crunching, the only data lost will be from the time of the last trickle on about 4th December, (model time), up to the time of the failure.

Then it\'s gone for good. I didn\'t know to look for the trickle, and thought all was well. Unfortunate to lose those months of work - we were leaving the computer on all the time, with very little else running, so it could work on the project.. Before I detatched, I clicked on update - and got a message about having a wrong url and a suggestion to detach and re-attach. Maybe that was why contact was not made for so long. And, no backup. :<( Won\'t make that mistake again

It\'s not as bad as it appears - the model uploads it\'s climate to the servers as it goes, so the \'work done so far\' has not been lost, and will be used by the scientists.

I don\'t know how to look for the trickle either. With the BBC version of climate prediction Boinc had a button that lead directly to displaying the list of uploads which had occurred. How can one see the detailed statistics of these intermediate uploads of partial results?

The trickles are listed here via the individual \'result\' page. Click on your account, results, and then select the correct model. The trickles will be listed at the bottom of the page.

It was a lot easier to locate them on the BBC site, but IIRC it puts extra load on the database server to display them that way.

Thank you for the quick response. Does your second paragraph mean that they are NOT displayed as on the BBC site, or that you have to work at it to get them? I thought trickles referred to the periodic uploads of interim results of the modelling.

I tried what you suggested without success. I clicked on Your Account in the BOINC client, which, in my browser, showed a list of my projects at the bottom with summarised results for them; then if I click on Results in the left column of the page, it displays the consolidated results from December 2004; if I click on the climateprediction entry in the table I just get essentially the same page again.

OK, try this:
Just to the left of all the messages here is your name.
Click on this.
Near the bottom, it will say Computers on the left, with View to the right. Click on View.
On the right of the next page is Results. Under this is the number of models you\'ve been given. Click on this number.
This will give you a page labelled: Results for computer
On the left, under Result ID, is a list of your models. You only have 1 listed, so click on this number.
Go right down to the bottom of the page, and there are the trickles for that model.

There are LOTS of ways of getting here; for instance by starting in the blue menu to the left of here and clicking on Your account, or by starting in the manager on your computer, and clicking on Your account in the Projects tab.

scroll down to computer VIEW,click on view.
Click on the number underneath results, in your case 1
Lastly click \'Result ID\' that brings you here.
Trckles are at the bottom of the page.

Thank you very much, the key step I was missing was clicking on the number under Results. I suppose with just a single digit 1 it was not obvious it was a link.
