OK, my first \"CPU Upgrade at 50%\" didn\'t work out. Due to a motherboard voltage issue, I couldn\'t get the CPU chips to work together. So, I scrapped the whole thing and bought a dual Opteron 248 HE system. I have the understanding (and experience) that upgrading a system from same architecture to new speed is generally safe and causes no ill effects (unless speeds differences are drastic). However, this time I\'m changing the whole CPU architecture (32-bit K7 to 32/64-bit K8). I\'m assuming here that I won\'t have to recompile my Linux kernel. :)

My question is how to I protect my running model (and BOINC) for it to finish processing my work unit (9% done)? Of course, I\'ll do a full system backup before I touch the motherboard.

Exit from BOINC.
Copy the ENTIRE boinc folder to a dvd, preferably after zipping. (This will preserve the R/W attributes.)
After the upgrade, copy it all back to the new system.

This advice has been posted MANY times. (Search for a title such as: \"Upgrading my computer\".)
